that's the key for boeing. if they have to slow down that process, that's going to be where the investors start to take out their frustration on boeing. >> thanks for that, phil. let me take it one step further. if i'm an airline that has these airplanes on order and i no longer want these airplanes, i put down a deposit. do i get my deposit back? how does it work? >> it's all negotiable, andrew. and that's how it always is in the airline business. for the most part, you're going to get most of that money back if you want to cancel your order. but look at it from this perspective. let's say you are expecting to get airbus -- i mean dream liner number 150. they're right now building number 100 in the factory in everett. do you get out of line for a plane you're supposed to get in a couple of years and then go over to airbus because you're further back in the line there? no. you're pretty much locked into your position where you are. what you're more likely to do is go to boeing and say we've faced delays once ge

if that proves to be the case, boeing may find the fix is straight forward. but if the problem is the lithium battery technology itself, boeing faces a more difficult engineering challenge. >> lithium ion batteries have a lot of power and of course there are many types of batteries out there and hopefully a substitute can be found, but nothing is absolutely set in stone at this point. >> reporter: boeing might be able to design a container to prevent or protect fires caused by the lithium batteries. but if the company is forced to use older, larger batteries, engineers would have to re- design parts of the 787. investigators have reached no conclusions, but they will certainly be taking a hard look at every aspect of the 787's battery. >> i think that the amount of problems there have been with lithium batteries historically would have to lead one to believe that you're not going to certificating an airplane, you're not going to just say this was a bad batch, bring on the next batch until somebody figures out that it was a bad batch and why it was a bad batch

boeing's 787 dreamliner is grounded. what's next for that stock, and will airline stocks run into turbulence? > > looking at boeing, we have had a decent pull-back here, and i think you can use this as an opportunity. i am looking to sell some cash-secured puts to get in at a lower level. overall, that stock has been trading between $70 and $76 essentially for the year, so it still has a lot more upside potential. > > obviously i am going to take the reverse side and say, where there's smoke, there's fire, or maybe where there's fire, there's actually smoke. i think boeing is headed lower. it did have a nice reversal yesterday. it came out the $72.60 level, which is the 100- and the 150-day moving average. it tested that 50-day moving average at $74.03, where i thought it actually would get a little bit of selling pressure, bounce up above $75. however, they do have earnings coming out in january. i actually bought some puts yesterday, some feb. $72.50 puts, so i'm going to buy the feb. $72.50 puts, and we're going to se

down 247, 3% at boeing at 73.70. this plane from the production problems now to the flight usage issues, it feels like a snake bit aircraft. as you say, the public perception is one thing. i wonder if any airlines quietly, quietly are expressing concerns either to you or back channels to boeing about this aircraft. >> yes. they are expressing their concerns. have they picked up the phone since yesterday and picked up the phone and called jim, probably not. i suspect what we're hearing from the airlines and what they are telling boeing is the same thing they have been telling boeing over the last several years. a, are you going to deliver this aircraft on time. b, is it going to meet expectations. if that happens, again, for the most part, most of the airlines flying this aircraft are reporting that it is delivering on the expectations that they had set in advance when they ordered the aircraft. i know that's a little strange. some people will look at this and say, listen, there's all these problems with the dreamline

and boeing engineers -- by the way, boeing engineers, this is a willing participation by boeing. it's not as though they're calling boeing into the office. boeing is saying yeah, let's sit down and look at this issue together. as you take a look at shares of the boeing, one thing to keep in mind, this review is likely to take several weeks. so we see the headline risk that's likely to be there for boeing. the press conference happening later this morning may just be the latest mark is what we're going to see over the next several weeks where the dreamliner is going to be back in the news on a fairly steady basis. you have to wonder what kind of an impact that's going to have on shares of boeing. >> did al nippon take more deliveries than any other airline? >> they were the launch customer. so yes, so far they have more than others. i don't think that they have the most orders. i'd go to have back and check this. but you know, it's a gradual process, where -- >> saying al nippon every day. that's the thing. so that's where -- right? >> you love saying al nippon. >> no, i don't min

>> boeing believes it is, brian. we have been talking with people close to what is happening with boeing. they are telling me they are looking at the possibility after solution. a test to deal with all of the lithium ion batteries. so they can say, we can guarantee these batteries are functioning the way they should function, and if there a failure, it is something that won't lead it fire on a plane. the faa signing off on that kind of a solution, that's what they are looking at as they look at the batteries of the real reason of the problems the last couple of weeks. we talk about the problem with boeing, see how many dreamliners by what boeing calls customers, technically 89% of them are airlines. there are a few individuals part of the group. that total of 57 customers ordering 798 dream liners, that still need to be filled, they have delivered 50 dream liners. the backlog extends through the end of the decade. if you want it order one, you're not getting it until 2019, 2020. boeing is not changing its production

dagen: the faa joining companies around the world and grounding boeing 7873 liner -- boeing 787 dream liner. jeff: the plane came in from warsaw, it did not the part. it is still on the ground. just one of the planes has been grounded both here, in the u.s., europe, asia, as well as, in the middle east. here is what we know at this point. it is the first time the faa has grounded and aircraft since a historic flight. chicago. american airlines flight 189. it crashed on takeoff. it turned out that the engine fell off that aircraft and went into a barrel roll and crash. thus far, obviously, though boeing dreamliner has been able to avoid any kind of crash or serious problem. the problem is, those lithium ion batteries. there are problems with lithium ion batteries in new vehicles. working the kinks out of it is something they need to do, but that is something they have successfully been able to do in the auto industry. they believe boeing will be able to get it eventually right also. dagen: jeff, thank you for that reporting. jeff flock in what looks like a very cold chicago. raising th

