if you've ever been to main street in ellicott city, we've had floods. we've had fires but nothing, nothing like this. they were sitting after the bars had emptied out and went to the bridge, hanging out on the bridge. their bodies were found seated on the edge of the bridge and they're facing baltimore, facing east as they were on the side where the train came right behind them. that's when the train derailed and smothered them in coal. it drifted down below and on top of cars. about 21 cars were ruined. some of the trains went overboard. it's just an amazing scene. this train was heading from grafton, west virginia and it was on its way to baltimore to empty out the coal there. it's been here since our grandfather's days and this bridge is one of the first from ellicott city to baltimore. so a lot of -- >> reporter: we're trying to hear what they heard last night. we're live in ellicott city. the train was going through the middle of ellicott city. it was an 80-car train. 21 turned over. 19-year-old rose mayr and 19-year-old elizabeth nass, both from ellicott city were sitting on the track, sitting on the side facing the river. as the train was going by according to the ntsb lead investigator, something triggered the brake. they're trying to figure that out. as the train was going across that bridge one of the cars derailed, dumped tons of coal off the track. the girls, according to the investigators, were covered in that coal. then as jamie mentioned, too, it completely within the down the embankment. a lot of the cars were crushed by tons and tons of coal. they have been taking the trane cars full of coal. here comes one of the bulldozers. they're piling up that coal so they can remove it later, but it's a very, very slow process as they have to upright 21 cars. some of those cars flipped over on the bridge. there's the problem of trying to right the cars and get them out of the way, too the csx crews have been out here since

reporting live in ellicott city, megan mcgrath, news 4. back to you in the studio. >> can you tell about this point if the search for more potential victims has began already? >> reporter: well, i can tell you that from my vantage point we can see the crews are concentrating on the train itself. we're told that there were two people that were on the tracks. now, it was very dark. it was after midnight when this accident occurred. apparently some of the coal from these derailed cars did fall into a parking lot area where there were carses parked. now, in terms of whether anyone was in those vehicles, whether anyone was injured, w don't have any information on that yet. i think that they are still waiting for the sun to come up a little bit and certainly we're going to have to move some of that coal aside to take a better look at the cars. those vehicles. but right now no reports of any injuries from that parking lot. the only injuries and actually fatalities that we know of are from the rail bridge itself. >> all right. megan mcgrath, live
