bill martin is tracking on storm tracker 2. but we begin with john fowler he's like in palo alto and brings us why people are keeping an eye on a levee. >> reporter: because it's raining. you may see some spots on your lens. let me show you san franciscito bridge. it is much higher than when you last saw it. there's 3,700 sandbags here. state crews brought in 3,500 of these sandbag, built some so called chimneys to protect the levee from erosion from beneath. the idea here is that this is a temporary fix for a 82-year-old problem here. and just a little while ago the officials for the joint powers authority told me that the rain tonight should not be enough to push the creek to the near record flows of two nights and and across the bay we found people enjoying tonight's rain. >> it is, it is. it's going to hopefully bring a lot of freshness, right to the valley. clean out the dirty and bring the new for the new year, right? >> with holiday lights there was barely a problem on the roads today. marin county gets 3/4 of its drinki

chief meteorologist bill martin is in the ktvu weather center where he's been tracking the storm all day. maureen naylor is standing by but we begin with jana katsuyama where it's been raining. in healdsburg. >> reporter: see how wet the ground is, all of that water is seeping into the ground and ending up in local rivers and streams this is the russian river. you can see how fast it is going. it could reach near flood levels by the time the next storm finishes. rain is drenching almost soaked roads. areas stream, rivers and low lying areas are flooding. with two storms down there's still one more to go. a storm watch is in effect. >> the storm surge is down 2- 1/2 feet below the bottom of the bridge. >> reporter: although water levels dropped today with the tide flooding signs remained in place for the next storm. concerned residents came out to see the russian river it rose 14 feet in 17 hours covering parts of johnson beach. >> this is high, very high. >> reporter: water crept precariously close to near by homes and one man showed us his dock swept away and floating in the river.

this is our chief meteorologist bill martin said and, bill, it really wasn't as bad as it was the weekend before. >> not even close but it messed up the morning commute it did rain pretty hard in the east bay and parts of the north bay but messes up that morning commute, and it did. the showers are starting to move out towards the south down here. i've had reports up in boulder creek up in the hills of some significant rain fall, moderate rain fall. down in this area i got a few e-mails and facebook responses from some san jose folks and they' seeing light showers down in the santa clara valley. not picking up necessarily on the radar but it's making a little bit of a slow commute in the santa clara valley but things are starting to dry out. now, we've got a ton of rain. i think the most impressive thing, this is since july #1s, we're 183% of rain fall average in santa rosa. that is big. in san jose, 138% of average so it's good. san jose, you know, if we didn't have this last event, by the way, these would be 40, you know, 76. this -- this really did help out a lot. all the problems we h

bill martin is tracking the conditions for us from our weather center. we begin with ken live in the north bay where many nabbeds are still recovering from the last storm. >> reporter: the rain, a light rain started coming down in petaluma just about 20 minutes ago. we're standing in front of the petaluma river, one of many rivers in the north bay that were edging toward flood stage with this series of storms over the weekend, the heaviest on sunday. since then we've had one dry day. the river levels are going down. that's unlikely to change with this rain. this is miller creek in marin wood, scene of a search and rescue by firefighters yesterday when teenagers reportedly playing here were fear swept away. no one of found. today the creek has slowed, much of the danger passed. some rivers are still raging. this is the russian river near forestville. >> so there is kind of a beach in the middle of us here. was a beach. >> george owns river bend rv park much he says these trees which you can only see the tops of now are 20 feet tall. he says the river is r

. >>> our chief meteorologist bill martin has been fending off the question, when is the next rain storm coming? >> it is nothing like what we saw. that is what people are thinking. the last run of storms were a big deal, like 1982, 1988. that series of storms with the final storm. what we have now is a nice break. tomorrow and the next days will be breaks compared to what we have seen. the rain that is coming will be light. it will give you problems on your commutes, wet roads. as you look at san francisco, you can see it is cloudy in san francisco. but there is no rain and we aren't expecting significant rain. for san jose, you know, couple hundredths of an inch. wednesday morning, that could have a good chance of showers. the system is right here. showers tomorrow and it lingers into wednesday morning. into the hills of the north bay, an inch of rain. so tuesday morning, 7:00 a.m., this is the latest model, few sprinkles. drizzle. 1:00, stuff in santa rosa. nothing at 6:00 p.m. might be drizzle but this is mostly a north bay event -- not north bay, north coast. this area, i expect dri

. >>> let's check in with chief meteorologist bill martin. the sun is out but it is still cold. >> it was. temperatures this morning down to freezing. so cold tonight the national weather service issued a frost advisory for parts of the bay area. i will get to that. this is the problem. in terms of why they are not so wet and so cold. coming from here. you can see the location. the path that they follow. coming from the polar regions. the storms are bringing cool air and not a lot of rain. we have a series of storms lined up off shore and they will click through over the next 5-6 days but a they are all non-events except monday. next three, not a big deal. over night lows very cold. 50 in concord. antioch, livermore. we have a frost advisory and you can see you are close to it in napa, fremont. you will have frost in many inland valleys. take precautions. look for tender plants and things that are sensitive to the frost. there will be frost. you will see it in the north bay and south bay as well. 32 in napa, freezing. 33 fairfield. 33 concord

chief meteorologist bill martin is in the ktvu weather center where he's been tracking the storm all day. maureen naylor is standing by but we begin with jana katsuyama where it's been raining. in healdsburg. >> reporter: see how wet the ground is, all of that water is seeping into the ground and ending up in local rivers and streams this is the russian river. you can see how fast it is going. it could reach near flood levels by the time the next storm finishes. rain is drenching almost soaked roads. areas stream, rivers and low lying areas are flooding. with two storms down there's still one more to go. a storm watch is in effect. >> the storm surge is down 2- 1/2 feet below the bottom of the bridge. >> reporter: although water levels dropped today with the tide flooding signs remained in place for the next storm. concerned residents came out to see the russian river it rose 14 feet in 17 hours covering parts of johnson beach. >> this is high, very high. >> reporter: water crept precariously close to near by homes and one man showed us his dock swept away and floating in the river.