where else should we be pointing fingers if not at boeing? >> i don't know the answer to that question. i would say the electrical system as a whole, we had that issue during test flights in november of 2010, it was grounded in texas. they had to look at that. who knows if that's where this is going. the onus is on boeing, the ntsb and faa to get this plane back up. when we didn't have this grounding, it was going to be fly until something happens. now we have sort of stopped this and who knows how long this will take. as ray lahood was saying, we have to be 1,000% sure. i'm not sure that's possible. you have to be 1,000% sure before this is okay. the onus is on testing trying to find a root cause and make sure we know what's going on. >> go over everything with a fine tooth comb. thank you very much neil and phil. >>> still ahead, why honey boo boo is celebrating a big change to atms. >>> and phil mickelson is mad as hell and he won't take it anymore. he says uncle sam is threatening to take 60% of his money. ♪ [ male announcer ] how do yo

faa is out in full force as well as boeing. listen to what the faa said this morning about the safety of the 787. >> now, from day one, we have worked with boeing to certify the systems and further ensure this innovative aircraft meets the high level of safety for the flying public. we believe this is a safe aircraft. >> all right. he's the other issue. you know, basically, boeing says, look, there have been no more problems than similar to what we had introducing the 777 in the mid-90s, and so why the action in the stock of both sides of the aisle and even the transportation secretary said it's safe. reached out to 17 analysts, and getting feed back from wall street. they don't like the fire issue or the lithium battery issue. fire's scary. the lithium battery creates fires in mobile phones and laptop computers, and but listen to what steven is telling fox business about this issue, though. here's what he says, "we do think a fix is a available" just swap out the battery, a heavier battery rather than the talk about the boeing

how do you consider boeing as an investment? i guess the first thing is that this plane is the future. there are going to be thousands of them. it's never going to be a supply issue. these planes are going to go in the air. there are 50 around at the moment. i guess the question an equity investor has to ask is, does it push back slightly the cash flows that are going to accrue to boeing? boeing's roughly at $76. it's been roughly at that level for 12 months now. i think at this stage you can say that the answer is no. so if there are going to be any falls in the stock, you have on this consider it a buying opportunity. >> no one delayed orders. so far no one's got dream liners saying anything else -- >> no, there are 900 orders, there will be thousands sold eventually. we spoke to a couple of engineers last year -- sorry, last week when this first happened. and they said, you know, like you said on your program, this is really no different to the glitches that have occurred with the 7 and other introductions -- the 777 and othe

we'll have more on boeing's share price coming up in a moment. let's get started with tonight's "market focus." >> tom: for the third session in a row it was a mixed finish for the major indices, as they continue trading in very narrow ranges. the s&p 500 illustrates the lack of conviction by both buyers and sellers. the index hit its low for the session in the first 15 minutes, but those losses were cut as we saw the strong industrial production data. the index wavered in the final hour to end higher by a fraction. volume on the big board was 597 million shares. almost 1.7 billion traded on the nasdaq. again we saw the telecom sector weigh on the market, falling 1.2%. but the technology sector rebounded some from its recent selling pressure to end higher by 0.7% today. boeing was back in focus with more problems for its dreamliner 787. a plane flown by all nippon airways in japan may an emergency landing after alarms were set off indicating smoke. the plane landed safely but three passengers had minor injuries from using evacuation slides. both

with shares of boeing suffered because of this and they are down again today. there is a news conference right now, the treasury secretary lahood and f.a.a. administrators involved in this and they saying the boeing 787 dreamliner is safe and they are doing a complete investigation to find out how the accidents have happened. shares of wells fargo are getting attention, the largest home lender posting a 24 percent jump in quarterly earnings as they boffed -- boosted lending. the nasdaq is higher but not much movement in other direction and the silicon valley index this morning trade down. if you are unemployed you may want to move out of plate. a study shows california is the third worst state in the nation to be employed in when it comes to unemployment benefits, with the rate and wealth distribution. connecticut is the worst. followed by washington, dc. a new deal on iphones starting today, adding the iphone four and iphone five with no contract and unlimited plan and it does include text and data and is available through walmart but this is a catch, you stil

looking at the problems and boeing's response. >> the boeing 787 has been dubbed a plane of the future. a complex future made of carbon fiber and lighter and more fuel efficient. it came out to great fanfare in 2012 but tonight problems has boeing scrambling to do damage control. japan airlines reported one of their 787s in tokyo leaked 25 gallons of fuel from a valve. the plane which has been grounded was being inspected after spilling fuel on boston runway. the same week, they battled a blaze on another 787. otherwise, they chalk these up to teething problems. >> there is no question they would ground it if there was anything seriously wrong with 78 7. >> on friday, the federal aviation administration announced comprehensive review of the plane, but officials didn't waiver in their support. >> we are confident about the safety of this aircraft. we're concerned about these distinction and conduct a review until we are completely satisfied. >> boeing says the plane is important for the future of aviation and will have a huge impact on american jobs. once these things are working worked
