ktvu's pam cook is in our newsroom now to explain the reason why. pam? >> many people will be caught offguard when their bill comes in a bit higher than there thought today. but we did vote for sales increases back in november in the bay area. those take effect today. 16 cities in the bay area are increasing the sales tax today. many now have the highest in the state. the highest increase is in albany where the sales tax goes from 9 to 9.50%. only three cities in los angeles are higher, up at 10%. as far as county sales tax rates, marin county is now at 8.50%. but some of the cities including san rafael and novato will now pay 9%. santa clara county, 8.75. and in san mateo county, you will have to pay 9% unless you are in the city of san mateo. that rate, 9.25. depending upon the city and county you are in, the money will be used for things like roads, public health and welfare programs and police and fire. reporting live in the newsroom, pam cook, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, pam. >>> ten minutes before 8:00. happening right now, the annual white
