because paul ryan is so risky. paul ryan is very controversial. he became the face of his own budget plan, which essentially calls for turning medicare into a voucher system. don't forget, the democrats, a while ago, ran an ad which actually had paul ryan or someone who looked like him, pushing an old lady off a wheelchair, because he was about to take away her medicare. so he's a lightning rod for democrats. on the other hand, and this is what some republicans are applauding, it's a bold move by mitt romney. they didn't think he had it in him. it's a bold move. this is somebody who will focus the debate on entitlement reform, on the economy, what we're going to do about the debt. so, in a way, mitt romney is really doubling down on his economic argument, and i was talking to a former romney adviser about this. and he said to me, he said, you know what, paul ryan is exactly like somebody mitt romney would have hired at bain capital. he's young, he's smart, he gets the subject and he's kind of a fellow wonk. which is what romney is. he likes to loo

paul ryan around for weeks. somebody paul ryan referred to as, you have been following him enough they think sometimes you're a member of his family. set the scene right there on the ground are. more people showing up? are you seen much movement? what can you tell us, alex? >> reporter: well, there was a group of spectators and neighbors that turned out when they heard the news, but we have not seen movement in the paul ryan household for a few hours now. paul ryan attended a memorial service this morning for the victims of the oak creek shooting that happened last week in his district and then he came home and has been inside ever since. paul ryan has spent the whole week here in wisconsin. he did a couple closed fund-raisers for gop candidates. he was filming some tv ads for his congressional re-election campaign that he has been going forward with until, i guess now that he'll be on the ticket with mitt romney. but paul ryan is a big family man as you have been discussing. he enjoys being here in jamesville s

what does paul ryan want to do? what did he propose in his budget, which is to change medicare as we know it. that's an objective fact. because he would change it from how it now operates as a pay for service, into a premium support is what he calls it. other people call it a voucher. you give seniors a certain amount of money and then they have to, you know, get exposed to the private market. that's a fact about what he believes in addition to the fact that on the general budget he certainly wants to cut federal spending way back. that would hurt the social safety net. all of those are facts, right? >> david, if we do nothing and if we go down this road that the president wants to go down and these democrats, medicare will be changed forever as we know it. it will be bankrupt by 2024. medicare is going broke. every person in america watching this now knows that that's true. this president stole, he didn't -- he didn't cut medicare. he stole $700 billion from medicare to fund obama care. if any person in this entire
