. >>> lorraine blanco is live with a power outage and any details with that, good morning lorraine. >> reporter: you can see there is no power in this neighborhood and pg&e is hard at work trying to restore power to as many customers as they can. a few hundred customers are without power off the 580 east in oakland and they say the power started as they crashed into a power pole right there. let's look at what we saw when we got closer to that crash. the driver of the nissan altima was going left when she crashed. she kept going yet crashed into another vehicle. she spun out, hit that power pole splashed it in half and knocked out power to 6,000 customers. that driver left the scene and police are looking for her this morning. pg&e will try to get power to a couple hundred customers in the next 30 minutes so it will be just a few dozen without power but those people will be without power until the late morning hours so it is going to be a very dark morning for many customers this morning at least 40 customers for the next five or six hours. lorraine blanco ktvu channel 2 morning news.

ktvu lorraine blanco has been on the story since 4:30. so what do you know about what happened out there? >> reporter: well, dave, the fire started in that stolen vehicle you were talking about. it was right about here. and spread to the building you see right there. now this morning a crew is picking up some of the wreckage out here. they will board it up and they will secure it as police try to track down the person or persons who started the fire. this is exclusive video you will see only on 2. the fire started in a stolen vehicle just after midnight. it spread to a nearby building. the owner says this is a telephone and computer networking company. the battalion chief tells us a security guard was inside during the fire. he is treated for smoke inhalation and is expected to be okay. neighbors thought it would spread to nearby homes. they are grateful for very skilled firefighters. >> i wouldn't want anyone to get hurt. there are a lot of young families living in a cold sack over there. my son is right around the corner himself. >> rep

lorraine blanco is at cnh enterprises right now. firefighters are looking out for flairups out there. >> reporter: they are babysitting the smoke this morning. it's smoldering in the center of the building. that's what we are told this morning. you can see what is left is a gutted charred mess. these are the offices in the front of the building. management says they are working furiously to open a new location. it started in the warm springs company around 1:45 yesterday afternoon. the flames and smoke were so heavy and the chemicals inside the machine shop were so combustible firefighters had to battle it from the outside. all 80 or so employees got out safely but the building was destroyed. >> when you stop and think about something like this, it's like you know my personally my problems are trivial and i don't care about my problems. this is a whole big company that is really going to have issues. >> reporter: from hearing these employees you really get the feeling this was a good place to work. the director of operations estimat

let's go to lorraine blanco. how did it happen and how is it affecting the commute? >> reporter: i'm not sure if you can hear me because i can't hear you guys but i can tell you what i know so far. there is a ladder truck on broad street, 119 broad street, it is a three-story apartment building which caught fire this morning and there was some heavy smoke on the second floor when firefighters arrived. it is in the rear of this three- story apartment building. all people were evacuated and they are all okay but a firefighter was injured and it sounds like he suffered from smoke inhalation. he has non-life threatening injuries and we are told there are 20 fire companies out here. they got the fire under control about 15 minutes ago and the cause is under investigation this morning. down the road here on broad street, i'm not sure if you can see it, but there is a muni car and they have the evacuees down there and they have the heater going so they could stay warm while firefighters get these hot spots under control here. it sounds like for the most part there were no m

ktvu's lorraine blanco is there at the scene on broad street. now we know about three dozen people have been affected by this. what happened, lorraine? >> reporter: that's right, dave. there was a fire here early this morning. half of those residents that were evacuated today are children, 18 kids right before christmas. you can see some of them behind me over here. they have big black bags. they were allowed to go and grab a forthinks to take with them wherever they are gonna go. firefighters say there's quite a lot of damage inside especially on the second floor. the woman who lives in the apartment where the fire started told me she saw the flames by her tv of when firefighters arrived at 5:30 at this apartment building, they encountered a lot of black spoke. one firefighter had to be -- black smoke. one firefighter had be transported for smoke inhalation. >> i had a firefighter exit the building suffering from smoke inhalation. he's been transported to kaiser for evaluation. >> reporter: the firefighter is expected to be okay. no residents s
