abc's amy robach reports. >> reporter: officials say the buses were packed, and attendance was high, as nearly 500 sandy hook students returned to class for the first time. >> most of the kids were excited. seeing friends they haven't seen in awhile. they were anxious to get into the hallways and meet up with the other kids. and you could see the teachers had the same response. >> reporter: but for many parents, it was a difficult, emotional day. we were with erin milgram and her first grader, lauren, as they prepared for school. >> we just try to focus on the happy things. we really have no idea what we're doing. >> reporter: during the shooting, lauren's teacher hid her 15 students in a tiny bathroom. erin was one of many parents who stayed at school with their children. have you thought about next week and what each day may bring? will it get easier? >> i hope so. i hope so. i can't stay with them every day. i know at some point i'm going to have to let them go. >> reporter: and even as students pass daily reminders of what happened in newtown, erin knows they're one step closer t

children and teachers toured today and abc's amy robach explains. amy? >> reporter: it may take some extra time on the school bus tomorrow, but that ride may feel extra special. the streets leading to their new school lined with their school color, green, and signs of love and support. snowflakes hang throughout the newly named building, sent in from around the world with messages of hope. in a matter of weeks, the community has been hard at work retrofitting a building originally designed as a middle school to meet the needs of younger students. bathroom sinks and toilets were lowered and the gym remodeled. and in many classes, students will return to find the desks exactly as they left them. >> a great deal of thought and effort and volunteer work to make this as seamless as possible. at one point there were 80 people in the building cleaning up the building, doing the kinds of things, painting to make it look cheerful and happy. >> reporter: there will be familiar faces, as well. not only will students be reunited with their heroic teachers, sandy hoo

i'm here with amy robach. amy, you spent so much time in newtown since the shooting a month ago. tell us about how this group came together. >> this is a community, the newtown community, that is taking action and finding a way to heal. these children, an amazing group of children right here, most of them from sandy hook elementary school, they found a way to do both, through a song. we want to mention, this song is available on amazon and itunes starting this morning. something everyone can enjoy. >> and they're working with ingrid michaelson, the folk singer. where are the proceeds going to go? >> it's going to go to newtown music academy and united way of western connecticut. this is going to move everyone at home. take a look at how it all came together. at first glance, they're just any group of happy kids. playing outside, when they should be in school. but these are the children of newtown. and only a month after unimaginable tragedy rocked their world, they are eager to help their community. >> so many of the students came. all i could see in their eyes and from what they
