berry, ms. dejesus, and ms. knight have been found and they are alive and that we have offered our support to the families and to the three ladies as they move down the road to recovery. now i do want to say, again, this was a traumatic experience for them. since we did not experience it as a community, but for them it's a traumatic experience and we need to give them room in this. so i will introduce you to the safety director. >> good morning. last night just prior to 6:00 p.m. cleveland police communications center received two calls. one from a neighbor to the house on soeymour avenue and second call from amanda berry, one of the missing women. an incident was created in our communications center at 5:52: 30. a police dispatch and first responders arrived on the scene just under two minutes later at 5:54. by 5:58 the responding officers have identified gina dejesus and amanda berry being located at the home. one minute later, they announced they had also recovered safely michele knight. all three of the miss

and on the other side of berry, her sister beth, who has not only seen berry, it has been more than nine years, that's because berry is one of these three women, allegedly in prisoned in this home here in cleveland on seymour avenue, about 15 miles from downtown. and it is just three to four miles if where all of the women initially went missing so many years ago. berry was just about to turn 17 when she up and disappeared. that was back in 2003. also, gina dejesus was 14 when she vanished in 2004 and michele knight was 20 when a loved one reported her missing in 2002. and then yesterday, berry made the move that turned her into the ultimate freedom fighter, breaking through the screen door. i told you again, the home with the porch light, you see the bottom half bashed in, the man who helped get her out of there actually talked to one of the reporters here in cleveland, gave this play by play of this amazing escape. listen. >> they were screaming. i'm eating my mcdonald's. i come outside. i see this girl going nuts trying to get out of the house. so i go on the porch, i go on the porch,

amanda berry was also there for ten years. so during that time, some of the time she might have been completely captive. some of the time, again, we're not sure. were they allowed on the second floor? but something happened to her, too? at one point she said i'm going to go for it. what might have happened to have her make that decision now and not another time? >> well, let's remember, she's the one with the child. and, therefore, it wasn't just about her but also about saving the child. >> could he have done something to the child? >> that's the thing. she might have seen this child growing up. the child was deprived. and, therefore, she felt that she had to save not just herself but also her child. he may have threatened her. we know he threatened her so many times where he said, look, you know, if any of you try to escape, i might kill the other one. so the way that he treated them and it wasn't about that they had so many opportunities to escape, it was simple fact that this is a man who had brainwashed these young women

and manda berry said she had the baby in the house. they but the baby plastic pool under her while she was delivering and michelle knight was forced to deliver the baby. and michelle states that ariel told her if the baby died he would kill her. we're also learning more details about the state of mind of these women after years in captivity. >> reporter: a law enforcement source tells cnn that amanda berry had hit her breaking point. that she was desperate to get out of the house on seymour street. but why was she able to escape now after more than ten years in captivity? >> something must have clicked and she saw an opportunity. and she took that opportunity. i said it the other day and i'll say it today that she is the true hero- >> reporter: that same source says that the other two women gina and michelle could also have run but chose not to, even though they were not bound. and that decision reflected the women's state of mind. the sources go on to say the women relied on each other for survival and though they were mostly kept in
