a retired fbi agent joins us. tell me, jeff, when you look at this video, the pictures, they're pretty clear, aren't they? >> yeah, they're very clear for this type of case. very surprisingly, they got pictures. they worked hard to get those. they pheced the two people, two suspects, together over the course of the last 24 hours. that's a really good development. really positive they're so clear as well. >> greta: that's the good development. the bad development is the time. we've had about 79 hours and change now since the bombs went off, an awful longtime to get away. even if you got in a car, you could drive to l.a. in 43 hours. that's the bad news. people shouldn't just look in the massachusetts area. they should be looking around the world for him, right? >> yeah, that's right. the fbi and police are not sitting around waiting for calls to come in. they're taking calls. the minute that press conference took place today, those pictures were made public officially from the fbi, they were getting dozens of calls

the fbi released images of two men. we're going to show them to you again in the video that we have. it is riveting. basically one is walking not far behind the other. both have backpacks, walking together, not far behind the finish line of the boston marathon. authorities say suspect number two, that's the one in the white hat you see, was -- left a bag containing explosives at the site of the second blast. congressman mike mccall, joins me again tonight. sir, thank you very much. we appreciate you're taking the time. what is your understanding of how authorities came to identify here two men. you were in the room during the press conference. he stribz sort of a palpable pause and a shock when people understood that there were two people involved. >> precisely. i think as you and i talked over the last several evenings, this videotape and the explosive forensics are really the key to this case. and now the videotape has come out. i want to first of all, commend the fbi joint terrorism task force, boston police departme

the fbi is still trying to pin down their exact names. the reason i say exact is because they've been looking through a lot of names, potential aliases and other things, and it's been a little confusing. and until we have the names pulled together, we won't know exactly where these guys are from or what their background might be. there are some indications -- and i just want to say we have to be a little careful here. there are some indications in the evidence that they've uncovered, and i'm not sure where it is that these guys may have foreign connections and they might have come to this country relatively recently. but that's not been confirmed. it's another one of the factors that will go a long way toward telling us whether or not this was a home grown plot of some sort, whether it was an international plot of some sort, or whether, more likely, frankly, it's some kind of hybrid, that it has tentacles in all places. this is a big development nevertheless because when the fbi kind of made that reluctant decision to go forward and put t

>> i would refer you to the fbi. >> so at this point there's nothing you can say to the public to reassure them? >> well, i can tell you in line as you know for a long time now there have been long established procedures and protocols. any time a suspicious powder is located in a mail facility, it is tested. and i would underscore that the mail is screened, the mail sent here is screened and that these tests are undertaken at remote sites to mitigate the risk both to those recipients and to the general population. the fbi has the lead for determining whether a suspicious powder is a dangerous substance such as ricin. and those take place at a credited facility. and they take a certain amount of time as the fbi has indicated. these procedures are in place, the procedures are effective in operation now and we are in the midst of that process which the fbi is undertaking at this time. >> again, there's nothing you can say about whether there's any connection in the letter to the boston incident? >> i would point you to

the fbi says both the marathon bombs were made with pressure cookers and metal bee-bees. they contained hobby fuse similar to this. at the scene of thursday night's shootout in watertown, investigators say they found another bomb and hobby fuse and bee-bees. the fbi says they searched dzhokhar tsarnaev's dorm room and found bee-bees in what they call a large pyrotechnic and found a white hat and black jacket, resembling what was worn by the man in the suspect photos released by the fbi. a former federal prosecutor says it's a surprising startling start. >> they took a great unknown, which was last monday and made it virtually unknown a week later. that for the entirety of the law enforcement should be combhited to their efforts. >> court documents contain new details about thursday night's carjacking. the fbi show tamerlan and dzhokhar tsarnaev in cambridge at a gas station where they drove with the owner of the suv they carjacked. one began the carjacking by pointing a gun at the driver and saying, "did you hear about the boston explosion? i did get" the carjacker showed

a couple issues under investigation by the fbi. i thought i would start with that, and then take your questions. as you saw from a statement from the fbi as well as a statement from the united states secret service, there was a letter sent to -- addressed to the president at an off-site mail facility. it was noticed to have contained a suspicious substance and tests were under taken. the fbi has the lead in that investigation, of course, and has said in its statement they will be conducting further tests to determine what the nature of the substance is. of course, there was another letter, as you know, sent or detected by capitol police that was sent to a united states senator. that also is the subject of the investigation by the fbi. and for more information about these matters, i refer you to the fbi. the president i'm sure you'll ask this, the president of course has been briefed on these letters. he was briefed last night and against this morning. secondly, there is obviously a lot of interest in the explosions in boston, and i

what would he prefer if he was in the fbi. and he told our viewers that it really didn't matter, that he felt that the information would come out regardless. what are your thoughts on that? >> well, i think obviously the justice department, eric holder, president obama, the white house, you know, they want this in the u.s. court system. as a result of that, that puts you on a certain path. i think there is some concern here, certainly on my part and others if you don't mirandize him obviously he's entitled to his defense, and the defense is going to take that and make it a serious issue. and so, you know, yes it's great, put him in the u.s. court system if that's what you want to do but be aware that, you know, it's dangerous at times. and so if they start pulling information out of him and they haven't read him his rights, because they say there is an exception in terms of public security, then if they want to go that route i think we have to be careful, because it could come back around and bite us in the back side. jenna: i

so the fbi does the backgrounds. they do whatever they can on the computer and whatnot, and they'll do some interviews. if there's no red flags that go up, this is a very difficult point of view because there's nothing much they can do. it's a democracy. they have to be careful about how they handle it. now, from the other standpoint, i hear some of the agency guys saying you know, they should have followed him. well, you can do that maybe in a foreign country, if in fact you don't get caught at doing it in a foreign country, but everybody has a series of problems and when there's a breakdown in communication, i'm not saying they don't talk to each other. they do. it's a very -- the intelligence agencies and law enforcement agencies do a real good job of it now. but in the past, there have been some problems. but now, there doesn't seem to be a problem. it's just one of those things that nobody knew that this guy came back into the country. when he came back, was he asked to interview him again, don't know. i don't k

the fbi opens a threat assessment. they check their data bases and see if they find anything derogatory about him. they see if he's talking to anyone else that's a terror suspect. they find nothing there. they interview him at his house in cambridge and that comes up negative. they go back to russians in early 2011 saying we got nothing. can you get us more information? something else to go on. the russians never respond. then in september of 2011, officials say, the russians come back to the u.s. this time to the cia with the identical information they came with earlier in the year. the cia at that point puts him into the initial terrorism data base as someone to flag and tells the fbi again. the fbi goes back to the russians and says we've checked this out. once again is there anything else we need to know. they say the russians never respond. it is correct that the russians contacted the u.s. more than once. but the officials say each time they passed on precisely the same information and never responded when the u.

we'll bring back assistant director of the fbi, chris swecker. let me start with you, jim maxwell, since you're here. you're a retired special agent who specialized in the bomb area. this is the kind of bomb that we're talking about, a pressure cooker. fairly crude device but in this case, extremely effectively executed. what do you make of the development today with the two suspects given that it clearly shows a team? >> yes. this type of device basically, based on what i've seen so far, would be used to deliver low explosives, something that moves 3300 feet per second, less than that amount. and this device is popular for low explosives, the common vessel would be a pipe bomb. well, in this particular case, they decided to use this kind of vessel and what it does is it allows low explosives to build up pressure inside the vessel and then it will increase the potency of the explosion by containing that pressure. >> bob baer, let me bring you in here. every day we've talked we found a little bit more. today, a big, big development. do we know any
