abc's juju chang reports from newtown, connecticut. >> reporter: sandy hook elementary school is closed tomorrow. and when the children return it will be to a different campus. the town is covered with memorials like this one that take on a feeling of a sacred sight as people make pilgrimages from all over. under a cold steady rain, a wave of communal grief washes over newtown. memorials growing in sets of 20 for the children. 20 christmas trees, 20 poinsettias, 20 angels. today the first funerals in a found whose faith is being tested in ways it could never have imagined. >>> for six-year-old jack pinto a huge new york giants fan. and noah pozner whose sister survived in another classroom. the rabbi struggled for the right words. today a much tougher task, a eulogy for a six-year-old as a woman collapsed outside in grief, the rabbi inside tried to find words to comfort noah's grieving mother. >> i looked at her and said i personally believe in the eternity of the soul. >> and did noah's family respond the to that? >> yes. that was helpful to her. in the end she released blue and white

here's what we know this morning about what happened at sandy hook elementary school. in about 30 minutes we expect authorities to hold a news conference right where i am and release the identities of the victims. police say 20 children between the ages of 5 and 10 were killed as well as six adults at the school including the principal and psychologist. sources say adam lanza was armed with three guns, two on him, one found in a car nearby. police say he got the guns from his mother who owned them. she was licensed to have them. she was found dead in her home about 2 1/2 miles from where i am now. every new detail helped paint a picture of a horrifying tragedy. cnn's anderson cooper explains how it unfolded moment by moment. >> all units, the individual i have on the phone is continuing to hear what he believes to be gun shots. >> reporter: the first word was chilling. it only got worse. >> they're reporting multiple fatalities involved in this shooting at the elementary school. >> reporter: with each new report, the horror deepened. >> reports say the number of dead c

sandy hook remains an active crime scene. it is still closed. hundreds of newtown teachers and staff met with a national expert on kids and bereavement, as well as state mental health counselors. for the students and their families it is a return to healthy and helpful routine. here's sandra endo. >> reporter: in the wake of tragedy, a step towards normalcy, for newtown kids, that means going back to school. >> we also are going to be a little bit worried, because we know what we thought was a secure school had this happen to them. >> reporter: but facing fear may be the first step to overcome this tragedy. >> children have to get back to school. if we let this sort of terror in our lives anywhere in this country win, you know, we've lost. we've got to get our kids back to school again. >> reporter: classes are resuming for 5,400 students in the district except for those at sandy hook elementary. monday all schools were closed as teachers and administrators trained with experts on how to handle the aftermath. many parents we spoke with agree, ki

so, they did that in sandy hook and it saved lives. we will do that exact same thing should that event happen at any point in san francisco, and we're going to train so that that's the case for as long into the future as we can see to keep our kids safe. i, like supervisor cohen, want to applaud the mayor's leadership on this, to identify the most lethal ammunition, and to have allow the citizens to allow the police department to maintain the database. being the first city in the country to make that ammunition illegal as you will hear later, dr. campbell from probably the best trauma ward in the country will tell you what that ammunition does to people when they are hit by it. and then, again, to ask for a reporting on people that purchase as much or more as 500 rounds of ammunition so we cannot only track those people that are buying ammunition, but frequency of purchase as you can stockpile that ammunition. it is not going to be the -- any sort of suspension of the constitution. this is just smart, thoughtful community coming togeth

we're getting a better idea who the sandy hook killer was. cbs reporter seth talked to a former classmate and a babysitter who says that adam lanza's mother gave him an odd warning about her son. >> what kind of kid was adam lanza as a classmate? >> just quiet. >> she remembers adam lanza from german class. >> on one side he did something unspeakable. while on the other that's not how i remember him. i remember him as a nice kid that i sat near in class. and we joked. he'd laugh. you know. that kind of thing. >> it was the spring of 2009 and the two were enrolled at western connecticut state university while lanza buzz in high school. >> we were hanging out outside of class and we were like do you want to grab a drink with us. and he said i can't i'm 17. >> he took seven college level courses between 2008 and 2009. he received several a's in computer classes and also one in american history. his over all gpa was 3.26. she remembers meeting adam's mother. >> said he was sick and asked where the classroom was. when we walked in she was getting

but for those who attend sandy hook elementary they are not going to class just yet. hundreds of teachers and staff spent yesterday meet with national experts on children and bereavement and they had meetings with state mental health counselors newtown public schools will open two hours late this morning. >>> as for the sandy hook community when school reopens for those students, they will be relocated at a different building. it's still unclear when school for those kids will resume. 20 children and 6 adults from sandy hook elementary were killed on try. >> and two were killed friday will be laid to rest today. >> the family and friends will say final good-byes to 6-year- old james and 6-year-old jessica. jessica's family is dealing with the pain by talking about their pride and joy. they sat down with amy from abc news for the exclusive. >> reporter: richard and
