ten months after hurricane sandy business is still way down and there's been criticism of the rebuilding effort. our correspondent adam may is on the jersey shore. >> hi joie. we talked to residents and small business owners and politicians including governor chris christie. we discovered there's a big debate about how to rebuild after sandy and how to protect these beach communities from future storms. john and joett jayco are jersey shore, through and through. they're typical of middle class families who have flocked to these beaches for generations. she's a teacher. he's a salesman and they own a home in the modest community of dovell beach new jersey. >> paint a picture of what it was like after the storm. >> when we came off the school buses and came down the street it was ravines, water everywhere, foundations, there was a moat around one of the homes, looked like a moat. >> some of the land had been ripped out, there are pools of water? >> actually right to our right here, this was all a moat filled with water. and it went around this other neighbor's house bag to the lagoon. >> b

they all voted no on sandy relief. this month when flood waters devastated colorado, those same four house republicans who voted no on disaster relief for families in new york and new jersey, publicly called on the federal government to help themselves help their state. federal disaster relief for sandy victims? they don't deserve it. federal government isn't in that kind of business, but hey, me over here, we need that. republican congressman bill flores of texas, ted cruz of texas, they both voted against federal aid for sandy victims. three months later when a fertilizer explosion levelled west texas, those same two asked for federal aid. james inhoff of oklahoma voted to block federal aid for victims of hurricane sandy, then when tornados ripped through moore, oklahoma, senator inhoff asked for that aid for residents in his own state. he said it was quote, totally different. than him traoeulg trying to block relief from sandy. it takes a particular galling sort of hypocrisy to talk that way and more importantly, to

because of hurricane sandy, superstorm sandy that caused so much damage, some of these fire pumps right here weren't working properly because of hurricane damage. they had to bring in giant up -- pumps, giant hoses and had to pump in water from the bay, which is a mile that way in order to get the fire out. take a look right here. this is what they're doing now. they're still trying to put out some of the hot spots on the boardwalk here. and just a short time ago, carol, i got a chance to go on the boardwalk with one of those business owners right near one of those fire trenches where it was dug. here's what i saw. >> this is the trench that they dug from lincoln avenue in seaside heights. they dug this so the fire wouldn't go any further. it's the same thing they do with a wildfire, to try to hold it back. and there's the boardwalk. they're still putting out hot spots down the boardwalk. this is what's left of john's business. not much here to salvage. >> reporter: not much to salvage but, again, at least four blocks here, maybe as many as six blocks, 50 businesses, completely gone. th

neutrogena®. ♪ a boardwalk battled by supper storm sandy. an update from the scene ahead. 1111 ] >> want to quickly update the breaking story. the massive fire devastating seaside park, firefighters hundreds of them from across the area are hard at work right now. their job made tougher by gusting winds, blowing embers. robert is with us now for more on the situation. what's the latest? >> right now, the structure fire basically started around stockton by the ice cream shop and down to lincoln. that is about five blocks of boardwalk. they took part of the boardwalk and created a fire break and right now try to contain it at lincoln to hold it there. we have probably about four counties worth of fire departments in here right now trying to fight this blaze. we're taking water from the bay. we're taking water from all the municipalities that surround us to fight this fire. it's right now something that they think will take 24 to 46 hours to get this in place. the town of seaside heights declared a state of emergency to free up more assets to b

on the rebuilding of hurricane sandy. he told me had been out assessing the new damage. >> for now the fire is contained obviously and right now we are looking at the damages, the business community, and the community itself is the governing body, we're going to assist whatever way we can to assist the businesses that had the losses. >> looking at it from here it's a little hard to determine how bad the damage is. even he the businesses rebuilt were they totaled, how bad would you say it was? >> i'm going to estimate that a majority of the businesses were totaled. >> do you have any idea what the value might be? >> i would say millions of dollars. i would be guessing but millions. >> so when you were speaking to adam may before you were saying that this was the businesses that had rebuilt about half those businesses had rebuilt. can you give us an idea how many of those businesses that had been rebuilt are now lost? mr. . >> a total rebuild, the major were rebuilt prior to the end of the summer. i would say 85% of the bus
