kron 4's charles clifford in the mountains. >> reporter: it's been snowing consistently for almost a week now in the sierra and today was no exception. caltrans is requiring snowchains for drivers along interstate 80 between kingvale and the donner lake interchange. here's why... this is a camera shot from the donner summit. you can see it's snowy and very slow... going wednesday afternoon. this is a few miles further to the east in truckee, pretty slow here as well. you can see cars trying to exit there in truckee. along highway 50, which runs to and from south lake tahoe, chain restrictions are in effect from 9 miles east of placerville to meyers. this is look along 50, in meyers. you can see traffic is pretty much at a standstill. a few miles away in south lake tahoe, you can see big fat snow flakes falling here and a snowplow clearing the road. finally, the sierra avalanche center says there is still considerable danger of avalanches in the higher elevations around lake tahoe. they say that all of this new snow is now sitting on top of an older unstable snow pack and that skiers

charles clifford has a look at conditions as well as details on an avalanche warning in effect around lake tahoe. >> snow returned to the area. the area is very unsettled. it's in effect along interstate 80. let's take a look at a couple of cameras. this is actually where there is a snowplow working on the side of the road to clear the off ramp. lots of fresh snow on the road and it's very slow going for drivers. this is pretty much a blizzard and this is a few miles to the east along interstate 80. you can see a long back up of drivers trying to turn off of the interstate. to the south, here's a view along highway 50 at myers. cars are pulling off here to put on snow chains and is requiring chains on 50 all of us triggered an advisory around lake tahoe. this is north across the lake. the warning area here stretches 80 miles in the north to the south. that includes all of the tahoe area ski resorts. on sunday two people were injured in an avalanche and yesterday on monday a snow border was found dead under two to three feet of snow. late this afternoon we learned that a ski patrol mem

kron 4's charles clifford has more on that. >> reporter: in an effort to accommodate large new years eve crowds and to keep people from drinking and driving, nearly all of all of the bay area's transit agencies will be offering free or extended services on new years eve. bart is going to extend train service until 3am on new years day. they will also be running additional trains into and out of san francisco to accommodate new years eve crowds. if you want to ride muni, service will be free between 8pm new years eve and 6am new years day. along the peninsula, caltrans graphic caltrans will be offering free rides after 11pm through the end of service. fit they will also be running francisco after midnight to help people get home, the last one will leave at 2:15am or whenever it's full. samtrans will also be offering free rides between 11pm and 2am in the east bay ac transit, will be offering extended service on the broadway shuttle, or "free b". the shuttle will run from 7pm to 1am on new years eve. in the south bay, vta will be offering free service on all light rail and bus lines fr

kron 4 urs of charles clifford has details. >> a snow border was caught in an avalanche on monday. they stated that heavy amounts of new snow is sitting on unstable snow which is causing danger. during this latest cause of dangers they have issued advisories are around tahoe. this is a google earth map that is looking around the area. the advisory includes all of the tosco ski resort areas. there stating that people should be careful and the heat when they have warnings. >> they are monitoring weather in the snow. they are very good at noticing that the amount areas may not be safe for customers. the advisory is set to expire on wednesday as the reevaluate the conditions. >> look at this shot on interstate 80. we saw the snow here just for a quick second and will now go to storm tracker 4. storm tracker 4 shows that we have areas of scattered snow showers and we're looking at north bay as well as the south bay. they are producing heavy downpours. we do have gusty winds as well. the showers will decrease is afternoon and we may see some clearing. tonight showers will be ending and t
