soledad is live on the scene. soledad? >> reporter: anderson, the gunman's mother is a kindergarten teacher at the school found dead at the family home not far from where i am. ali is covering that part of the story for us. >> reporter: we are on the street where the shooter lived with his mother. there is a lot of activity around here where that police car is. none has anything to do with the residents. many of the residents were asked to leave earlier today while the police made this a crime scene. you can see the yellow tape. the cars and there were a couple of reporters here a moment ago. all media are trying to get to the house down there. the police have closed this off. these are large houses around here and all of them have christmas decorations and it's a quiet neighborhood. no street lights at all. all the lights you see here are from the media. not a lot of neighbors responding and the reporters are trying to get a sense of the family and who they were. we have seen people looking out their windows and there fam

soledad? >> good morning to you, wolf. here's what we know right now. this morning, connecticut's chief medical examiner will be performing autopsies on the gunman, adam lanza and on his mother, as well, who was killed at her home. the results of those autopsies we're expecting to be released at a news conference that will be held later today. also today, president obama will be in newtown. he will speak at a memorial service. before that service, he will meet with members of the victims' families and also with first responders, as well. we know the names were made public last night. 12 girls, 8 boys killed in all. either 6 or 7 years old and 6 adults killed at the school, as well. they were all women. the medical examiner said the primary weapon in the massacre was a semi-automatic rifle that was found at the scene and every victim he examined, which were seven victims, had been hit more than once. one case 1 1 ti1 times. he penetrated the school building by literally shooting his way into th

soledad? >> alison kosik for us. lieutenant vance from the state police described it, alison, as peeling back the layers of the onion. we can see in your report there's still a lot to dig into, maybe some questions they may be able to answer ultimately. thank you for that report. want to get to steven barton. steven was hit by 25 shotgun pellets in his face, his neck, and his chest. happened during the aurora, colorado movie theater shooting back in july. you might remember that 12 people were killed, 58 people wounded on that day. steven currently works as an outreach and policy associate for mayors against illegal guns. he also lives about ten minutes from here. you've had so much interaction with guns in a terrible way from sort of your hometown to what you experienced in aurora, colorado. i want to start by playing a little bit of what the president said in the vigil from last night. listen. >> in the coming weeks, i'll use whatever power this office holds to engage my fellow citizens from law enforcement, to men

i'm don lemon along with soledad o'brien. with within just the past few hours in this investigation, we've learned the names and the ages of the victims in yesterday's shooting here in newtown. six women and 20 students died at sandy hook elementary school. now, that number includes 12 girls and 8 boys. 16 of the kids were only 6 years old. the others had turned 7 in just the last few months. the father of the alleged shooter released a statement tonight. peter lanza says words cannot express his family's heart break. he says his family is in a, quote, state of disbelief. we also learned that president barack obama will be coming here in newtown tomorrow to meet with the familieses of those killed. and soledad, remember just a few months ago, the president having to meet with a family of the victims in colorado and now he's having to do it all over again here in connecticut. >> don, we're getting a little more details about the president's schedule. he'll meet with those families who lost loved ones. then he'll meet with firs

let's go to sol dad. -- soledad. >> it really is. it is almost impossible to fathom what the people of newtown are going through right now and so many lives were lost. so many other people's lives were changed forever. friends and neighbors and even in some cases strangers gathered and continue to gather at this hour to hold each other and cry and to remember. there was a vigil tonight. took place at a local church. jason has been there all day and through the night and he has an update on how that went. jason, the mood has to be so sad. tell me a little bit about tonight's vigil. >> you know, i have seen a lot of emotional things throughout my life. tonight was -- it's really hard to explain. the vigil here tonight, so many people came out here soledad. there wasn't enough room for everyone. they stood outside in the freezing cold. hundreds of people stood in silence and listened. when the vigil led out, all of those standing outside went inside and you heard some singing at one point. groups broke off in to separate groups and star

they are talking, soledad. the staff of both the white house and house republicans are in touch, but speaker boehner said about his sunday conversation with president obama that it was cordial, and then he said about his tuesday conversation with the president that it was deliberate and frank. so you -- it doesn't take too much to read between the lines there to show you that things are not going that well. they have exchanged another set of counteroffers to no avail, and still at this point there is this impasse over tax rates. the white house, president obama saying that the income tax rate for earnings over a quarter million dollars must go up. republicans saying no and accusing the president of not being specific about spending cuts and entitlement reforms, reform medicare, medicaid and social security. >> so let me ask you a question about this report that we're hearing that the obama administration might be looking at a republican to succeed the defense secretary, leon panetta. who is on that list at this

soledad, this is something i've been aware of for a long time. people in the black community told me for many, many years that within the community, there's a struggle over who's black, who's too black, who is not black enough. how does a child like nya deal with this? >> it happens outside the community as well. many people outside the community like to weigh in and say you don't look that way to me. because she's mixed race, she is trying to figure out her identity. you heard her reciting a poem. she feels very confused about her identity. her dad's white, she says i don't know how to be black. i don't know what it means to be black because everybody around me is white. meanwhile, her best friend is a brown girl whose parents are from africa but they are from egypt and so people tell her well, you know, you're not really black. you're african but not really african-american. both these girls are grappling with what it means to be brown skinned and who is really black in america today. >> this is a personal topic for you. it's part of your inter
