janine de la vega joins us live from a creek that overflowed, good morning. >> reporter: well the san francisco creek has definitely receded and the water is flowing well but you see that mark, it was just below the white, a foot below that so it has definitely receded. let's go to video, you can see just how high water came up near the creek.

janine de la vega is in morgan hill with the specific area which has been targeted, jeanine? >> reporter: they call it the green leaf neighborhood in east dunn. we saw a patrol car in the past hour driving through this neighborhood and burglars are hitting this area in the daytime and night time hours and police say there have been reports of 23 burglaries here. eight homes have been broken into, and they have hit 15 cars parked in the neighborhood during the night. thieves are smashing car windows and crabbing what they can. the recent spike is making them take precaution. >> make sure their doors are locked and i take them with me and my truck and when i get home i take them out of my truck and i know there is nobody breaking into cars. >> reporter: that gentleman said he worked out of his car all day and that's why he feels safe taking his valuables with him. and investigators say nobody has been caught for any of these crimes and at this point they do not know if any of the crimes are related. janine de la vega ktvu channel 2 morning news. >>> time now 6:06, police are cl

janine de la vega joins us live from palo alto with the very latest, jeanine? >> reporter: well we are right near the border where you can see the san francisco creek and in the last hour, the water has receded and i just checked, it is at 9 feet and you couldn't even see that tree branch but the water was at 15.9 feet. this is video of where i was standing and you can see how high water came. it crested on woodland and is over the entrance of the four seasons hotel. police were escorting people away from the floodwaters and residents were monitoring the flood levels and had sandbags to protect their homes. even though there is no massive damage they are worried about flooding where the river bends. >> we have areas where the water has undermind the levee itself and continues to undermind the levee. >> reporter: this is what the southbound lanes looked like north of embarcadero. the creek was literally flooding the freeway and chp was helping most wrists -- motorists far gate. -- navigate. an emergency shelter was opened for people who may have needed this beca

janine de la vega is at the scene. she's been there since 4:30. so i know you just talked to someone who may have known this person. what do you know? >> reporter: well, i'm told by relatives that a man who lives here in this apartment complex believes that the body discovered here was his son. now the coroner has yet to confirm the sex or identity of the victim but at 1:15 this morning residents of this apartment complex near hamillton called 911 because they saw smoke coming from the storage unit from the carport in the back of the complex. they found and attached storage unit on fire. they quickly extinguished it and found a body inside. along with it there were miscellaneous items and alcohol. they came to the scene to gather evidence. at this point they are not calling this a homicide. the cause of the fire and death are undetermined. >> at this point we are still looking into the the details that led up to this. we are working side by side with the county investigators. >> reporter: we saw the people hugging. two of them told us they believe

ktvu janine de la vega has a look at the sketch police hope will lead them to an arrest. janine. >> reporter: pam, th morning police are combing through evidence they found in this mansion. they will not tell us how the homeowner was killed but they did release a sketch of the suspect. he is described as white or latino between 23-24 years old. he's around six feet tall and described as being skinny with black hair and dark eyes. this man and several others broke into this home early friday morning. when officers arrived, they found the house was ransacked and the body of 66koomra. his wife was beaten but did not have any serious injuries. he is the former owner of the historic winery. it's unknown if this couple was targeted or if this was a random home invasion robbery. police want anyone who might have information about the victim or if you recognize the man in the police sketch to give police a call. reporting live janine de la vega ktvu channel 2 news. >>> people on both sides of the same sex marriage issue will be closely watching the supreme court this morning. jus

ktvu ajanine de la vega is there now with exclues -- ktvu's janine de la vega is there now. >> reporter: nobody called police until this morning. a neighbor called 911 after seeing people in front of the home loading property into several cars. when officers arrived, they found a front door open and around 300 harvest the marijuana plants. this is exclusive video that we have obtained that shows how packed the house was with plants. officers found jugs with chemicals in the bathroom and were overcome with fumes. now police inspected the backyard and found the grower to tamper with the wiring so pg&e wouldn't realize how much power they were using. >> you don't know what's gonna explode or what is not, you know, what kind of chemicals they have there. that's our concern. he lives next door. >> reporter: police determined this home was specifically used as a sophisticated growhouse. they confiscated a lighting system and transformers and other equipment found throughout the house. the marijuana plants had a street value of around $100,000. now, back out here live, the narcotics detectives

