i'm jon kelley. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. that fire broke out on the eastern side of the mountain near clayton yesterday and we just got off the phone with cal fire who tells us the fire is 1500 acres and it is growing. the weather and steep terrain making it difficult for firefighters. they issued new evacuation orders. >> christie smith is live in clayton. many are trying to seek refuge as the fires burn close to the homes. what can you tell us out there? >> reporter: well, i can tell you we just arrived at the library on clayton road, the evacuation is up and running. i spoke with the red cross and they tell me they have one couple that arrived in their car, trying to sleep it off with their dogs. they are ready for more people to come in and help. they think a lot of the people who did evacuate are probably staying with family and friends. from where i'm sitting i can see smoke and orange glo going on up in the hills. the fire burned about 1500 acres. because of the hazard, evacuations were ordered to include trail ride r

i'm jon kelley. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. breaking news out of oakland where everyone has escaped an early morning fire that damaged a couple of homes. it broke out on 24th street at the intersection of market street near interstate 980. christie smith live at the scene. investigators there now honing in on a cause? >> reporter: yeah, i got an update from the battalion chief. they are leaning into the fact that this may have been an electrical fire. they think it probably started in the laundry room of this blue victorian down there in the middle of the block. that's basically what neighbors are telling us they think happened as well. smoke and flames were coming from that area, the laundry room of the victorian overnight. residents woke up to wra crackl smoke and flames. they were able to get out as it spread to the building next door and then damaged a third building. one woman screamed she needed help getting out and a neighbor had to kick her door in. because these buildings are so close together, firefighters call forwar

"today in the bay's" marla tallez joins us now. this comes one year to the day after we lost bay area native, kristi fence, wi chris stephens. >> it is too early to tell if they are linked in any way. officials are saying a car bomb is to blame for this attack that tore up the libyan foreign ministry meeting. the bomb went off at dawn and damaged buildings next door, including the benghazi branch of the libyan central bank. several people were said to be hurt but with just minor injuries. at this point, no one is claiming responsibilities for this blast. as we just talked about, it has been just one year since u.s. ambassador, chris stephens and two navy s.e.a.l.s and a computer specialist were killed. still, no arrests have been made. this morning, counter christ officials say they have determined several extremist groups are behind this attack. they say t

i'm jon kelley. we have breaking news happening in san jose this morning. a hit-and-run crash that sadly kills two women. investigators are out looking for the driver still on the run this morning. this crash happening at around 3:15 this morning near the intersection of first street and sky port in san jose, that is where "today in the bay's" bob redell is live at the scene. he has all the latest on this deadly car crash. >> reporter: good morning, jon. not far from norm mineta air national. police want to find the driver of that silver mercedes behind me. the vehicle to the right that was involved in this very serious accident that killed two women. this happened around 3:15, 3:20 this morning. investigators trying to figure out who is at fault. they know the two women in the toyota yaris, that's the vehicle with the blue tarp over it. they were making a left-hand turn off north first onto sky port when they collided at the intersection with the mercedes. not clear who had the right-of-way. the collision was so severe, one of the women didn't survive long

i'm jon kelley. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. an update to breaking news in san francisco where a rooftop search for a bank burglary suspect is over after he fell into an apartment. christie smith is live at the scene. you saw police put that man in handcuffs. >> reporter: that happened about with an hour ago. when it comes to this story you don't hear things like this often. their bank robbery suspect they were looking for up on the rooftops fell through the roof and that's how they nabbed him. i want to step aside so you can see the street is back open here on san bruno avenue. they were looking for a man in black after a silent alarm was tripped about 4:00 this morning. that suspect finally brought down and taken into custody a while later. police tell us the man was spotted on a security system inside the bank of america with a crow bar in his hand. firefighters brought out a long aerial ladder truck as they believed he was hopping from rooftop to rooftop. they closed down the street and police went up looking for him. they b

jon kelley has the day off. >>> we do have new details in a deadly trailer fire in san leandro, this one broke out around 3:30 this morning at the trailer park on grand avenue. christie smith is live at the scene now with more on the desperate efforts by neighbors who tried to rescue the two people who were trapped inside. christie, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. right now, fire investigators interviewing those neighbors about what they saw and did as this fire first broke out overnight. i want to step aside so you can see what the trailer looks like this morning. those neighbors tried to help but the trailer filled up with smoke and there was so much debris that they say they couldn't even get in. there was debris from the interior melting and also items packed inside. it was even difficult for firefighters to maneuver but they found two victims. the smell of smoke coming from a small trailer in san leandro woke neighbors in the middle of the night. mildred ortiz says she ran out and heard an elderly woman inside. >> what did you hear her say? >> are you okay? she s

jon kelley has the day off. this crash happened just before 8:00 this morning near excelsior middle school in byron. this is in eastern contra costra county. nbc bay area's bob redell joins us from the scene, on the phone now. and bob, this just appears to be simply a tragic accident. >> reporter: good morning, marla. chp still investigating the exact circumstances, but from what they know so far, they do not anticipate charges against the driver of the suv that ran over this body. in other words, they might determine that this was, as you mentioned, just a horrible accident. this happened a little bit before 8:00 this morning on byron highway. this is right in front of excelsior middle school. a mother driving a black gmc yukon had just dropped off her children who attended excelsior. he was making a right-hand turn out of the school's driveway when she ran over what she thought was a ball. she drove another 50 feet or so, pulled over to the side of the road to find out what was under her vehicle, and to her ho

i'm marla tellez in for jon kelley. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. we have an update to breaking  news in san francisco. a suspect is now in custody following a deadly stabbing shortly after last night's giants/dodgers game in the area of third and harrison not far from at&t park. christie smith talking to police this morning working to get new details. what's the latest? >> reporter: i spoke with police, three people were detained, they are talking with them but right now one possible suspect in custody after the deadly stabbing and we're told that the victim's friends were wearing dodgers sports gear when this broke out. it happened about 30 minutes after the fight ended. it was the 7:15 night game. about 12:40 a.m. officers responded to reports of a fight near the park. officers arrived and found one person stabbed, that person a man transported to the hospital where he died. what this fight was about, that's unclear but police tell me they are still asking for witnesses who saw anything to come forward. christie smith, today. the fate of two do
