gregg: let's pick up the story with david lee miller live in our new york newsroom. david? >> reporter: gregg, the questions at this hour remain unanswered, who was the shooter and what was his motive? this is what we do know. it was about 5:35 when the west webster firefighters responded to a house fire. there you see the blaze. two of the firefighters shot and killed at the scene. two others seriously wounded. a police officer off-duty from a nearby police department was also wounded, hit by shrapnel. the blaze then spread to other homes. the firefighters unable to contain it. finally police did arrive. there was a shootout and the shooter was killed, not clear at this hour if his injuries were self-inflicted. we do expect a news conference is going to take place within the hour. it is expected that we will learn more information about the shooter and what his motive might have been in this christmas eve tragedy. gregg? gregg: all right. david lee miller, we'll go to the news conference when it begins. thanks very much, david. heather: well new concerns that the president

jamie: david lee miller has been following the story since yesterday, and david lee the police chief himself was in tears when he reported this because four firefighters were actually shot when they went to respond to the fire. they still don't even know who may be in that house, right? >> that's right, jaime. this is a community that has been devastated. i can tell you that now we are learning very new disturbing details about the apparent shooter. this as the investigation continues into the ambush that led to the death of two upstate firemen as well as the serious injury of two others. during a news conference a new minutes ago police say the shooter was armed with three weapons, including a semi automatic. police say spangler, an ex-con was not permitted to have firearms. the investigation into how he obtained them continues. a police chief told reporters that he left behind a multi-page note. he would not reveal the full contents of that note but said it tk show that he had a desire to create as much carnage as possible. >> i'll read to you one of the sentences out of the two pa

david lee miller live in our new york newsroom with the latest. david lee, what can you tell us? >> reporter: many details are still sketchy, heather but at this hour i can tell you firefighters were responding to a blaze at 6:00 this morning in the town of webster. webster is a suburb of rochester, new york. it is difficult to fight a fire when temperatures are 30 degrees. someone according to media reports, someone opened fire on firefighters. two firefighters are being treated. they will not disclose to fox news the reason for the ailment. the ap is quoting a local newspaper saying one firefighter is listed in satisfactory condition. officials are telling local mediaone of the firefighters was hit in the back side by someone again who opened fire. you can see that the house is still burning. it has spread to a second home. there are report that is the area is not secure and because of that, firefighters are unable to battle the blaze. local residents are being evacuated. a special s.w.a.t. team has now been brought in to evacuate them. residents who do not want to leave are to