janine de la vega has more on what happened there, good morning. >> reporter: everything is quiet at this moble home park but last night there was all sorts of people needing help after being exposed to fumes. people inside a moble home park on bay road set off a bug fogger used to kill fleece. they did not -- flees. they did not leave the home and when firefighters came they were exposed as well. they were sheltered in place and were taking in hazardous vapor. they were able to stop the fogger but eight people were taken to the hospital for treatment, three residents, three firefighters and two ambulance workers and we are told the first responders are okay but we don't know the condition of the people who actually live at this moble home park and we put in a call to find out but they have not gotten back to us yet. i went on the website and it clearly said if you are going to use this type of fogger you have to leave your home and shut all the windows and doors and clearly that did not happen here. janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 morning news. >>> let's go back over to sal and ch

ktvu channel 2 news' janine de la vega has more on this story, janeane? >> reporter: police tell me he was driving drunk and you can see the damage in the front of the that truck. we are told the driver crashed into the apartment complex that you see across the street. the driver was driving eastbound on taylor when he crashed into the apartment complex. half of the truck crashed into the bedroom where a two-year- old girl was sleeping in a crib. he tried to back out and tried to escape and in the meantime the people were frantically searching for their little girl. we are told the girl was taken to the hospital and is expected to be okay. witnesses say the driver tried to drive away but his truck broke down and that's when authorities got to the scene and arrested him. he is eye didn't paid to as joseph austin and he was arrested for driving under the influence. residents here are shaken up, two adults and two children live in that apartment complex but there is a gaping wall there so there is bound to be a lot of clean up there this morning. janine de l

ktvu's janine de la vega has covered one fire in campbell, now at another. janine? >> reporter: well, this fire seems to be out. we're here at the courtyard marriott off creekside way in campbell. firefighters are going door to door telling people to leave their homes. they are only allowed on on the ground level. at about 8:15, smokes with scene on the 7th floor and the fire alarm woke up. many guests were woken up. they came out of the hotel room in their pajamas. firefighters arrived and they seemed to spot smoke on the 7th floor. they never saw flames. but as a precaution, they evacuated the fifth, sixth and seven seventh floor. this -- and seventh floor. this is one guest. >> get up, get out, see what's going on. we were a little disoriented when we first woke up. but we just following else down the stairs and exited. >> reporter: again, just as a precaution, firefighters are now having all of the guests come down to the ground level while they investigate to see sort of what sparked this apparent fire. again, only smoke was scene and this situation has calmed

ktvu's janine de la vega has exclusive video about what was found inside and how neighbors are responding. >> reporter: police walked out of this home with boxes of evidence early this morning. officers were originally called here at around 3:00 when a neighbor thought the house was being burglarized after seeing the garage door open and people loading up cars with pro property. instead, this is what police found. we were allowed inside and obtained exclusive video of the harvested plants. in all,00 were discovered -- 300 were discovered. >> they had a ventilation system, a light system, beyond anything i've seen in my experience. a water filtration system. >> reporter: police say when they arrived, no one was home and the front door was opened. investigators determined no ones lived here because the house was professionally modified to grow marijuana. chemical jugs were found in the bathroom. one officer started to feel fill. firefighters were called in. they determined it was fertilizer. neighbors were stunned. >> we have a 5-week-old and to have this across the street is just really, r

janine de la vega has more in san jose to tell us how that family is doing. jeanine? >> reporter: i spoke to the father of the two-year-old little girl and in her bedroom the truck crashed into her room. the truck crashed into that chain link fence and into her bedroom. the driver of this truck was traveling eastbound on taylor when he veer flood a lane of oncoming traffic and crashed into the side of the apartments. his truck crashed into two bedrooms and here is a look at the damage. the truck first crashed into a room with an 8-year-old where 2- year-old girl was sleeping. >> i didn't see my baby in there and i saw her on the ground and she started crying and that's what i was really glad for, she was crying. >> we have a video we just took a short time ago, even after she was thrown on the floor and taken to the hospital, doctors say she is okay and the driver of the truck backed out of the building and tried to escape bus his truck broke down and police arrested him for hit-and- run. he is identified as joseph austin of san jose and the speed limit here a long ta

