a warning this morning for residents in morgan hill. police report a jump in burglaries over the past month. ktvu's janine de la vega is in morgan hill and you've been talking to neighbors. what do they say? >> reporter: well, they are telling me that they have heard about all of these burglaries in the area. the news is spreading fast belong the people who live here in this green leaf neighborhood near 101. you can see the person who owns this home actually chained their dear lawn -- their deer lawn ornament to the tree since it wouldn't be stolen. there's been 23 burglaries here. eight homes have been broken into during the day. they are taking electronics, jewelry. officers say those thieves are smashing windows and grabbing what they can. people we spoke to this morning are troubled by the news. >> it's very concerning because, you know, you feel that you might be in a safe neighborhood and especially when you have children that are in the neighborhood. you know, cars and christmastime and how this might affect, you know, people tha

: the ordeal lasted nearly seven hours in this home on caldwell court in morgan hill. the handyman was lured here, beaten and forced to do repair work on household appliances. >> told him we are going to kill you if you don't do what we tell you, we want you to fix these things around the house. out of fear and the unknown. >> reporter: according to the sheriff's office those threats and assault came from 36-year-old and a 33-year-old who live at the house. what brought the handyman here was a dispute over work he had done for a relative of one of those suspects they allegedly forced them to drive to the chevron station in san jose on the way to finish work on the other home. left at this pump, the handyman bolted from his truck as the accused kidnappers were inside shopping for snacks. >> until the police showed up, pointed the gun at the window and said i'm gonna shoot you in the face. that's when i recommended the guy, i said hey, probably be a good idea, you know, did what the man said. >> reporter: even though authorities say there was no gun or weapon used, suspe

most of it is down here in the south bay in the morgan hill area. the activity is really light at this point although morgan hill moderate to light rain fall right there on the highway so you've got a little bit of slowdown there but quickly passing through the area. when it drys out it's going to cool off and be foggy in the morning hours so temperatures going to be in the upper 40s, low 50s. dew points are in the low 50s, upper 40s so when the dew point temperature is reechd, you're going to get fog, inland valley fog, lots of places tomorrow morning. so if you're used to having fog you're going to get it again tomorrow morning especially this time of year with this time of pattern. so tonight fog is back in the forecast. showers will kind of linger. there's a few sprinkles in and out in places mainly in the south bay and certainly by sunrise fog is the main concern and the extended forecast calls for more fog because the high pressure is going to dominate our landscape as we go into the next three, four, five, six, seven days. we've got a nice lo

it started at a home in morgan hill ended hours later at a san jose gas station. it was monday morning the 50- year-old handyman got called to a mansion near morgan hill. for the next six hours, a man and woman allegedly beat the handyman, threatening to kill him and forced him to do some minor repair work. the victim had done some work for one of the suspects' mothers two months ago. >> the work wasn't performed to the likes of the suspect's relative at the time. and on top of that there was a dispute over services rendered. the victim wasn't paid entirely. >> the suspects were apparently going to do more work for the relative. the man got away and called police. the suspects are due in court tomorrow. >>> new this morning, clerical workers and longshoreman at the nation's largest port complex will return to work today after a 9 day strike. negotiators reached agreement to end the strike last night. the details have not been released yet. but it needs to be ratified by union members. the union was frustrated about shipping employers outsourcing jobs and the strik
