ktvu tara moriarty is in oakland. she has all the di tails of who is -- details of who is being targeted. >> reporter: this is one of the riskiest raids that oakland police had this morning. this is the home that they were targeting. and you can see the shades are now drawn and officers are inside. they are conducting a search and talking to people there. we're in the max well park neighborhood off of interstate 580 just before 5:00 this morning swat teams moved into the home on the 3100 block of month sell low avenue. this is one of a half a dozen raids that are taking place this morning. this particular operation was dangerous because officers are dealing with alleged gang members. they are looking for drugs, guns, that sort of thing. when we arrived the police helicopter was overhead. we saw tactical units and ambulances on stand by. neighbors reported to us they heard a loud boom. we're not sure if that was a door being kicked in or flash grenades were deplayed. around 5:45 most of the units were pulled out. oakla

tara moriarty tells us about the many questions that surround the tragic crash. tara. >> reporter: the chp doesn't know exactly what caused the crash. we do know it happened here near the foster city boulevard exit. it created quite a traffic jam last night. we're standing several yards away from the actual scene of the accident. but when we drove by earlier, we could see there was still a down power pole. this happened last night shortly before 10:00. investigators shut down two lanes of eastbound 92 and three hours after the driver of what looks like a silver car slammed into the guardrail. the car knocked over a utility pole and a box. the vehicle was virtually unrecognizable after the crash. five people were inside. two people were pronounced dead at the scene. >> it appears the vehicle was traveling in the number three lane. it lost control of the vehicle. and over turned when it hit the rail. >> reporter: now one person did receive minor injuries and another person walked away unharmed. it is not known how many of the victims were actually wearing seat belt

let's go to tara moriarty who is there on the scene with more details. good morning, tara. >> reporter: it's a little hard to hear you out here because it's so noisy. we're on the university avenue overpass. i don't know if you can see where the flashing lights are. that is the westbound direction. on the other side is where the accident happened it looks like all lanes are clear. but if we take a look at the video we shot a couple minutes ago you can see there is a charcoal gray colored car. it hit the center divider. the car spun out right near the ash by avenue exit and another car came along and broadsided it. two more cars were involved in the crash. four cars total. we understand the driver of the initial car is a male driver. he was transported to a nearby hospital. we don't know the extent of his injuries. if you look at the video you can tell he got hit pretty badly there. initially the chp issued a sig alert. three lanes of track were blocked off. it looks like just as of a couple minutes ago all the lanes are back open. so a commuter should be

. >>> an early morning apartment fire, we are learning more about how it started and tara moriarty is there at the scene in haze valley with the neighborhood with more on what investigators are saying, tara? >> reporter: initially we reported this was a christmas tree fire but that was not the case. it is sort of a busy road and you can see all of the rubble that is stacked up in front of the apartment building and the damage that is between those two buildings arson investigators are not sure what sparked this fire but officials believe whatever it was, was in a blue bin between two buildings. fire broke out and the fire walls coming from between the two buildings and they did act quickly. >> when we hit it, it was knocked down right away. >> reporter: the good news was that nobody was hurt and one of these buildings is actually empty so there was nobody inside and there was only one resident inside the other building. everybody got out okay and it looks as if the damage is pretty super special. we will check with arson investigators and check it and one is a law office building so t

ktvu's tara moriarty is in oakland and says that meeting at many points got out of hand. tara? >> reporter: well, chief jordan wants to hire an outside consultant, bill bratton, in order to help downing kraing on crime. but many tax ticks that braten is used for -- tactics that bratton is used for were voiced at the city council meeting. [inaudible] >> i say it's time we prosecute the police police -- the police -- [ applause ] >> reporter: the new plan includes hiring brat on -- bratton for $250,000. >> i would say the oakland police department's track record of brutality in murder in my eyes and oakland residents does not deem them fit to create a plan of violence -- rear duesing -- reducing. >> if you really want to hear what he has to say, why don't you buy his book on am ma zahn? [laughter] >> we have an obligation to treat people with dignity and respect and they have an obligation to treat the police with dignity and respect. it works both ways. >> reporter: the plan includes more funding for the police academy to train more officers, hiring 20 police service technicians

