let's try back with karen gray houston in burke, virginia now. >> reporter: the polls close here in virginia in a few minutes. at 7:00, and we should be starting to get an indication, not too long after that, about whether this is going to be a red or a blue state. president obama seems to have a slightem in the more recent polls taken over mitt romney. as you know, the only poll that really counts is the one that is going on right now. now, the lines have been long here. voting heavy at the lake braddock secondary school in burke all day long and this houses two precincts. the lake braddock precinct, a larger one and the heaviest voting and the signal hill precinct. we are told by officials that, and i have some numbers here 4600 voters voted and that is out of 7,850 registered voters, which makes it about a 70% turnout, which is awfully heavy and there are about 1,000 absentee ballots that they have to count. now, the voters we spoke to seem to favor president obama and gave us reasons that they think he is more concerned about women, than he is more concerned about the middle school. some

how do you think that's going to play out in how virginia virginia goes in the presidential election? >> virginia is not a state that says it's bad to partner with the president. so my first three years, i partnered with president bush. i worked with him on a lot of key projects. >> no surprises. >> reporter: of course, in 2008, virginia went for barack obama, the first time since 1964 that virginia voted for a democrat for the president. now, tim kaine, of course, is hoping that happens again but the kaine campaign also acknowledges that there are some romney voters and independents who will be voting for kaine as well. now we're going to head over to the george allen headquarters where my colleague andrea mccarron takes over. andrea, what's going on over there? >> reporter: i am with susan allen who in this day and age a candidate's wife seems to log swch mileages the candidate himself. what are you hearing on the road with regards to women's issues? >> it's all about the pocketbook. women are concerned about the economy, whether they can get a job, whether their children can get a

of virginia. as we go to the presidential election, joining us inside the courthouse to discuss the commonwealth of virginia is role in the election, barbara comstock, whose district includes walden, a county. joining her is the chairman of the virginia democratic party. if we could start with you, ye is clouded such a swing county? >> it is an area that has a lot of commuters, professionals, and a lot of people this year who are very concerned with the increase taxes that we would see, do you reversed. as well as the deep defense cuts, which is something that would really impact the area dramatically. george mason and stephen fuller, one of the preeminent economists in our area said the defense cuts could cause a recession in virginia and almost double the unemployment numbers. bridget has been several -- rigid has been scary -- very successful in having a low unemployment rate. jobs is the number one priority. that is why we are very courageous that the numbers of supporters in for mitt romney t

the obama people expected when virginia, the romney people expect when virginia. somebody wins a big, they're probably right on the other side. neil: exit polls can be a lot of things, air, but the economy not surprisingly a dominant issue on a lot of folks-. but it depends how they play it. >> i don't give exit polls the slightest bit of -- neil: nodded >> i was losing by six points in the one buy three. neil: would you buy the fact that the economy would be a dominant force? >> in 04i was in this building. john kerry was winning by 86%. neil: he was putting together his cabinet. >> and 9%. we will find out if the exit polls are right when a couple of states come back and either validate -- neil: some are saying the economy is dominating. not all taking out their wrath of the economy on the president. many still say it is george bush's fault. >> i think we will see. virginia will be a much better test than any of the exit polls. if mitt romney can win virginia by 3 percent for better then republican model is working. if he loses it, well, we are going to need

on in virginia as well. take a look. >> like florida, like florida, the president can afford to lose some of these. i'm not saying his team wants to lose some of these but he has an easier path to 270. that's 29. governor romney cannot afford to lose it. this is 13. romney cannot afford to lose this, either. again, very early. 18%, we will be doing this for awhile, ladies and gentlemen, but governor romney has pulled ahead 57% to 42%. when you look at the map, you say where are the votes. this has to be red. this has to stay red all night long. it has to stay red by margins like that. tiny population centers but governor romney needs to get in the 60s, in the 70%. he's doing what he needs to do out in coal and tobacco country in virginia. the challenge is, is the president doing what he has to do in richmond right now? if this stays this way, mitt romney will win the state of virginia. i don't suspect it will. >> only 6% of the vote. >> gary tuchman was here earlier. this is more of a swing county area. pret
