texas are in an uproar about it. and i don't expect that their concerns on this issue are going to go away with the passage on the law. and i think there will be political consequences in the future as people exercise their opinion about this issue at the ballot box. >> senator turner, the ohio legislature just couldn't let texas have this week alone in this spotlight. they had to jump in with their legislation, too, i see. >> yeah, lawrence, it is terrible, you know, we had hundreds of folks at the state house today protesting this. and particularly we had doctors that talked about how wrong-spirited the provisions are. you know, they tucked them into the budget bill like thieves in the night, because they're cowards, to have women stand alone so we can debate the issues. it makes absolutely no sense, but to hear the doctors talk about the fact that the legislature is standing in the way for them to be able to provide quality health care options for women, their patients and family. there is something wrong with tha

as a democrat in texas, a latino democrat in texas, i feel like yesterday's decision has a very, very special relevance to your political future. >> well, certainly, chris, many of us were very disappointed yesterday in texas and throughout the country with the decision of the supreme court. i live in a state where as recently as two years ago, a federal court found that the texas legislature, the republican texas legislature intentionally discriminated against minorities in drawing congressional districts and other districts and so this voting rights decision certainly doesn't help in a state like texas. >> i would even go a little further than it doesn't help. let's look at the stark facts of the state of texas, it's growing in population, the population growth is coming disproportionately from hispanics, it's going to be the case in the near future that there will be a hispanic majority in that state, if you are a white republican in the state of texas, you have every incentive to limit the growing power of that majority. >> that's exactly right. as you mentioned greg abbott said t

and then there is texas, and what is going on in texas is almost impossible to believe. even if you are not the biggest sports fan, it was game seven of the nba finals, and you would think everybody in texas would be glued to a tv set watching the spurs. but a lot of texans spent the night of game seven buried inside a state capital building until 3:45 in the morning. it was a takeover in austin. they completely upended the texas legislature. now, what is going on here has been odd politics from the beginning. we should have known something weird was going on when we started to see headlines like this back in may. texas lawmakers put down their swords. and then they decided they were going to stay away from all the hot button abortion issues they spent so much time on it, and this time around they are not going to leave it be and put down their swords. why would they change all of a sudden? oh, turns out they didn't change all of a sudden. it was a scam. they did not try to pass new anti-abortion legislation during the regular session this year. and that bought them mont

of the "texas tribune." so give me a sense about how this went from being a local showdown to being a big national story. >> you know, it's amazing how in the world of technology things this never would have gotten the attention of people outside of austin let alone outside of texas become national and international stories. we live stream it had senate debate last night. the senate live streams the debate themselves but we put it out there in a way that other media could embed the video. and very quickly we had more than 100,000 and ultimately almost 190,000 people from around the world watching this story. more than anything else, social media and youtube made it possible for this story to go international and for wendy davis to be the latest folk hero to come out of texas. >> ifill: let's go back a moment. tell us a little bit more about what this legislation would have done. it would have closed 32 of 42 clinics that currently exist, practically? >> well, that's not entirely clear. it would have required

in texas going sort of off the hook. thursday night, protesters flocked to the texas state >>> on friday night's show we reported on politics in texas going sort of off the hook. thursday night, protesters flocked to the texas state capitol to mount effectively a citizens filibuster of sweeping new antiabortion legislation for the state. more than 700 people signed up thursday night to be witnesses to provide three minutes each of testimony to the assembly, to an assembly committee to try to slow down this antiabortion bill. it was on to 4:00 in the morning thursday night/friday morning when the republican chair of the committee finally yanked the proceedings and sent everybody home. that was thursday night into friday. a big remarkable show of force from the pro-choice side in texas politics. on friday night, we spoke with a democratic state representative, jessica farrar, who told us that the protest had been successful in slowing down the progress of that bill. which is is of material consequence here because the spec
