. >>> ktvu's patti lee is live with the trouble she found on bay area roadways. patti? >> reporter: you can see that the rains are light. but in the past half hour, in a span of just 10 minutes, bay area chp has responded to 11 separate traffic collisions. between noon and 3 p.m. today, chp responded to 31 incidents in the bay area. the problems picked up with the rain. around 1 p.m., two vehicles flipped in sonoma county, within a half hour of each other. one driver managed to walk away. the other had to be taken to the hospital. >> but it is still the first rainfall of the year, so it's been a couple of weeks. there is a possibility there's some accumulation of oil and radiator fluid, things like that that might be on the road that could contribute to slicker conditions. >> reporter: traffic backed up long before rush hour because of the rain. in one spot it seemed to clear, but only because a car had stalled on interstate 80 heading east towards the bay bridge. >> a lot of people will slow down in heavy downpour but they won't in light rain, but it is just as dangero

patty lee, ktvu channel 2 news. >>> looking at patty's hive shot, those waves were -- live shot, those waves were tiny out there, but things will change rapidly heading into the weekend. right now half moon bay buoy reporting 3 feet, but there is a major swell in the pacific. closer to home we have wave heights of about 5 feet. look what happens well offshore, waves approaching 19 to 20 feet and the big waves approaching the bay area especially into sunday. high surf advisories begin at 10 a.m. tomorrow until 4:00 sunday afternoon with that northwest swell on the way. you can see those waves on the increase for saturday and sunday. just be extra careful. a lot of people are heading to the coast this weekend. the weather will be nice. the beaches will be very dangerous. as far as mavericks, the energy is focused to pillar point and the waves are amplified easily topping 30 feet heading into sunday. you want a mixture of the perfect conditions, light winds out of the northwest 8 miles per hour, dropping tide throughout the morning, a low tide by 12:28 in the afternoon and nice continues

in san francisco, patti lee, ktvu channel 2 news. >>> and meteorologist mark tamayo joins us to tell us about the high-surf advisory and even bigger waves are expectedder to. >> that is right, heather. a lot of people heading into the coast. here is a look at buoy reports. they have been on the rise, 6- 9' and as we expand the view, you will notice this, with the brier color these indicate the increasing swells out here in the pacific. in fact, i will just take a look at this. you can see waves around 9'. look at what happens way to the west. that bigger surf is approaching the bay area shoreline for tomorrow and as a result high- surf advisory remains in place until 4:00 sunday afternoon with that building swell into basically started to bold a little last night, but really today and also into sunday. so just be extra careful if you are visiting the bay area shoreline tomorrow and into monday. also perfect timing for the maverick surf contest. the energy is focused and as a result the wave are amplified. as far as the weather conditions for tomorrow it's going to be another nice one

patty lee, ktvu channel 2 news. >> within the last hour u.s. coast guard crews say they found a body of a man swept out to sea. a husband and wife were caught bey a strong wave while walking their dog. the coast guard says the woman was only in the water for a few minutes, then made it out what. we're showing you is video posted bey the marin county fire department. a helicopter and two lifeboats eventually located the body of the 59-year-old man. he had tbin water several hours. >>> a man from mill valley is recovering tonight after spending a harrowing evening on mount tabelpaius. a few hours later he called 911 saying that he was near a creek, injured, and disoriented. responders lost contact with him sometime last evening and sent out more than 65 searchers to look for him. they finally found him early this morning. >> we had temperatures reported up on the mountain in the upper 30s. some places maybe even freezing. so very fortunate that aim told that he's in good and fair condition. >> heavy terrain hampered the rescue so crews ended up c

ktvu's patty lee is live along the coast where excitement is building about as fast as those waves. >> reporter: there's a tangible feeling of excitement in this surfing town which has waited years for this contest to return. surfers are having a tough time finding any waves to catch, but that is about to change. ocean rafts, jet skis and photographers pulled into pillar point to get ready for sun's competition. >> if you're dealing -- sunday's competition. >> if you're dealing with boats and jet skis, it definitely takes a few days to gear up. >> reporter: jeff coska is making sure rescue crews are ready to prepare for the worst. time is running out, but no one seems to mind. >> this swell has hit hawaii. that means it's on its way here. >> reporter: 24 of the world's best surfers are also en route to half moon bay many flying in from hawaii captain robert brown arrived this afternoon to set up his camera boat used to film much of the movie chasing mavericks. his job this time? live stream the competition on the web. >> you don't have to go can see it from here. >> reporter: the san

patti lee, ktvu channel 2 news. >>> we now go to mark toe my yay for the high wind advisory. >> our -- our buoy reports shore, you can see them around 7 to 9 feet but the surf is picking up offshore. this is a big area of high surf. waves around 14. we'll take another look here approaching 19 feet. this is all approaching the bay area shoreline for tonight and also into monday and sunday morning. that's why we have the high surf advisory in place. so high surf advisory in plate right now it started at 10:00 a.m. lasted until 4:00 sunday afternoon. there is the chance this could be extended into parts of monday because some sizable waves are expected. now, as far as mavericks, that's the big headline for the big surf contest beginning tomorrow morning at 8:00. the waves get amplified and the waves topping easily 30 feet as we head into sunday. coming up we'll take a look at the weather conditions for mavericks and a nice forecast we're talking about here back on shore. >>> along the san mateo county coast, organizers and surf fans are excited for the invitational. 24 athletes will take

patti lee, ktvu channel 2 news. >>> and here's a quick look now outside. this is from our traffic camera along 880 in oakland. traffic is moving a little slowly tonight but it is indeed moving. moving to the south, this is the 280 interchange in san jose. it looks like traffic is pretty light there. bill martin has been tracking this latest system for us, and bill, you said this rain may linger on into the evening? >> it's going to linger, heather. like we were talking about earlier, it hasn't rained in a few weeks and the roads get a little wet. this is not a big storm, but the roads get very slick. it draws the residues to the surface and you get slick roadways. the heaviest rain has been in the north bay. there's santa rosa right now. you can see the darker greens? obviously, that's the heavier rain, just north of napa. but basically the heavier rains are widely spread. we're seeing light, scattered sprinkles throughout the area. it's sort of the same light green. you just saw patti up there by berkeley. this is a light, low-grade rainfall that's going