that's where janine de la vega is. >> reporter: the fire happened behind the four plex. i just spoke to a neighbor who lives in this four plex and she explained how sad this was. a fire broke out and the firefighters quickly extinguished the fire. when they opened the door, they found a body inside. it's unclear what the person was doing inside but there were miscellaneous items in there, along with a bottle of alcohol. police are not calling this death a homicide. right now, the cause is undetermined. >> we've talked to the residents here and the owner of the storage unit. >> reporter: what are they saying? >> nothing suspicious was seen by the neighbors and we're looking into other possible issues. >> reporter: well, we saw this group of people that -- hugging earlier. they were looking very emotional. they told us that the ownern of the storage unit who lives here at the fourplex believes the person who died was his son. he said his son does have access to the unit even though he does not live there. but again, there's been no identification on thed aboutdy. we don't

janine de la vega is on the scene where a man was stabbed just hours ago. good morning, janine. >> reporter: good morning, tori. well, we know that witnesses are back at the police station getting interviewed. here on the scene, investigators are inside this photographry business called the agency here on oakland road. police say at 3:00 a.m. this morning, they received a 911 call from someone saying a man had been stabbed. they arrived and were told by witnesses that during a party a fight broke out and a man was stabbed once in the stomach. he was rushed to the hospital but died. police are still trying to figure out what the argument was about. >> we don't have any motive for the homicide. but we are actively investigation. we are investigating the incident this morning. >> reporter: police tell us the victim was 30 years old. he's not been identified because they are trying to get in touch with his family. now, we were told that by -- by one of the guests that this was a graduation party but that guest wouldn't tell us much more than that. we do know th

ktvu's janine de la vega is in morgan hill and you've been talking to neighbors. what do they say? >> reporter: well, they are telling me that they have heard about all of these burglaries in the area. the news is spreading fast belong the people who live here in this green leaf neighborhood near 101. you can see the person who owns this home actually chained their dear lawn -- their deer lawn ornament to the tree since it wouldn't be stolen. there's been 23 burglaries here. eight homes have been broken into during the day. they are taking electronics, jewelry. officers say those thieves are smashing windows and grabbing what they can. people we spoke to this morning are troubled by the news. >> it's very concerning because, you know, you feel that you might be in a safe neighborhood and especially when you have children that are in the neighborhood. you know, cars and christmastime and how this might affect, you know, people that we know and love in our neighborhood. >> reporter: we found these two cars with the engines running and no one inside, just in the last 10, 15 minutes. t

ktvu's janine de la vega just talked to one of the victims. so what did they say? >> reporter: well, they are thinking about the memories last night and they said they had -- it was just a very -- he was released from the hospital. his neighbors we're told are back at home safe. he thinks that they are still sleeping right now. he tells me his symptoms were terrible. he couldn't smell anything but had a difficult time breathing. just after eight last -- after 8:00 last night, the fire department was called to a mobile home on bay road. the elderly couple who lived inside set off a fogger used to fill fleas. firefighters say they did not leave the house and started to feel ill. firefighters say that couple's two dogs -- they had two dogs and didn't realize that they needed to leave the house when they set off the fogger. firefighters arrived and they were exposed as well. here's what victims had to say. >> i didn't smell anything for a while. but then i started to taste it in my mouth and i got cotton mouth right away. i got this headache and walked out front, the f

