scott, he will be here in ohio four days this week. >> pelley: thank you, jan. also in ohio is our political director john dickerson. john, how much should we make of romney's new momentum? >> reporter: well, here in the state they're seeing it all over the place. the lines for tickets for an event in the northeastern part of the state were so long that officials here are saying that it might be the biggest of romney's entire campaign. but campaign officials are cautious. they know it's a long slog ahead. if you count the electoral votes that president obama has locked up, he has -- or almost locked up, he has about a 30-vote lead over governor romney so campaign officials are very cautious. they also say that it can be seductive when polls are going very well in lots of different states, campaigns can spend time in a state that they really in the end based on the fundamentals are not likely to win. but i talked to another campaign official who said given the way things were going a week ago, having too many opportunities is a good problem to have. >> pelley: st

>> reporter: good evening, scott. campaign aides tell us the president is much better prepared for tonight's debate than last time. he's spent the past three days doing debate prep in williams williamsburg, virginia, and they tell us after looking at tapes of his first performance the president wants to focus much more heavily tonight on his plans for the next four years, particularly for the middle-class. sounds basic but it's something that top democrats had complained was missing from the first debate. aides also tell us not to expect an overly aggressive president obama tonight. they say that's not his style even though the romney camp is predicting it. they also say it's not the style of tonight's debate. it's a town hall format where most of the questions will be coming not from the moderator but from audience members. these two candidates need to focus just as heavily on connecting with that audience as they need to focus on raining blows on one another, scott. >> pelley: thanks, nancy. john dickerson is our cb

that's where we find our scott cohn in battery park. scott? >> reporter: hi there, scott. at the moment, it's just sort of a miserable, cloudy, cold, rainy day. and if that were the worst of it, that would be fine. earlier this morning at high tide, as we were standing here at the battery, there was water up to about here coming in from new york harbor. when the storm comes through and you have storm surge on top of that and the full moon, you could be looking at water coming up around here. obviously i would not be able to be standing here. that's what has everyone in manhattan worried. because that gets you into all sorts of issues with flooding, steam tunnels, subways, potentially electrical lines. that could cause some damage in addition to just disrupting things. let me give you a sense of what's going on in and around manhattan. the world trade center site, ground zero, the september 11th memorial not too far from here. they have 80 pumps now ready to go in case they need to pump that out. and several hundreds more on standby as well as 1,000 national guard troops ac

chip. >> reporter: well, good evening, scott. here on long beach island, as in many beach communities, people keep building closer and closer to the water. it's a gam welthat many people on the jersey coast have now lost. one after the other, homes along the shoreline on long beach island, new jersey, are in shambles. this one appeared to have floated in from somewhere farther up the beach. massive dunes had been built to protect these homes, but hurricane sandy deposited those countless tons of sand in the street where it takes a bull doze tore carve a path. sandy tossed boats around here like toys, leaving some in piles, others scattered far and wide. bob davis, who rode out the storm in his home nearby, says in 40 years on this island, he's never seen a storm with anything like this kind of power. >> we made it through. and it's just the cleanup now. but it's going to take-- my estimation, with two years to get the island back in shape. >> reporter: kyle scheibner and jen smith's house took on four feet of water. they found sa

( applause ) you know the phrase you always use? obama and biden want to raise taxes by $8 trillion. guess what? yes, we do, in one regard. we want to let that trillion-dollar tax cut expire so the middle class doesn't have to bear the burden of all that money going to the super wealthy.
