. >>> now 9 sports with kristen berset, the best sports in town. >> the washington nationals enjoyed a much deserved day off today before opening a big homestand against the rivals new york and atlanta. during the recent road trip, the nationals continued their hot streak solidifying the spot at the top of the league. what's been impressive, this team has been getting it done on both sides of the ball. the pitching staff is first while holding their opponents to the lowest average in the league. and then as a team at the plate, they're batting .258 with 127 homeruns. they're 6th in rbis. bryce harper knows there's more to be done, but likes this young team for the future. >> there's a lot of things that i want to accomplish and things like that. but the biggest thing is we're in first place, and i think that helps out a lot. so having a team that i'm on that's in first place that has a lot of guys to play the game, play it hard, play it right, and i think it's just a lot of function. >> now, orioles looking -- lot of fun. >> now, orioles looking for -- now, there is bryce harper. bry

kristin -- 80s on w >>> now 9 sports with kristen berset, the best sports in town. >> for four straight nights, the national's game has been delayed because of rain. in all, four hours and 42 minutes of delays. for the first three, it proved to be good luck for the curly ws, but that was a streak that would end tonight. chipper jones had the bat he used to hit the first ever homerun at national's park. it could be his last game in dh dc. thankfully for the nats, he didn't do that. they got things going with a 2-run double. the braves were able to salvage game three, avoid the sweep 5-1 the final. a day after steven strasburg pitched -- he missed two to three starts. he joked with the media asking for ideas in how to keep his ace pitching through october. apparently he's been getting a lot of suggestions lately. >> the best one i got was trip him when he's in the outfield so he strains a hamstring or something. he's got to be down for a month. that was a good one. i liked that one. >> all right. orioles wrapping things up in texas tonight. the match with the rangers. the player of the ga

-- kristen berset. >> reporter: it was not too bad of a start. did he as much as the redskins could have hoped for. we knew his debut would be short-lived tonight, and it was. just 14 plays. and then rgiii was pulled on a high note. but like i said, not too bad at all. things started out a little rough. two hand-offs. kevin roy story didn't go anywhere. a completion was ruled out of bounds. the next series that could have spelled disaster on 3rd and one, griffin turned the ball over on a botched hand i don't have. even though the ball was down, rgiii ran down george wilson using his body to throw him out of bounds. mike shanahan said he was actually kind of pleased with the way that rgiii performed in that regard. the third time was the charm. an eight-play 80-yard drive capped off by a screen pass to pierre garcon with a pre-season flip much to the dismay of his coaches, i'm sure. that would be it for the rack key. all in all it was a pretty good night. >> it was fun. got to get out there, get in some action, go against different people than our

. >>> now 9 sports with kristen berset, the best sports in town. >> the nationals remained quiet for the best -- for the team with the best record in baseball, there wasn't really too much that needed changing. the phillies, on the other hand, traded. so the nats facing a different team as they open a homestand against their rivals. not a good night for steven strasburg. he gave up a season high six runs. two innings later it got worse. jimmy rollins gets a shot to right. bryce harper can't get it as it bounces off the wall. rollins with an inside the park homerun. that was the last inning for strasburg. now, despite the trade rumors, the phillies did keep cliff lee. he responded with seven scoreless innings as the phillies shut out the nats. afterwards, they responded to the ace's trouble. >> so he's fighting himself. just the young pitcher. it's part of growing up. >> part of growing up. orioles taking on the yankees in the bronx. birds got in a 500 run hole in the beginning but more of them made up for it in the second. chris davis with his first career grand slam to cap off a sev