ktvu's janine de la vega is in san jose. you've been out there since 4:0 and you just talked to the -- 4:30 and you just talked to the fire official. what are they saying? >> reporter: well, there's still no cause. but the fire official said they will most likely not have investigators come out this morning. they've been spending time in the second-story apartment. they feel they have what they need to figure out the cause. this all started from an apartment that is boarded up because of the severe damage inside. yesterday, residents came back to their apartment to gather essentials. the fire broke out here at 11:00 on saturday night. the red cross is helping house 47 adults an 26 children because there is no electricity in the building and there's still water and smoke damage. their neighbors, a man, his wife, and daughter died in the apartment before firefighters could reach them. neighbors told us in spanish how they feel for the little girl's mother. janine de la vega is live at the creek to show us some of the damage. >> reporter: well, we're right here on the border of palo alto and east palo alto. this is highway 101 and the creek flows right underneath it and the water was so high last night that it was flashing up over and onto the freeway. this is video of that same area of what it looked like last night. water was flooding on 101, north of the embarcadero. the highway patrol was helping motorists with traffic breaks. the creek crested at university avenue and woodland. the water spilled over and into the entrance of the four seasons hotel. fire officials say even though there was not massive damage, they remain worried about the creek. >> we need to work on these holes in this levy. can't leave it like this especially since we're early in the winter and this is the second significant storm and we were feeling the first one was gonna overbank and this time it did. >> reporter: residents who live near the creek were monitoring the levels and had sandbags ready. they were -- had 36 people who voluntarily evacuated their homes

ktvu's janine de la vega is in palo alto to tell us exactly what happened. janine? >> reporter: dave, i actually just met with police just a couple of minutes ago. they are calling these crimes heinous and they are taking them very seriously. the latest one happened here in the 300 block of university avenue. a woman who was sleeping in -- in an enclosure here in front of a vacant business was assaulted by a man. that incident happened at 1:30 on sunday morning. police say the woman was in her 70s and woke up to a man trying to reach into her pocket. when she pushed him away, he hit her repeatedly in the head, face and chest. that ran -- that man ran away empty-handed and then a woman in her 30s was walking and listening to music with headphones on and she was jumped from behind and pushed to the ground. the man tried to take her purse but when she resisted, officers say the man punched her in the face six to eight times. police want everyone to be on heightened alerts when they walk ahome. >> we're doing everything to step up the patrols. we want everybody to be sa

joining us from sacred heart, you know all about these donations good morning, janine de la vega. >> reporter: it is the toy room and it really looks like a toy store. everything is broken into categories, bikes, books and then over there you can see some arts and crafts and this is where all the parents will come in at 10:00 a.m. now there are already people waiting outside the building in the cold all bundled up. they wanted first pick because about 20 people will get shuttled into this room at a time. more families have signed up to receive toys this year compared to last year. today and tomorrow, the nonprofit will be handing out 500,000 books and toys to kids which have been donated. >> moms and dads will be paired up with a volunteer that will help them shop and walk through the room. they have 10 or 15 minutes to go through and pick out toys as well as books for their children and each child gets about three items. >> sacred heart is still short about 400 gifts and the areas they are free on is books for teens. you can see some of the things they still have here, makeup and ha

janine de la vega joins us live from a creek that overflowed, good morning. >> reporter: well the san francisco creek has definitely receded and the water is flowing well but you see that mark, it was just below the white, a foot below that so it has definitely receded. let's go to video, you can see just how high water came up near the creek. it nearly crested at westshore bay road and there were several areas that flooded. police helped to keep many away from the rising water and many used sandbags to keep the water from their homes. >> we parked and i got my rain boots on and i came here and up saw like everything was out and right here there was like a river. >> this is what the southbound lanes look like north of embarcadero. the chp was helping most wrists -- motorists navigate and chp ended up opening an emergency shelter for residents who were affected by the storm. by 11:45 last night, they ended up leaving and back out here live, the situation seems to be back to normal and the water here at the creek is definitely down. it is not raining with all the roads, they are just so

ktvu janine de la vega is there with the latest details of what happened and where. janine. >> reporter: we are here on oakland road at a business park. the homicide unit is in route. they quarantined off this area where you see the agency. that is a photography business where the man was fatally stabbed. police say they received a 911 call around 3:00 this morning a man had been stabbed at that business called the agency. they arrived and found a group of people at the scene who say they were having a party when a fight happened. >> we do know it was some type of argument. what it's about we still don't know. we have several witnesses we're talking to and none of the suspects have been identified at this point. >> reporter: some witnesses left the scene before police arrived. we know the man was stabbed in his stomach. he was rushed to the hospital where he died soon after. now it's unknown if the stabbing occurred inside that business or outside in the parking lot. the police tell us they haven't started gathering evidence just yet because they are waiting for the
