ktvu's lorr blanco is live where love ones are grieving tonight. the family declined to comment on camera. after a long day of searching out here, two boaters found his body at the marina. we talked with the two men ewho discovered michael roberts' body. they found him face down floating in the water with a life vest on. the feel le for his family but they are glad they could help in the difficult search. >> we walked out and i said what is that, that is a body. so -- jeff called 911. got a small bingy at the direction of the -- dinghy at the direction of the police department. tied a rope around the body and pulled it in to the dock. >> reporter: divers spent emost of the afternoon searching -- spent most of the afternoon searching the marina. the deputy left to go fishing yesterday. his boat was found this morning drifting with no one inside. police say there is no sign of foul play. at this point it looks like a tragic accident. >> it is always very difficult to deal with. we were hoping it was a mishap where he left the boat untied and our wors

ktvu's robert handa is in gilroy with the developments. robert? >> reporter: it has been a long stressful day for people who live here in gilroy where police just wrapped up an all day stand off with a man who claimed he had fire arms and was ready to use them. police surrounded the apartment complex starting around 6:00 a.m. this morning. officers used robots and k9 units to approach the man who was upset about being evicted and threatened to use explosives. the man talked with police during the stand off. we talked to the woman who lives across from the suspect. she heard the man's threats and it scared her. >> he said he had two bombs and two guns. i believe he has the bombs but not the guns because he was explaining to the cops how he had the two bombs, where they were, what they were made of. and what triggered them. when they would go off. >> reporter: the s.w.a.t. team was preparing to introduce gas, upon seeing the officer's approach the suspect surrendered. nobody has been hurt. >> reporter: at this hour police are searching for weapons o

we go straight to ktvu's jana katsuyama who is mobterring -- monitoring what is happening in boston right now. >> that street is very quiet right now, very different from 2:50 p.m. eastern time. at this hour the latest information on the victims we understand from boston police, two people were killed. that includes an 8-year-old child, more than 50 injured. it has been very difficult looking all day at these images, we wanted to give you an over all look at what happened this morning. >> reporter: two blasts turned the boston marathon's finish line sign a scene of chaos and panic. the bombs seconds apart, near a line of international flags, they shattered nearby windows and knocked runners off their feet. witnesses saw people on the ground crying for people. many lost limbs. >> trying to put pressure on the wounds, whatever we could do. >> reporter: emergency responders rushed to help the injured and get them to ambulances on boylston street. others were rushed to medical centers. >> a few didn't unfortunately make it and we have those people here in the tent. the bombs exploded 4 hours

ktvu's rob roth learned about a push to bring life back to the naval land. rob? >> reporter: we learned there is a major deal in place to develop the property that once housed the naval hospital. >> reporter: there are hundreds of vegetation eating oaks on the grounds and little else. even a hospital that opened during world war ii is gone. it appears changes are in store for this parcel of vacant land in the oakland hills. they signed on to turn this into a community of -- >> houses. reporter: another developer was set to build 960 homes along with stores that they bought from the navy for $100 million but the economy soured and by 2008 they declared bankruptcy and plans to develop fell apart till now. some residents are happy. >> i think it is excellent. >> reporterothers worry about a big development in the area. >> cars and people, it will lose the charm it has had. >> reporter: the developer plans to meet with home owners to hear any concerns. the project sits where he says it will create hundreds of jobs. >> this is a great opportunity to help generate reve

our coverage continues with ktvu's robert handa live in the mountains. robert? >> reporter: well, we saw and felt the effect of the wind. especially here in the mountains. >> reporter: the strong wind had trees swaying today and the older rotting trees came crashing down. the intense gusts battering the mountains took a toll on trees. he was stunned when this tree was knocked down. >> the tree split in half and came down on the house. sounded like we had an airliner on the roof. >> reporter: the swaying branches made it difficult for workers removing a tree that fell against this home while battling the wind. >> does scare you. i have been doing this 30 years now and it is never easy. it is scary. >> reporter: at times he climbed tree to tree to take advantage of the brief calm moments. >> they threat go too long. rotted out, and now it fell. makes it hard to take them out because you are not sure what it is going to do. >> homeowners are keeping an eye on the trees. >> apprehensive when you hear the wind. >> yes, i will be. >> reporter: ktvu chief meteorologist

christien kafton, ktvu channel 2 news. >>> the summer fire season got an early start today with three reperate fires -- separate fires. cal fire says that fire was a- controlled burn that -- a controlled burn that got out of control. it burned 12 acres before it was brought under control about 2:00 p.m. in walnut career firefighters made quick work of a grass fire. the fire started after 9:00 a.m. near power lines. firefighters had the flames out 40 minutes later. there were no reports of damage. investigators suspect electrical equipment started the fire. in south san jose it took firefighters an hour to contain a grass fire that burned a half acre near the golf course. the fire started about 1:00 p.m. a spokesperson said there was no injuries or damage. >>> this week's heat wave prompted a burn ban. the ban is enforced in incorporated areas. any vegetation burning in the areas will need a special permit although camp fires are still allowed in designated campground. >>> not everyone was fighting the heat today. swimmers swam their laps without worrying about getting chills when they

ktvu's deborah villalon has been exploring one theory about the person responsible. but we begin in the newsroom with ken wayne and the kitchen appliance used to make those bombs. >> reporter: investigators have made significant progress in the 34 hours since the attacks. they've determined who pressure cookers were used as bombs. investigators combing the blast area say they determined the items used in the bombs. they found the remains of a pressure cooker. they also recovered this pack it apparently contained one of the crude devices. >> it was determined that both the explosives were placed in a dark colored nylon bag or backpack. the bag would have been heavy because of the components believed to be in it. >> reporter: a boston tv station showed this imagine of a bag next to a mailbox amidst the marathon crowd and the same area after the blast. evidence perhaps of a point of origin. the images have been turned over to authorities. more than 2,000 tips have come in. >> the fbi is conducting the investigation. the fbi is very good at this. so i have no reason to b
