good morning, kristin. >> reporter: good morning. the big question this morning is still motive. why would a 28-year-old walk into the lobby of the family research council and just open fire, shooting the security guard? both the f.b.i. and d.c. police say that is all still part of this ongoing investigation. it's an investigation that started here yesterday morning when this all happened around 10:45 and continued very late until the night up in herndon which is where this alleged gunman is believed to have lived. f.b.i. agents took several hours yesterday searching for clues at the suspect's home. his name floyd lee corkins. from what we've been able to dig up, he doesn't seem to have too much of a criminal history but he did volunteer at the d.c. center for the lgbt community for the last six months. that's very important because the family research council is well known for being very conservative, very against same- sex marriage. neighbors describe the family as being nice, good neighbors, low key, but they didn't seem to know too much about the suspected gunman himself. >>

what are police saying now, kristin? we haven't heard much in the way of details so far. >> reporter: not too much more from prince george's county police, but i am getting a lot more information from neighbors as they start to wake up and realize what's happened in their neighborhood this morning. what we're hearing is that prince george's county police are investigating this as a possible home invasion. but neighbors say they never heard any gunshots. one neighbor reported hearing some banging on the door and another neighbor says that the 17-year-old girl that was killed, her older sister and that sister's 4-year-old son escaped from an open window inside this home. so more and more it's sounding like a person or persons came to this home, somehow got inside and that's where they shot and killed this 17-year- old girl. but that is just a theory that's coming from neighbors. it is not confirmed by prince george's county police. here's what the prince george's county police spokesman had to say about what happened here

kristin fisher is live at the scene with more. goodorning, kristin. >> reporter: good morning. it's been just over 24 hours since this deadly train derailment. you can see that main street in ellicott city is still closed. it's going to stay that way for several days because this cleanup is expected to take such a long time. cleanup crews worked through the night to clean up the overturned rail cars. they're also trying to clean out all the coal that spilled out that was inside of those rail cars. that cleanup is expected to take severadays as is this ongoing ntsb investigation. what we know as of this morning is that 21 out of 80 rail cars overturned right around midnight yesterday. this derailment crushed cars, damaged parts of downtown, spilled coal everywhere and killed two teenage girls sitting on a bridge right near the tracks. the big question has been did their presence near the tracks le the conductor to possibly slam on on the brakes causing the train to derail. as of right now n.t.s.b. investigators will only say it was a ruptured airline that caused an automatic bra
