joining me now olivia's cousin, john engel. john, how can you and the family deal with what's happened? i know this is the question everyone is asking you, but it is completely mysterious to us who have never experienced the loss of a 6-year-old like this. >> it's completely mysterious to us. thank you for reading that. that's the first thing the parents said is we want olivia to be remembered. we talked about it today, and they said we're so gratified to see the outpouring of support on facebook, people writing in, and they're saying not your daughter, but they're saying we've seen olivia's pictures, and we know who she is, and i have a daughter like that, and that's been hugely gratifying for all of us. >> reading those things about her, i was just thinking of my daughter. pretty much exactly the same set of interests, and there's such an easy connection, i think, that we all have to this tragedy. we can feel it very personally, very closely. her funeral is on friday this week? >> yes, it is. >> and what do you see after that

in a statement to cnn, the engel family said, "olivia's loss, physical loss, will be felt every day by those who love herd most but her sparkly spirit will live on." according to her father, brian, her favorite comers were pink and purple and every night, erin, every night, she sat at the dinner table and led grace for the family. she was just 6 years old, just a devastating time for the engle family. one other family that we have heard from is the family of jessica rekos. jessica 6 years old, the family, as you can imagine, did not want to talk at length about jessica's loss but did want her to be remembered. they also issued statement to cnn. i want to read that to you, they said "jessica loved everything about horses. she devoted her free time to watching horse movies, reading horse books, drawing horses and writing stories about horses. we had promised her she could have her very own horse when she turned 10. this year, she asked santa for a new cowgirl boots and a cowgirl hat. sheafs creative, beautiful little girl who loved playing her little brothers, travis and shane." right no

. >> clayton: and olivia engel, apparently this photo was released by olivia's mother and appeared in the new york post this morning and as we continue to talk about what unfolded that day and of course, you look at the horrible images and many people were reminded what happened and unfolded in columbine, of course. then on friday, this was exacerbated this discussion about gun control and whether or not there should be armed guards in every school put forward by the n.r.a. if you think about one town in marlboro, new jersey has adopted now what appears to be a program, they've certainly moved quickly on this, going to permit an armed cop in each of the nine schools starting on january 2nd. >> kelly: they actually launched this prior to the n.r.a., something they were putting in place on the heels of what took place at sandy hook elementary school in newtown, connecticut. they wanted to do something, the mayor of that town said we will spare no expense, we must take care of our children and why they're putting armed guards in all of their schools, getting back to what the n.r.a. said,

rose engel, therapist, rachel davino, 7-year-old student, grace gay, and 6-year-old student, christopher dylan jack hockley. they were all remembered today. joining me now is connecticut's democratic senator-elect murphy. congressman murphy, you couldn't listen to wayne lapierre's speech today because you were busy in newtown? >> i was, when he made that statement i was at grace's funeral. and by the time i got to the second funeral of the day that i attended, little dylan hockley's funeral, people there had heard or read the statement, and the whispers through that hall of hundreds were frankly in horror. i can't speak for everybody in newtown. but i think there is a lot of shock and disgust right now in newtown, when they heard that the nra came to the table today and said that the solution for what happened to us in newtown was to have more guns on the streets. to have more guns in our schools. that we don't have enough assault weapons out there to adequately protect us. this was as revolting and as tone-deaf a statement as i have ever seen from any political entity in my short time i

olivia engel, age 6. dylan hockley. those were the children. here are the names of the teachers. dawn hochsprung, avenlg 27. anne marie murphy, age 52. lauren rousseau, 30. mary sherlach, 56. rachel davino, age 49. madam speaker, these were real people, real victims, real children and real pictures of newtown, connecticut. the people of connecticut can relate to these victims of the assault and all americans can relate to some extent this crime that's occurred. at this elementary school. madam speaker, i have four kids and 10 grandkids, three of my daughters are teachers by profession. my wife is a first grade elementary school teacher. and no parent, no parent ever wants to bury their child. they just don't want to do that. we never want our children to die in their youth. like these children did. so, madam speaker, we mourn with the families of connecticut. we must honor the victims in our prayers and in our words and ask the good lord to bless them, their families, the people of connecticut and yes, our country. and that's just the way it is. i yield back. the speaker pro temp
