let's move further north up to maryland already under a state of emergency ahead of sandy's arrival. let's go to ocean city, maryland. that's where we find our sandra endo there braving the heavy wind already. >> just like george said, fredricka, we've been feeling a steady wind, about 25 miles an hour here in ocean city. we just came off high tide. check out the waves here. a very rough surf. if anything, ocean city is not experiencing their peak touring season right now, so that may be the only silver lining of this whole storm, but they're certainly bracing for the worst. the mayor here ordering a mandatory evacuation downtown ocean city as well as voluntary evacuation for low-lying areas. also, non-residents are also being forced away from ocean city right now as they're preparing for this storm, and we watched a lot of local residents board up their businesses, board up their homes because the threat of this storm is the high tide which is about to hit in about five hours. the effects of this storm, again, a lingering, long duration of rain and wind, plus the high tide cycles. t

looks like there's a chance it will stall once it does hit into parts of north central maryland and into pennsylvania. that's not a good thing, because once it stalls, it will just sit there and we get more rain and more rain and we're talking torrential rainfall. but look at this cone here of uncertainty. this is huge, because this is also going to be an expansion of where we expect the wind field to be and that wind field is expected to stretch anywhere from the carolinas all the way straight up to maine. some 600 to 700 miles. these winds are going to be gusty, gale force winds as well, gusts that will reach up to 60-plus miles per hour across this area. and that also encompasses the washington, dc, maryland, virginia areas as well, for our viewing region. so those winds, very dangerous. we're talking about a wide path, swath of winds here that are going to be even more dangerous than hurricane irene was. so you really have to take this seriously. here's a look at projected wind gusts. tonight, we're talking about 20 to 25 mile-per-hour range. but look at this on monday by 5:00. gales

the other bands of hurricane sandy are bounding the north carolina and maryland coast right now t storm is 270 miles southeast of cape hatteras. 75-mile-per-hour winds, sandy is moving north and expected to turn toward the east coast tomorrow and collide with a cold front, morphing into a dangerous megastorm. there are mandatory evacuations taking place in the lower lying parts of the state, tolls have been suspended in parts of the garden state park way to help out evacuees. and then on maryland where it too has been declared a state of emergency, there are voluntary evacuations in the lower lying areas and then in downtown ocean city, there are mandatory evacuations already under way and we understand that some of the other states are helping, including that of louisiana, which are helping out the state of maryland and then in d.c., public schools have been closed. sandbags are being distributed. so an awful lot is taking place and as it pertains to the race of the the white house, governor romney had some expected rallies that are planned for virginia in ohio there may be a whole lot
