an attack that left a d.c. husband and father clinging to life. 29-year-old thomas, who goes by tc, was hanging out with friends at the restaurant along pennsylvania avenue friday night after attending the washington nats game. they say he left to walk a few blocks home to his capitol hill home around 12:45 a.m., but this morning his wife, abby, awoke to found he never returned. she contacted police and around the same time, officers were responding to a call for a man lying unconscious on the front porch of a home. turns out that man was t.c. and he had been brutally assaulted. hit in the head with an unknown object. his wife is at his bedside at washington hospital center. he has undergone surgery. doctors removed part of his skull. he has been in a coma since he arrived and remains in extremely critical condition. he works as a senior analyst. he'll celebrate his 30th birthday in a few weeks. he and abby, who is a d.c. schoolteacher have a 21 month old son. we spoke with a friend of the family about how they

and d.c. police chief cathy lanier are calling this security guard a hero for what he did here yesterday morning. he was shot in the arm. he's still recovering. as for the shooter, we now know that his name is floyd lee corkins. he's 28 years old from herndon, virginia. and this morning he is in f.b.i. custody charged with assault with a deadly weapon and more charges could be coming. this all started just before 11:00 yesterday morning. corkins allegedly walked into the main entrance of the family research council where he was confronted by the security guard leo johnson. law enforcement officials say corkins then made some kind of negative reference about what the council does. it's a very conservative christian lobbying group, very against same-sex marriage. without warning he allegedly shot the security guard. the guard then tackled corkins to the ground with the help of a few other people that were standing by in the lobby. they were able to hold him there on the ground until the f.b.i. c

d.c. center for the community. in northwest d.c.. police say corkins entered the lobby of the family research council on g street around 10:45 wednesday morning. got into an argument with the security guard and shot him in the arm. though wounded the guard leo johnson helped others tackle the shooter. he was eventually taken into custody without a fight. law enforcement officials say corkins made negative comments about the center before the shooting started. he had been volunteering at d.c.'s lbgt center for the last six months working the front desk of weekends. he was described as a kind and gentle and unassuming young manage. police also -- man. police also canvassed the neighborhood and interviewed the parents and grandparents. sources say corkins bought the gun just last week that he used in the shooting. if fbi now working to figure out what he intended to do and why it could have been much worse. >> i would say the security guard in this case is a hero as far as i'm concerned. he d