moriarty tells us all four victims are teens, tara? >> reporter: a next door neighbor said there are two middle school aged boys that are always playing soccer out in the yard and they have never given her any problems so she is shocked by a driveby shooting which happened and you can see the bullet holes, it happened last night at 6:00 and investigators say somebody shot four people ranging in age from 13 to 16 and they were all seriously wounded but are expected to survive. they were struck by bullets by a passing car with three to four males inside. neighbors cannot believe it. >> that neighborhood is very quiet, i live in this house a couple of years lard and i don't have any problems. that is the first time i see that in years. >> reporter: now the getaway car is described as a late model four-door sedan and right now detectives have no motive and they are not saying if the shooting was gang related. we will try to check in with the family so see if they have any idea why they would be targeted. live in brentwood, ktvu channel 2 m

tara moriarty joins us from the mission district with details on how it happened and why criminal charges could be filed. tara in. >> reporter: the owner of this art gallery could be in trouble for setting some artwork on fire and we should say the artwork is made out of matches, 2 5,000 to be exact. it was a map of the united states and by lighting it, it caused a lot of damage to this building. last night fire crews were called out when smoke and flames were shooting out from the building. the artist creates maps and some -- sometimes messages out of exhibits. the problem with last night's incident is that it posed a safety hazard, which caused $5,000 at least worth of damage to the ceiling annuals. now investigators were called in and while the gallery owner did not necessarily mean any harm and nobody got hurt, he could face reckless charges of arson. ktvu channel 2 morning news. >>> happening right now, secretary of state hillary rodham clinton is making her first appearance looking into the attack on the u.s. consulate in benghazi. secretary of state hillary rodham clinton is there

live from san quentin state prison, i'm tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, tara. >>> 7:31. new developments in the case now of the woman set on fire in san francisco. police have arrested the suspect. her boyfriend. police say dexter oliver was arrested at an oakland motel around 9:00 last night. he's now in jail on attempted murder an arson charges. police say oliver doused his 25- year-old girlfriend with gasoline and lit her on fire on sunday afternoon after the couple got into an argument outside of a laundromat. the victim, starr lamare, is at st. francis hospital with critical injuries. >>> oakland police are searching for suspects in a drive-by shooting that injured a taco truck employee. this happened about 8:30 last night on 23rd near foothill boulevard. gunfire from an assault weapon came through the truck, hit this teenager in the foot. police say the suspects were actually shooting at another car that crashed, trying to get pay way. no one else -- to get away. no one else was hurt. >>> police say a teenager was shot on heggenberger road and hamilton around 1

tara moriarty is in san jose with the reason police waited nearly a week to tell the public about this case. >> reporter: we just spoke to a neighbor who said they may have a tip regarding the suspect. first we want to paint a picture of what happened last friday. the little girl was walking along the sidewalk and hid behind that wooden fence. he dragged her 15 feet down the driveway and neighbors heard the screams here in the little portugal neighborhood. it is off east st. james and at 6:00 a.m. she was walking to friends house and their mom was supposed to drive them to the bus stop. she called to report a man was following her and she wiggled free and ran to safety. we spoke to a neighbor and she said she has seen a suspicious looking man in the neighborhood for years. >> if it is who i think it is, he lives in the neighborhood and not on this street but he lives here. he has always been kind of odd, walking around at different times of the day. >>> if i know where he is, stay out of our neighborhood because if i get him before police does, it will not be funny. >> reporter: police

ktvu channel 2 morning news' tara moriarty is at st. vincent high school with more about why the police are now getting involved and why some may have known about this hazing before it was reported, tara? >> reporter: police say they have only learned about this incident since last thursday and they will be interviewing officials at the high school to get a better idea of what happened and to figure out if anybody else is to blame. they could even decide to push for charges against the five students last week. the allegations involved attacks on six students and friday, marry ellen ryan fired chris five weeks after he reported the allegations to her. he is a former new york police officer who played college football and started as a coach and teacher who started here last august. some freshman football players admitted it to him in the locker room and varsity players had removed their clothing and held them as the other players assaulted them. they are asking why an assistant coach who also reportedly knew the allegations and did nothin

tara moriarty has more. >> reporter: it's starting to get warm. the sun is coming up it's very calm in the harbor. you can see this big sort of hill with the golf bag looking thing on top of it. that's pillar point is where the mavericks competition takes place. some sunday there will be no access to the beach or bluff to watch the surfers. it is simply too dangerous. the national weather service is warning of possible sneaker waves and lasting through late tomorrow morning. tragedy struck this new year's day, when a 59-year-old man was swept out to sea. then two days after christmas a man and his 9-year-old son were swept off the rocks while fishing in the marin hedlunds. you may remember this video from 2010, unexpected waves came onshore and swept passengers. sudden waves can strike with a force to knock people unconscious. they are pushed back in the ocean, sometimes pushed on the rocks before they can swim back. so a sneaker wave warning on the sonoma coastline. officials have issued a high surf advisory from sonoma county to monterey county.

