kristin fisher is live in ellicott city this morning. she's looking for answers as are investigators. good morning, kristin. >> reporter: that's right. good morning, mike. there's really two things going on here this morning. this massive cleanup effort and this ongoing ntsb investigation into exactly what happened here in this train derailment. this cleanup effort has been going through the night just this barricade on main street is where all of these 21 rail cars overturned. the coal spilling out just everywhere. it's huge mess. the cleanup is expected to take several days. main street here is expected to be closed at least through today, probably tomorrow. this ongoing investigation is also expected to take several days, maybe even weeks. what we know as of now is that 21 of 80 rail cars derailed right around midnight yesterday crushing cars. it damaged parts of downtown spilling coal everywhere. and of course it killed these two teenage girls who were sitting on a bridge right near the tracks. the big question has been did their pre

kristin fisher joins us live from the scene where firefighters are still investigating the cause. good morning, kristin. >> reporter: good morning, mike. well, you know, the fire has been out for a few hours now, but it is still a real mess out here at the huntly square condominums. fire restoration crews have been working through the night. he just went inside an apartment. but you can see a pretty good presence out here, people trying to clean up these apartments. right now they're actually cleaning up inside people's apartments but one of those people that lived in those apartments just showed up. he had no idea what had happened. he showed up half an hour ago to the smell of smoke and several people cleaning up inside his burned out apartment. >> it's not that bad. i don't see any fire damage. just a lot of walls broken down because of the firefighters. it started at the bottom and just worked its way up i guess. >> reporter: worked its way up. good guess because that's exactly what happened. the fire broke out in the bottom unit around 10:00 p.m. four people were trapped insi

kristin fisher has been following that story since it happened. she join us now live from the scene with more information. >> reporter: we just got an update from ntsb investigators. they say progress here has been slow, but productive. they have removed 18 of the 21 rail cars that derailed when this train jumped the tracks around midnight yesterday. but main street here is still closed, and it will likely stay that way for the next two days while the investigation continues. we still aren't any closer to learning why this derailment happened. all they will say is a ruptured line triggered an automatic break. but why did that happen? and did the presence of the two teenage girls have anything to do with it? they plan to formally interview the three man crew that was onboard this train. they're also asking the public and the press to be patient. they're saying especially this one will take time. calling the last 24 hours, a well orchestrated, but very dangerous industrial ballet. he says this train derailed in one of the most challenging locations

amber stanley was shot to death in her own bed late wednesday night. 9news now reporter kristin fisher is at prince george's county police headquarters in palmer park with more on this story. have they learned any more kristin? >> reporter: unfortunately not too much andreament you know we're now 36 hours into this homicide investigation. but police here say they still have no suspects, no motives, no explanation for why this 17- year-old honor student was shot and killed in her own bedroom. so police here are now offering a $25,000 cash reward for anyone with information. homicide detectives say yesterday evening handing out reward flyers in that kettering neighborhood where that -- where the homicide happened. they're asking everyone, anyone who might have seen something for their help for their information. they say around 10:30 wednesday night someone kicked down the front door to amber stanley's home. asked for her by name. then entered her bedroom and she was in her bed and shot her several times. she was pronounced dead at the scene. now police say they have no description of a

kristin fisher joins us from the scene with more information. kristin? >> reporter: jc, the two bodies were found inside an apartment building just up the street. right now arlington county police are classifying these as suspicious deaths, not homicides but that could change. this investigation is still in its very preliminary stages. joining me now is arlington county police public information officer dustin sturback. i know you've only been on the scene approximately two hours but what do we know? >> the initial 911 call was received by a maintenance worker who discovered the bodies and reported it to the dispatch center. the arlington county police department is in the beginning stages of the investigation of to suspicious deaths in the 1900 block of north culpeper street in arlington county. >> reporter: i know you can't identify the victims but what do we know about the victims at this point? >> two adult black males. that's all we can release. >> reporter: roughly age range or can we not say at that point? >> i don't want to give a rough age range

kristin fisher is live at the complex. she has more on where they are this morning. good morning, kristin. >> reporter: good morning. first and foremost the good news is all five of those firefighters that were taken to the hospital are expected to make full recovery. they're expected to be just fine. four were taken for very minor burns. another was taken for heat exhaustion but good news there, they're going to be all right. the four people trapped inside this apartment complex are also expected to be just final. great news there. you can see clearly the fire has been out for several hours now. no more firefighters on the scene. right now we have a team of fire restoration specialists. you can see one of them walking out of this apartment complex now. but this is where the fire really started. if you look just down those stairs beyond that light, that is the apartment where this fire started. and it started right around 10:00 last night. inside four people were trapped. it's unclear exactly where those people were. some were in the bottom apartment, the terrace apa

