here's what we know this morning about what happened at sandy hook elementary school. in about 30 minutes we expect authorities to hold a news conference right where i am and release the identities of the victims. police say 20 children between the ages of 5 and 10 were killed as well as six adults at the school including the principal and psychologist. sources say adam lanza was armed with three guns, two on him, one found in a car nearby. police say he got the guns from his mother who owned them. she was licensed to have them. she was found dead in her home about 2 1/2 miles from where i am now. every new detail helped paint a picture of a horrifying tragedy. cnn's anderson cooper explains how it unfolded moment by moment. >> all units, the individual i have on the phone is continuing to hear what he believes to be gun shots. >> reporter: the first word was chilling. it only got worse. >> they're reporting multiple fatalities involved in this shooting at the elementary school. >> reporter: with each new report, the horror deepened. >> reports say the number of dead c

it is where the students of sandy hook are going to go back to school when it is finally time. threes no date left but the idea is to try to make the transition for some of the shell shocked students less harsh. >> the sandy hook school furniture will be moved down so it will be age and height appropriate. the healing and back to normalcy feeling that will hopefully come from it. >>> as per the latest on the investigation authorities revealed yesterday two surviving adults are recovering from gun shot wounds to their lower extremities. we knew they were recovering from gun shot wounds we didn't know where the wounds from. we know they are somewhere in the lower extremities. they are not only recovering but they are talking to authorities giving them the story helping them piece together what happened inside the elementary school on friday. we are hearing more about the shooter adam lanza and his mother nancy from their friends. >> she has been described as some sort of gun enthusiasts, gun survivalist and things that i have heard. that's not the nancy i know. >> if nancy was wi

he went to sandy hook elementary school. he was in the first, the third the fourth and also the fifth grade. he was six years old when his family moved into this house back in 1998. six years old, the same age as some of these children he cut down in cold blood. we have seen a photo of a t-shirt that the classmates signed his name on the t-shirt and a former classmate said that she used to ride the bus with him to sandy hook elementary school. and the school bus today stopped no more than 50 feet from his home. children, first graders who live in this area, they were getting on to that bus. and there are other students who will never get on that bus. that is the connection. we have confirmed that he in fact attended numerous grades. so even though officials say he had no recent connection, he had a connection to that school. >> there were reports that the shooter was home alone in the days leading up to friday. what do you know about that? >> yeah, well, that's exactly right, anderson, the mother actually left the gunman alo

super storm sandy destroyed the restaurant where she and her three daughters worked. it also wiped out the first floor of their home in breezy point, new york. >> you just want to be back in your home, even if it's not going to be the same. >> reporter: volunteers from she doesn't have money for right now. >> that's a relief. fabulous they're such kind, thoughtful people. >> reporter: the family won't be back in their house this christmas. they don't expect the work to be complete until the spring. they say knowing others volunteered their time to make their christmas a little brighter is the best gift they could have received. they aren't the only ones getting help from operation blessing. in october, sandy caused billions of damage along the east coast and devastated this waterfront community. volunteers have done more than 300 jobs like this one for the people of breezy point. >> this has been an area so devastatingly affected by the storm, and there's so much need. >> reporter: laura kelly and her family came from connecticut saturday to help rebuild. >> if i was

when a storm like sandy approached, it caused severe flooding. in somerset county, the people of crisfield were severely impacted with the loss of their homes, businesses, aquaculture crops ruined and this is a very foldable community, not a chair. 32% live below poverty. they don't have a lot of options. they don't have resources to take care of their needs without assistance from government. i'm very proud of the leadership of our state in trying to help those individuals in the entire team that were ominous. many are familiar with brewster county were maryland is located. 9.8% of worcester county is below poverty and they have twice the number on average of alter the that we have in our state. they were particularly impacted by the storm. thanks to the extraordinary leadership of governor o'malley, our maryland emergency management agency and the full partnership they brought into being, including our state, local officials. we have extraordinary leadership from county executives, maryland national guard. i was with them throughout the storm.
