i'm michelle griego. >> good morning, i'm frank mallicoat. 5:30 is your time. repair work begins on the bay bridge fender that was damaged in the tanker accident. >> the fix isn't cheap. elissa harrington is in our newsroom to tell us about the work ahead. >> good morning. repairs will cost around $2 million to $3 million, caltrans starts today repairing a damaged section of the fender system. the structure of the bridge itself was not damaged, it was just two weeks ago on the morning of january 7 that a large oil tanker struck the easternmost tower on the western span. the 752-foot vessel did not leak oil and nobody was hurt. now the metropolitan transportation commission wants ost ship management, the owner of the ship, to help pay for repairs. there's also money in reserves. investigators are looking into what caused the collision. repairs are beginning today, and will be completed in may. elissa harrington, cbs 5. >>> developing news in oakland, one man in custody, police are looking for two other suspects, after a shooting that wounded an undercover police

michelle griego is off. >> hi, everyone. i'm frank mallicoat. it is 6:30. this morning san jose police are looking for several suspects in a deadly stabbing. >> it is the city's third homicide of the year and cbs 5 reporter elissa harrington live at the police department with more on this crime. >> reporter: the third homicide of the year but the second within two days. police don't know motives for either of these and have made no arrests. the latest victim a man in his 30s. he was stabbed to death last night. police were called just before 8:30. they say that the victim was outside an apartment complex off monterey highway in the kenwood neighborhood when a group of men attacked him stabbing him repeatedly. the victim was taken to the hospital where he later died. this violence came just one day after a woman was shot and killed in her condo near tully road. 43-year-old woman leaves behind two children. police haven't made any arrests in the murders. as for last night they are searching for four suspects who ran from the scene. >> it's very vague at this

i'm michelle griego. >> hi, everyone. i'm frank mallicoat. it is 5:30. >>> at least two people are dead after a helicopter crashed into a crane this morning in england. >> as rita nissan reports, it happened in crowded central london during this morning's commute. >>> reporter: the wreckage from a helicopter crash created a line of flames down a london street. authorities say two people were killed when the commercial helicopter hit a construction crane on top of a 50-story building. >> see the helicopter come over hit the top of the jib of the crane, the helicopter come crashing down, the cab come crashing down on the road. >> reporter: authorities say the pilot and a person on the ground died when the chopper went down. police shut down nearby city streets during the morning rush hour. the crash site is in the heart of london near a major train station and the british spy agency mi-6. witnesses say they saw the chopper flying fast up the river before it smashed into the crane, spinning out of control. >> it's like something out of a movie.

i'm frank mallicoat. >> i'm michelle griego. time now 5:58. >>> somebody saw it coming just before a tanker scraped a tower on the bay bridge. cbs 5 reporter anne makovec over at treasure island reporting the pilot got a warning a little too late. >> reporter: good morning. yeah, that coast guard just confirmed that its vessel traffic service sent that warning to the pilot just moments before the vessel that you can see there behind me scraped the bay bridge on monday morning. that ship is called the overseas reymar. and it's been anchored off treasure island since monday. it turns out the man who was at the helm had had a few accidents in the past, as well. captain guy kleess was involved in three previous scrapes all of them minor. back in august 2009 his ship was briefly grounded in the sacramento river two days later damaged a dock at the port of stockton. and then in may of 2010, he was supervising a trainee on a tugboat that hit bottom in richmond's harbor. the investigation into what happened here is still under way. >> w

. >> i'm michelle griego. time now 6:01. >>> this morning the coast guard is trying to figure out what happened on san francisco bay. cbs 5 reporter cate caugiran is on treasure island with some new information about the man in control of the ship that hit the bay bridge yesterday morning. >> reporter: good morning. that pilot is in the hot seat today as that tanker you can see behind me is staying put as the coast guard continues its investigation. this morning that pilot will be face to face with investigators pending the results of a drug test. that tanker was on the way to sea when did hit a fender at the bridge around 6:30 yesterday afternoon. visibility as a quarter mile with fog. no signs of a spill, everybody was safe. caltrans engineers responded but found no significant damage to the bay bridge. >> this is just a scrape to the bridge. >> reporter: the fender acted like a bumper and caltrans says they will replace 40 feet of it but the question is, how did this happen in the first place? coast guard w
