dan inouye was as proud as any. as we know, one of the most shameful chapters of american history took place during world war ii, an incredible act of injustice, the united states of america decided to intern japanese americans who lived in california. they were put into internment camps because they happened to be japanese americans. not because they had done anything wrong. not that they didn't love america. but because they happened to be japanese americans. by the way, some of those internment camps were in my home state of arizona. conditions weren't terrible, but they weren't good. people were incarcerated because they happened to be ethnic japanese. in hawaii was a group of young japanese americans who decided that they wanted to serve their country and they wanted to serve in uniform. so one of the most well-known and famous and the most highly decorated unit of the entire war, of world war ii was a battalion in which dan inouye served. they were in many of the most gruesome and difficult ballot -- blood let

that was dan inouye. he was a hero whose entire life's lesson was a victory over discrimination and anger. despite the spinning of bigotry at home, he lost his arm for his country, almost his life, and rather than being consumed by rancor, he became a voice for reconciliation. because of what he had experienced growing up as a japanese-american in what was still a heavily segregated country, dan always fought to make sure that no americans ever felt unsafe or unwelcome. this is our country, he famously said in his keynote address at the democratic national convention in chicago in 1968. i still remember watching that speech. i was riveted watching it. i was in the navy serving then, watching that chicago convention. i was training before departing for vietnam. and it was strange, the juxtaposition of dan inouye's words and the hope and what he represented, juxtasuppose juxtae carnage in the streets, watching what seemed to be a country coming apart at the seams. but there was in young united states senato

person is senator dan inouye. inouye said how can that he and george gallup said while senator i suspect so many americans have never seen a united states senator of japanese ancestry with one arm and a distinguished voice and presence and you have made an indelible impression on the american people. that was 1973. that was a long time ago and since then dan inouye has made an indelible impression on the great many people around the world, especially on the 100 of us who serve here. he commanded our respect in a remarkable way. part of it was because of his service in the war. he and bob dole, our former colleague, literally were wounded at about the same time in europe and were in the same hospital recovering from tremendously serious wounds. senator inouye of course was awarded the congressional medal of honor for that. senator pryor was telling a story that's when senator inouye was finally elected to congress he rode senator dole aide notes that said, i am here. where are you? because both of them when they we

my friend, dan inouye. i was telling senator lieberman that the senate put on a little bit of a retirement dinner for retiring senators, including senator inouye. it was only two weeks ago, mr. president. he wasn't well, but he came to the dinner and he sat at the table because of his respect for the individual senators and this institution and the love he had for them and for the institution. i will miss dan inouye so much. his big heart and his self-effacing manner and his integrity and patriotism. i will just say a couple of things. over the years, we have all worked together, so many of us on some issues. i worked on bringing a state-of-the-art comprehensive casualty care center to my state. to take care of the wounded veterans were coming home. without their limbs, those with poster might stress, and all the problems they had. there was no such place on the west coast. with dan's help, and senator stevens, we got it done. so the facility stands as a tribute to dan inouye. in 2010 i had a very difficult

we will miss dan inouye so much here in the senate. his leadership, his legislative talent, yes, but also his friendship, his humor, his humility, his steadfast belief in the american people. he was the last remaining senator who voted for the civil rights act of 1964. and in that vote and so many others, he served the nation and the senate with distinction that few have ever matched. in michigan we proudly claim an early connection to this noble man. much of his recovery from the wounds that he suffered in italy took place at a veterans hospital in battle creek, michigan. there, he met two other young men, a soldier from kansas named bob dole, and one from michigan named phil hart. they formed a lifelong bond, one that endiewrd all the way to the u.s. senate. in 2003 when we dedicated that
