i'm megyn kelly. sources on the ground in benghazi tell fox news as our compound came under attack by terrorists, cia operatives at an annex asked for permission to go to the consulate to try to help our u.s. ambassador chris stevens. repeatedly they were told to stand down, at least three times. former navy seal tyrone woods and two others went anyway. they were later joined back at the annex by glenn doherty who flew in as a rapid response team. when they got to the consulate. tyrone woods and the others, disobeying the orders to stand down, they walked into this. as they came under fire, and as fire throughout the consulate because they set the consulate on fire, a request for military backup was called in. it was denied. when it was all over, former navy seals woods, dougher, intelligence officer sean smith and ambassador chris stevens were all dead. the body of tyrone woods was found slumped over his machine gun at the annex. he requested help again and none was forthcoming. i spoke to his father

i'm megyn kelly. just take a look at the numbers. on september 30th the "real clear politics" average of all polls had the president 74 electoral votes ahead of governor romney. when you looked at how it's likely to turn out in terms of which way states were leaning they used the polls to calculate at that point that the president had 265 votes, just about locked up, compared to just 191 for governor romney. you need 270 to win. fast forward to today, and we see the predicted 74-vote gap has shrunk to a mere 10 votes, and with the momentum now going to the former governor of massachusetts it is hard to imagine how there could be more on the line for these two men tomorrow night at the next presidential debate. chris stirewalt is our fox news digital editor and host of "fox news live." i know you don't say i told you so. but you came on this broadcast in the face of all these polls for weeks and pundits i should add who were saying, it's over, it's over, barack obama has this race sewn, don't bother wa

bret baier will anchor with megyn kelly. he joins us from florida. good to see you. this race could not be tiecter. take a look at some numbers with me, if you will. this wall street journal survey shows the candidates are deadlocked. last week, bret, things got pretty heated. what can we expect tomorrow night? >> bret: a little hesitant to make these predictions because the whole pre-second debate analysis is really going to be tough to be confrontational in the town hall format didn't pan out too well, at least until the first minute of the town hall format before the gloves came off. so this much we know. as you mentioned, this is a foreign policy debate. as you saw on the stage, this is a seated, will look like the vp debate where the men are seated at the table. it's moderated by bob schieffer from cbs. there will be six 15-minute segments started off by a question in each segment, two minutes to answer, and two minutes to respond, and then schieffer will facilitate a discussion on the topic. that's where potentially it gets very interesting. quickly, the topic
