tomasky and political reporter for politico michael izenstadt who has a great piece. why can't the federal government balance it's budget when several states have found ways to accomplish that feat. >> well, john, you know very well. tax revenues go up when you increase tax rates. that's mcconnell math. we can't have that kind of balanced approach here in washington. it can't be done because republicans won't go for tax increases. they did have to go with $600 billion here and any conservative watching this show, obama got all those tax increases. well it's worth remembering that before that $600 billion, he agreed in $1.5 trillion in spending cuts while he has been president. $917 billion in the previous debt limit deal and another $500 billion in other circumstances. so there still has been in our circumstance here in washington in the obama time a lot more cutting than revenue raising. >> john: alex, let in go over to you. why can't we get a deal done on the deficit? is it that republicans refuse to raise taxes or is there more to it. >> you look at every fight whe

joining me now is michael tomaski. his latest article is titled "the gop plan to steal elections." quite a headline, michael. let's start with our nbc first read team says governor mcdonnell and ken kuchinelly, they've come out against it. does this mean it's dead? >> it may mean in virginia it's dead, thomas. also i notice a republican state senator in virginia also came out against it. they would need the vote of every state senator. although a bill is being introduced this week as i understand. so it's being pushed through. you know, it's going to be very hard for them to pull this off politically but they're going to try. >> what about scott walker? we heard him saying there he's not committal about this but it might be of interest. >> walker in michigan. also snyder used the word "interesting." decoded the word "interesting" means, well, we'll love to be able to get away with this scam. i'm not sure we can. i'm not going to endorse it until we think our odds are better. >> meanwhile the gop is looking for a way out of the wilderness so to speak. congressman paul ryan had some

tomasky, jonathan krieg landed and others were talking about the problems that whoever the new president would be was likely to face. and anticipating an obama win that night, there was some prescience about the use of the filibuster to block consideration of things. said tonight we will get some historic perspective. i have had the good fortune to read a lot of kevin mattson's books and he is a wonderful historian of post-war liberalism. he tells it in ways that are very perceptive. he avoids fashionable trends to make sure he gets underneath things, so he is not a revisionist. and he writes about other periods as well, including participatory democracy and the progressive era, and upton sinclair. i am sure many of you have read the jungle and we are all too young to remember, and poverty in california his gubernatorial campaign but kevin, kevin provides a rich, rich history of 20th century american history in the context of our larger scheme of things. so let's welcome kevin mattson and "just plain dick."
