revenue ex motorola was actually up 19%. their clicks are growing at twice the amount as they were growing last year. so any growth company, they go through this and historically when google has pulled back, it's been a great opportunity to buy. liz: it is so hypocritical in a way, it was just -- i want to say two weeks ago, a week and a half ago where everybody says apple was yesterday, google is now the stock. >> somebody bought that yesterday. a lot of people bought it yesterday. probably 30 million shares were traded or more. so it's -- anyway, again, not too much has changed. this is certainly some news. they should clear it up at 4:00. so i would be a buyer on this pullback as long as it opens lower where it is trading right now. liz: do you like internet and tech stocks on balance? have to be fairly choosey of u what you are doing and make sure you are going to the right area. at the end of the day, our country, our world is more and more demanding of tech, companies are getting more and more automated. they are deman

in may, google spent $12.5 billion for motorola's cell phone business. while motorola added more than $2.5 billion in sales in its first full quarter with google, the division still lost money, more than a half-billion dollars. because the news wasn't expected until after the close tonight, trading in google shares was halted for two and a half hours. it restarted with less than an hour before the closing bell, and the stock fell 8%, closing at a five-week low. james dix covers google as an analyst at wedbush morgan. james dix joins us at the nasdaq. i want to start with the ad rates, four quarters in a row google has seen the amount it got paid per click fall, down 15% this past quarter, 16% a quarter ago, 12% at the beginning of the year and late last year down 8%. is it making up for the lower prices by selling more, though? >> yes, i think in part that what is happening, one thing you should pay attention to a little bit this quarter is you had a currency impact on the cost per click, if you excluded the impact of currency it would have been down aro

they will separate questions about motorola's revenue and misses with motorola and was it wise for google to take on a hardware company. you will have a lot of questions about google's revenue picture on ad advertizing and what is happening but get more clicks but make less money per click going forward. liz: the call is beginning but just the preamble where they put in a bunch of legal mumbo-jumbo. they announce larry page will be on the call. if we anticipate what analysts will ask, it will be how can you not telegraph there were bigger problems than the street was expecting from motorola mobility? they acquired that company as a patent mine. they thought they would mine the patents and get hardware for a phone, is that right, adam. >> that's right. there will be a lot of questions about motorola. at the end of the day google has gotten into a huge fight with apple because of their plans regarding android operating system and their movement into mobile delivery devices. they see it as their future. there is pain right now. pcs will in the ever go away but pcs are getting behind us. pcs

motorola did $2.58 billion in revenue. so there are also a lot of costs associated with integrating motorola's business. when i spoke to google executives just several weeks ago, they said that they intended to slowly wind down the feature phone business which is not profitable really at all. they expected to slowly wind that down rather than do a hard core restructuring. that struck me as a little bit odd, but it seemed to be their plan. we'll see if they are changing that now that they see if those built-in costs might be affecting google's overall performance. >> jon, one thing that sticks out to me -- you've had more time to go through the numbers -- is the cost per click. the percentage decrease in the cost per click seems significant at 15%. what do you make of that? >> well, they've been trying to explain that in terms of tweaks that they've been making to the ad placement on pages. for the past couple quarters, analysts have had a lot of questions about costs per click. google's been explaining that saying part of

it's not roll motorola. currency and a lot of site changes the company was making which longer term stand to drive much higher conversions in pricing, but near term, somewhat of a sacrifice. so nothing changes for me fundamentally and i certainly don't think it places google in a position where all of a sudden we're questioning their ability to monetize mobile. especially when they posted a number of $8 billion run rate, too, which i think is extremely impressive. >> is motorola fixable? >> right now i think investors are by and large somewhat disappointed in terms of the loss that google posted on motorola. i think there are questions about really what it will become. >> did you think they would hive off the hardware? some people thought they were buying it for the patents. >> no, because i think when push comes to shove, if they really wanted to just buy the patents, there probably would have been a way to do that. i think they bought the hard way because they felt it was important to have a strategic chip

motorola missed by a billion dollars. i'm not saying again -- the motorola deal is something you can continue to question and say they are scrambling into mobile, but at the end of the day, the revenue miss is pretty explainable and is one off -- or related to lack of execution in terms of their edging. >> i disagree with you on the revenue. i look at it as motorola, somewhere around 300 million. you have pay clicks around 400 million. 100 million on the currency side of it. just to go back a second to the investment banking community. let's look at the analysts who have been right in the wake of this. a $600 price target. exactly what we're talking about tonight, the growth in mobile in phones, in tab lets is clearly outstripping the demand for pc's and this is more of a secular problem. we'll talk later in the show about this. there are winners in technology on that tablet side. you see that tonight with sandisk report. >> what do you make of what happened in google shares today with the huge miss, but after hours as we

so motorola weighed heavily on google's quarter. something else which is interesting although it's not going to be ebitda because this is taxes. google's tax bill went from $268 million last year to $1.33 billion this year so that $1.1 billion jump in taxes and their federal income tax rate was about 22%. i know taxes are a big part of the election year cycle story so i thought i'd throw in that google is doing their fair share, in fact paying $1.1 billion more, that's taking a chunk out of -- not ebitda, but overall numbers. >> thanks brian sullivan. again, recapping the news if you're joining us. google was set the report the earnings after the "closing bell" today, in fact, about 15 minutes ago, the earnings crossed the tape. it's something you don't see often and there's something you don't see often, as well, it's google's worst decline in the stock since 2008, the shares are down some $57, that's a loss of 7.5%, a miss on the top, a miss on the bottom. much more on this developing and breaking story on the other side of the br
