th pelley: good evening. the surviving suspect in the boston marathon bombing had a visitor today in his hospital room. a federal magistrate judge. he read dzhokhar tsarnaev his rights, informed him he's being charged with using a weapon of mass destruction resulting in death and she told him he could face death if convicted. according to a transcript of the proceedings, the judge concluded by saying: tsarnaev was represented in his hospital room by three public defenders. prosecutors today also revealed new details about the bombing and our bob orr is in washington to fill us in. bob? >> reporter: scott, law enforcement tells us that dzhokhar tsarnaev has indicate he and his brother acted alone use he attack. because he was shot in the neck, the interrogation has been challenging but our sources say he has been cooperating with written answers. today prosecutors needed to hargince a magistrate there was though evidence to charge tsarnaev so they filed a sworn affidavit revealing new details. 2:38 lastdaafrno

with scott pelley. >> pelley: good evening. another difficult day for boston. the city said good-bye to two victims of the terror attacks. there was a private funeral for eight-year-old martin richard whose childhood innocence we will never forget. sean collier achieved his childhood dream when he became a cop. an army of officers attended his funeral today. we learned why collier was executed as he sat in his patrol car. more about that in just a moment. but first bob orr has information about a shopping trip one of the suspects took to buy explosives. >> reporter: on february 6, ten weeks before the marathon bombings, tamerlan tsarnaev walked into the sea brook new hampshire fireworks store and bought two lock-and-load mortars kits. each kit cost about $200 and contained 24 pyrotechnic shells. investigators now are trying to determine if the brothers used the black powder from those fireworks as the explosive in the pressure cooker bomb. tsarnaev's name was recorded in the store's computer system at the time of the sale. megan kerns was the clerk. >> i do rem

ridge, scott pelley in new york. what is the federal response based on your experience as director of homeland security? what can you tell us the federal response would be in this instan instance? >> i think in the aftermath of 9/11, the communities, law enforcement community, really doubled up. enforcement s, there used to bf agencies and the state and loca thi the maturation of the relationrelationship, drama improved. i suspect the fbi is leading this investigation, there are multiple assignments given to everybody associated with this investigation and all reports, the collaboration and the communication is to this point, exceptional. not necessarily it might have happen 10 or 15 years ago. we learned a lot of lessons. we need to share, communicate, cooperate, and every indication, they have done a remarkable job today. >> tom ridge, you have been in one of these briefings with the president. what happens there? >> i think the president will be getting reports from multiple agencies. i mean, i believe the opes ce

scott pelley spoke with doctors at brigham and women's hospital. >> reporter: brigham & women's is five minutes by ambulance from the scene of the attack. among those in the emergency department were trauma surgeon joakim hagganhaggans. john walls and trauma surgeon dr. zara cooper. >> there were two things going through my head. one was actual fear, just myself, because i hadn't been in such a situation like this before and i really did feel like it was a war zone in some ways, and then another feeling was reassurance because i think everybody really pulled together in a very remarkable way. >> the patients you treated, what did you see? >> significant amount of burns, second and third degree burns as well as penetrated trauma of shrapnel to the face and neck and to the upper extremities. there were traumatic amputations from the blasts, some very sick patients that needed help. >> then there were three patients, i think three in total who obviously had planted their shrapnel as part of their device. small two to three-millimeter types of okay objects like bbs and carpenter nails. >> n

. >> pelley: and we know that her attorney is saying she didn't know anything about it. do you know who else they are talking to? >> well, they're talking to basically every single person who ever had contact with them. i know another piece of this that they're looking at is the older brother, there are records showing that the older brother purchased some fairly large pieces of fireworks in new hampshire. we've been told by experts that, in theory, you could take out the black powder from those fireworks and, if you had a whole bunch of them-- certainly more than there are records for the brother purchasing-- but if you had a bunch of other purchases you could amass enough black powder, technically, to build these types of bombs. it's just an avenue the f.b.i. is pursuing at this point. they think it's possible that that's where the black powder for these bombs came from but they also haven't ruled out other potential sources for the black powder such as gun powder or other things. >> woodruff: devlin barrett with the "wall street journal," we thank you. >> thank you. >

scott pelley is in boston with the updates on the terror attack. >>> and wjz, following more breaking news. american airlines flights across the country are now grounded because of computer problems. american asked the federal aviation administration to halt its flights until 5 -- 5:00 tonight. for some airports in dallas, chicago, and miami. they are stopped until 5:30. some passengers are stuck on these manies on the tarmac, -- planes on the tarmac, while others can't make reservations. passengers are using social media, to flood the airline with complaints, asking what is going on. american says it working as quickly as possible. >>> a big development in front of city hall. maryland state police arrested the driver of a car. 43-year-old johnny johnson was arrested yesterday and is being held on a quarter million dollars bail. he is charged with vehicle ash homicide in the death of 45- year-old matt herselfle. police say herzel was walking by the car. police also say johnson was speeding and under the influence of drugs at the time of the fatal crash. >>> a new surface tax is causin

scott pelley will be live in boston, with updates on the attacks. >>> and this just in, the baltimore city department of transportation suspends speed and red light cameras. problems have surfaced, as it transitioned to a new vendor, including clerical mistakes, involving payment options on citations and the posted speed limit. officials call the mistakes unacceptable and say cameras will be suspended until the problems are fixed. well, bail is set at $250,000 for the man charged in the death of a long-time city employee, hit and killed just a week ago. wjz is live at camden yards. rochelle ritchie has more on the charges and how the victim's favorite baseball team will honor him tonight. rochelle? >> reporter: well, hi, mary. tonight, the fans here at camden yards will be filled with loyal orioles fans, minus 1. the city employee, who was hit and killed last week. the driver now facing a slew of charges in his death. >> reporter: 43-year-old johnny johnson is the man baltimore city police say was behind the wheel of this black acura, when he hit and killed 45-year-old matt herzel. >>

he was shooting video at the finish line when the bombs went off and he spoke with scott pelley on last night's "cbs evening news." >> i was at the finish line about 2:50 p.m. getting runners coming across. folks running in the four-hour zone. there were 9,000 people still on the course. i was squared up right on the finish line and to my right out of blue there was a thud noise and smoke went up in the air. for a split second you thought is this some kind of a firework for a runner, famous runner coming across, a few photographers ran toward the area and as we're running probably under 20 seconds later the second bomb went off up one block up so we knew it was serious. you could immediately see the carnage and people and pools of blood and cuts from the glass. the marathon sports building glass blew out of the front window and it was pure chaos as you can imagine. we already had medical folks in the medical tent treating marathon runners and now they're involved in a triage situation scrambling. saw one gentleman whose leg was severed off at the knee and there were more injuries like t
