jason brooks is here now, tell us all about it. >> it is hard to top willie and the godfather trilogy put the job market is looking a little bit better this morning. the labor department is reporting a net gain of 163,000 jobs in july, far better than expected. also doubling the monthly gains we saw over the previous few months. earlier this year we had solid gains of around a quarter million over the winter so the average gains this year about 150,000 per month. still not enough to chew into the higher ranks of the unemployed. unemployment actually increased little bit higher. despite the travails of social media companies like facebook, seeing stocks hit record lows, there are some firms that are doing very well. yelp proved that with strong earnings, its shares jumped 17% higher. linked in is doing well and it san francisco reservation specialist open table is also pleasing wall street. also on word that spain may actually ask for some bailout money. the dow is up 187 points back over 13,000. nasdaq is up 40 and s and p is up. link in is up almost 14 percent now. open table is gain

jason brooks, what you think? >> a mixed bag of economic information's out there this morning. none of the terrible but none of it great. we have only seen slight growth over the summer and that is reflected in the weekly unemployment claims. the labor department says first-time claims were unchanged although the prior week was revised higher. the four week average at just over 370,000 is just nudging into territory suggesting some growth. consumer confidence hit a nine month low of this past month but spending is up a half percent last month and in time is up 0.3%. we're getting indications of august has gone pretty well. the gap reports that among its three chains combined sales were up 9% which nearly doubled. gap shares are moving a bit higher this morning. the market is moving lower. it is all about ben bernanke tomorrow and rising doubts as to whether it will be coming around the corner. shares of the gap are up 3% off the same store sales report. >> we had a gorgeous day yesterday but what about today. >> it looks like changes are in the works. beginning to see some low

jason brooks is here to talk about it >> when google bought motorola mobility for $12.5 billion most people thought they were doing so for the intellectual property and for the handset division. according to an industry publication, google is now going to shop the cable-tv part of that business that includes set- top-box is, modems and other devices. it could fetch them about $2 billion. another report out from an analyst at research in motion that makes blackberries might start licensing the next block. operating system in order to revive its business and says that samsung would be the most likely business to partner up. getting a reading on u.s. worker productivity for the labor department, it rose 1.6% in the second quarter, a much stronger quarter than the first. still pretty weak overall. during a healthy economy we look for gains of over 2 percent. a lot of concerns, will release some economic reports and it their economy has been weakening of bit. china is being looked at to balance the problems in europe. the dow is giving up 26 points, nasdaq is down by 10. another rough day

jason brooks is here from money watch and it is all about ample >> the news keeps getting better for shareholders. yesterday's stock closed at an all-time high end in the process absolutely obliterated the prior record for a public company that was held by microsoft. apple closed at $623 billion in change, about $7 billion more than it was worth in 1999. usually apple stock does get a huge bump before a big product rollout. we expect to see the iphone 5 sometime next month. facebook, a different story. one of its key earlier investors revealed yesterday that he sold 20.5 million shares of its private stock in the first expiration of the lockup from the ipo and that netted him $400 million after his $500,000 investment several years ago. some are worried about the timing of this with facebook stop falling. this is something he worked out prior to the ipo and facebook had expected that most of the shares will be bought by other investors on the retail level. the stock market is off to a positive start. apple shares are heading higher up another 1%. the market cap is now worth $632 bill

. >> ashley is in for jason brooks this morning. >> asian markets got a small boost after china signaled future stimulus action this morning. the nikkei rose nearly 2% while the hang seng shed a fraction. mixed news on the job front this morning. the four week average fell to the lowest level we have seen since march. that has stopped moving a little bit higher when the bell first it. nasdaq is still in positive territory up almost 5 points. wall street is bracing for more layoffs. wall street will cut 10-15% of its job force on top of cuts from last year. facebook top executives and stockholders are now eligible to sell their stock as a lot that period ends. 2 billion shares could hit the market and send the stock price even lower. stock is already down more than 40% from the ipo in may. it should be an interesting day and we will see what happens. >> this was not the plan. >> everyone seems to be making a tablet and i guess samsung is joining the party. >> the south korean company releases the galaxy 10.1 today. it is equipped with a digital pen and allows viewers to u2 applications at

here now is jason brooks to give us some more on that. we did see the economy picked up just a little bit more than expected. this is still far too feeble to do much about the high rates of unemployment which is currently at 8.3%. we need to see the economy grow much more than where it is now to do anything about that. one company in focus is it yelp. the company's post ipo lockup expiration occurred today meaning insiders can start selling their shares. we have seen massive selloffs in other companies including facebook but that is not happening so far with the help. its stock is heading higher, up over 7 percent at 19. yelp has given wall street a better business model to work with and its revenue is up in the recent quarter. economy numbers are not really driving wall street today, it is all about what ben bernanke says on friday. wall street is looking for further hints. nasdaq is gaining 4 and s&p is up by one point. >> the sea what is ahead on cbs this morning >> we are obviously in tampa of but we have reporters on the ground in ne

here to talk about that is jason brooks. >> new ceos tend to go in different directions. in the case of yahoo! we don't quite know what direction that will be but yahoo! indicates that she is thinking of not going ahead with a plan to reward shareholders with the proceeds they will get from the chinese electronic commerce giant. the former interim ceo had said that much of the money would go back to shareholders and that really interested investors given that yahoo! stock has struggled over the past few years but meyer might be thinking that the money can be used elsewhere. investors right now don't know what that is so stocks are falling on that uncertainty. right now, yahoo! is down about 5% this morning. manchester united, one of the most popular sports clubs in the world is going public with prices at $14. sports clubs do not tend to make good investments. clubs like the boston red sox and cleveland indians went public and didn't do very well and wound up going private again. the stock market is falling further into the red today. were concerned over china reporting w

here to talk with us about it is jason brooks >> not a lot to get wall street excited this morning. a slight rise in weekly unemployment claims. the four week average is up around 68,000. those numbers are still barely in the area suggesting mild job growth. we're getting word that ram bus will lay off 15% of its work force which could mean about 60-70 jobs. hewlett-packard already told us that its fiscal third quarter would be brutal one due to the $8 billion write-down of a firm that it purchased four years ago. it lost $8.9 billion. more concerned that revenue missed expectations by about half a billion dollars. hewlett-packard shares are down quite a bit. meg whitman said the turnaround is making progress but we are talking about an aircraft carrier turning in to see. james bolger told cnbc this morning that he is not concerned about the economy and held jobs claims head above 400,000, taking the shine off of yesterday's fed. the market is opening lower this morning. the dow is off by 68 points. lots of pressure from hewlett- packard, shares are down by 6%. >> move over disneyla

. >> let's talk with jason brooks from money watch >> we will start off with a big winner, williams sonoma turned in a very solid quarter sales up quite a bit including from pottery barn and west allen chains. it also says it will be the first retailer to carry starbucks new coffee system a model that will not be available anywhere else. from losers, that would be dull, the computer maker is still struggling has more makers turned to tablets. after the market close today will get earnings from hewlett- packard who already warned it will be a tough quarter because of an $8 billion charge. wall street is waiting on the minutes of the latest fed meeting. there has been speculation that ben bernanke and crew would go with a third round but the better than expected july jobs report and other positive economic signals seem to have pulled back a little bit. at the moment, doubt is dropping by six points. nasdaq is down by two. dell is down by 6 percent off of its earnings report. >> time now for a look at what is coming up later on cbs this morning. >> the controversy surrounding senate candidate