kristin fisher joins us now from mitchellville where services for the officer are going to be held later this morning. kristin, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. just behind me right here is the woodstream church. this is where the funeral is expected to take place at 10:00 this morning. this funeral is expected to cause some major traffic delays in the area because hundreds, maybe thousands of police officers from all over the country are expected to come here to pay their respects to officer morris. the 23-year-old was born in jamaica but he grew up in laurel. he attended eleanor roosevelt high school. and then he joined the prince george's county police department in 2009. he had only been on the force for two and a half years when last week he was killedin a high speed chase on i-95. he was chasing two men accused of stealing a car when his car flipped. he was ejected and killed almost instantly. >> when you lose a police officer, especially in this kind of senseless death, you feel it in your heart. >> it's a thin, blue line. this is part of what binds us together. in our vic

kristin fisher is there with a live update. chris continue, what more do we know about this kill -- kristin, what more do we know about this killing? >> reporter: this is the home where this 17-yard girl's body was found right around 11:00 last night. right now prince george's county police say they have no suspects, no motive. all they will say is they are investigating this as a possible home invasion. this is still a pretty active police scene here but i tell you what, just moments ago a truly heartbreaking scene to see. this 17-yard girl's body was -- 17-year-old girl's body was brought out, put in the coroner's van and standing watching the whole thing, the girl's mother. just incredibly difficult to watch. you can only imagine what she's going through right now. neighbors tell me the 17-year- old girl was hoping -- she aspired to go to harvard university. she was clearly a bright young girl and just a tragedy here this morning as prince george's county police try to figure out what happened. the call came in around 10:20

we heard kristin fisher talk about this, the guy who fell asleep in the tower that's unrelated to this, but there's problems all over the country. how well is the system itself working? >> the system works well. we have the safest air system ever. when you look back at the last few years, we have had no major accidents. the real question is whether the congress is going to have the commitment and the ability to fund the next generation of air traffic control systems which needs to be funded continuously starting now. >> very quick answer, anything need to change because of this? >> they're going to look at the procedures and near going to see how did this -- they're going to see how did this screw- up occur and say all right, whose responsibility was it? and they're going to retrain that person. they're not going to fire them i don't think. they'll retrain that person, look at the procedures and they'll get it right. >> i hope you're right about that last. thank you for coming in. appreciate it. >>> we've got breaking news from arlington county where police say they have a break in the

kristin fisher joins us live this morning on where the investigation begins. >> reporter: prince george's county police say they have no suspects and no motive. for now they're investigating this as a possible home invasion which turned into a homicide. again that could all change. this is still very in the early stages of this investigation. but this all started right around 10:20 last night. that's when the call came into prince george's county police. when they arrived here at this home in upper marlboro, what they found just an awful tragedy inside. this 17-year-old girl shot and killed. she was pronounced dead on the scene. there were other people inside the home at the time of the shooting, but we don't know what happened to these people, if any of them were injured. all we know is they were interviewed by police but absolutely no idea how the other people in the home relates to this homicide, possible home invasion. one more thing. there's been a lot of questions about whether or not this home is the home of the girl. is this where she lived or is this the home of one of her friend

kristin fisher is live at the scene with more. goodorning, kristin. >> reporter: good morning. it's been just over 24 hours since this deadly train derailment. you can see that main street in ellicott city is still closed. it's going to stay that way for several days because this cleanup is expected to take such a long time. cleanup crews worked through the night to clean up the overturned rail cars. they're also trying to clean out all the coal that spilled out that was inside of those rail cars. that cleanup is expected to take severadays as is this ongoing ntsb investigation. what we know as of this morning is that 21 out of 80 rail cars overturned right around midnight yesterday. this derailment crushed cars, damaged parts of downtown, spilled coal everywhere and killed two teenage girls sitting on a bridge right near the tracks. the big question has been did their presence near the tracks le the conductor to possibly slam on on the brakes causing the train to derail. as of right now n.t.s.b. investigators will only say it was a ruptured airline that caused an automatic bra

live in arlington, i'm kristin fisher, back to you. >> kristen, thank you. >>> the accused gunman in the mass shooting in tucson, arizona, was back in court today. jared lautner. karen brown with the latest from the courthouse in tucson. >> reporter: a judge ruled that jared lautner is mentally competent to stand trial. he pled guilty. tv cameras were not allowed. lautner appeared very different. pale, thin, gaunt. he sat still as a psychiatrist testified about his troubled teenage and college years when he allegedly heard voices in his head. the psychiatrist said lautner told a doctor he was remorseful for what he did. lautner told his doctor, quote, i especially cry about the child. apparently referring to nine- year-old victim, christina green, who was killed in the attack. jared lautner's attorneys hope the plea agreement will get the 23-year-old college dropout life in prison instead of the death penalty. survivors of the shooting came to court, but former congressman woman, gabby giffords, was not one of them. mark kelly said he and his wife are satisfied with the plea agreemen
