joining me now is captain chuck nash, retired navy captain and fox contributor. someone i turn to particularly when there are this many ships off the coast. what are they e kwiquipped to d captain nash? >> first off, they carry land attack missiles. so you can fire these missiles, they fly about the speed of an airliner. you can launch them from halfway across the mediterranean and have them fly in and with quite a bit of precision strike targets that have been predesignated. they don't strike moving targets. and you have to be careful in your targeting to make sure that you get it right. but they will go where you send them. so if you have a target set in mind to achieve a certain goal, you then target those assets, launch the missiles. they fly across and with precision will blow them up. they have large warheads. >> let me ask you this. because this is a question that a lot of people have. what kind of intelligence do we have on the targets we need to hit? how many civilian casualties could come in the way, which could certainly backfire on any humanitarian ef

let's bring in retired navy captain chuck nash. captain, welcome. good to have you here. >> thanks, martha. martha: what's your reaction to john kerry there? >> i think it's a terribly naive statement to say that the united states wants to commit an act of war against syria, which a military strike would be, and that we're not going to war because it discounts what the syrians will do in response. we don't know if we're going to war. that is up to the syrians to decide once we launch that strike. so that argument on the face of it is, is silly. now, our plan might be we want to do something, quote, unbelievably small and, therefore, they won't react to it. but how do we know that? and oh, by the way, any casualties or deaths that result from that unbelievably small effort that's being done for something that's so important, it just -- the argument is circular, it doesn't make sense, and i think that's why not just do i have a problem understanding it, i think the broad is section of american people have an understanding problem with it which is why

i'm joined by captain chuck nash a retired u.s. navy captain and moks news military analyst and mike barrett a former navy intelligence officer. i'm sure for both of you it's heartbreaking to see that folks in the larger military family are going through this today. captain nash, how do we prevent this from happening? >> i was watching that lady on the monitor before we went on air. it truly is sad. it's that way all over the capital region today because there are so many people who go to work in morning believing they are in protected environments when in fact you can't offer that kind of protection without shutting down the system. it would be so laborious. 3,000 people work in that building. if you took one minute per person to screen people in it would take five hours to get in the building. you have to assume the people on the team are good people and you have to take reasonable security precautions but you can't protect against a madman. it's impossible. martha: 20-20 everything is clearer in hindsight. but he had two arrests

let's bring in chuck nash. good to see you. can we build international support for this? would that be a better way to go? >> well, this is like a house that is on fire and the alarm bells ring. what does it really mean? the political side of this is probably the only thing which is protecting the region and protecting the various players interests in that region. i think what has to be understood by the world community that has been reluctant so far to get involved , at this point, politics, it is too difficult in the g20s setting to even try to bring this up. i am very surprised that the president said he expects to have extensive talks with putin. dagen: what are the chances that, let's say congress does not approve a strike, what are the chances that the president would go ahead on his own and use his executive power. >> total responsibility for all of the unintended consequences that may follow. there is a huge political calculation going on in this. this is a military problem that is going to demand either one side we were soundly receded. there has to be a resoundi