i never thought this was going to happen to me. >> reporter: in brentwood, tara moriarty. >>> the san francisco medical examiner released the name of a pedestrian that was hit by two cars. police say 44-year-old melissa kitson of san lorenzo was crossing the street when she was hit. she worked as an accountant at the near by marketing firm called red bricks. both drivers remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. >>> investigators are calling an early morning fire at a fremont furniture store suspicious. the fire broke out just before 2:00 this morning at the factory furniture outlet. investigators say they found a device that may have started the fire right in the middle of showroom floor. the fire was quickly put out and no one was hurt. flames, smoke and water damaged the furniture in the showroom. investigators have not yet released any information about an arsonist or motive. >>> microsoft announced today that it will release the professional version of its surface tablet on february 9. the surface prois similar to the original surface rt tablet that came out last o

tara moriarty is live with more details on just how much damage was done. >> reporter: yeah, setting fire to artwork. this is part of an interactive display. you can see behind me here it could land the owner in trouble. this is a map of the united states and now it's all burned. the artwork was made out of matches. 25,000 of them and by lighting it, it caused this damage. last night around midnight, fire crews were called out here when smoke and flames could be seen inside the building. right now we'll see you -- show you some youtube video. clair fontaine is a paris-based artist who creates maps and sometimes militant messages out of matches. the problem, it posed a safety hazard. it happened next to a nail salon in the mission district. the gallery's website says it is dedicated to presenting audio, visual and performance- based projects. this would call into the category. fire official says it caused $5,000 worth of damage to the building and walls. arson investigators were called in. while the gallery didn't mean any arm, he could face charges of reckless arson. this case will b

ktvu's tara moriarty just spoke to a relative of one of these young victims. tara? >> reporter: yeah. we just spoke to the sister of one of the victims. she said her brother and cousins were standing out here on the sidewalk. they were waiting for their aunt to arrive to pick them up. when a car pull the boys drove by, words were exchanged, they kept going, did a u-turn, came back, the group started fighting. she said her brother tried not to say anything and then all of a sudden, they opened fire. you can actually see where there's still two bullet holes. one is above the garage, the other is near the tree. now, the sister says that the family is understandably scared because this happened last night around 6:00 off grandville. investigators say this shooting left four young people ranging in age from 14 to 16 seriously wounded. we also understand there was another person in the group but they were not hurt. luckily, all of these boys were expected to survive. they were struck by bullets from a passing car with about three to four males inside. we spoke to the next

ktvu's tara moriarty is in oakland this morning. she tells us the surge in violence has one city leader calling for a state of emergency. good morning, tara. >> reporter: good morning. the spike in violence did lead to a conference call early saturday morning between the police chief and the mayor. and now the vice mayor is calling for a state of emergency. larry reid says that he thinks that the city has basically gone out of control and he believes mutual aid funds from the state would definitely help the situation. now, the most recent shooting actually happened last night at a birthday party. people scattered and ran to neighbors' houses after someone entered the party and started shooting. >> the victims went inside the house seeking refuge if the person shooting at them. officers found five victims suffering from gunshot wounds, all nonlife threatening. >> reporter: police don't know if last night's shooting as well as others on saturday and sunday that left a total of 11 people wounded are connected to friday's mayhem. friday

[ inaudible ] >> reporter: angry protestors repeatedly heckled chief howard jordon and other supporters of the controversial crime fighting plan. it includes hiring former l.a. police chief bill bratton as a consultant for $250,000. he has been credited with turning around the departments in new york and los angeles. but some community members here says his tactics like stop and frisk encourage racial profiling. >> it is being really questioned in new york. mayor lee has to withdraw it in san francisco. you shouldn't even have it in your vocabulary. ktvu tara moriarty is at the scene of police activity. it's happening in oakland. what is going on out there? >> reporter: we're not going to say exactly where we are. this operation is still under way. oakland police are doing a raid on this block you see behind me. there are emergency personnel out here. this is one of many raids going on this morning. we are told this operation one of the riskiest. these are alleged gang members and that weapons, drugs that sort of thing is being confiscated right now. the helicopter has been above us since before 5:00 this morning. that is when swat teams moved in and told the people inside of this home to get out. neighbors did report hearing a loud boom. we are not sure if that is a door being kicked in or flash grenades were being used. there is a tactical unit at the top of the street along with an ambulance. oakland police remaining tight lipped who these people are. once the raid is over and the evidence has been seized we'll be learning more about this operation. this is one of the biggest raids happening in the city of
