scott. >> pelley: jeff, thanks very much. we're going to have more about the shooting in the second half hour of this expanded edition of "the cbs evening news." in colorado, today, the rain finally let up, and that gave rescuers the break they needed to resume the largest aerial investigation since hurricane katrina. nearly 12,000 people have left their homes. many neighborhoods are buried under several feet of mud. at least seven people have died. about 650 are still unaccounted for this evening. more than 17,000 homes have been damaged or destroyed. in jamestown, colorado, neighbors colleen williams and leon hill were overcome by what they saw. anna werner is in the flood zone. >> clearer skies allowed the military's air rescue to go into full gear. more than 2,200 people have been plucked from towns and homes cut off by rushing water or washed- out roads. we went with the search-and- rescue team as it went door-to- door outside of boulder. jeff hatcher was looking for people who were trapped or holding out. you think they

okay, scott. this morning's bullish jobless claims numbers certainly appeared to spook the job market, so anthony with the economic data picture improving, is gold starting to think the taper is coming? >> oh, i definitely think so. the taper -- unlike equities, i think it's factored in there. gold, it's not factored in yet. yes, i think it's coming. also, physical demand, falling off the cliff. in hong kong, gold dealers are selling bars at spot price, no premium attached. and, also, gold spider trust, less of holdings, down by almost .5% right now. >> jim, if the fed indeed does come out with the announcement on tapering next week, how low could gold go, or do you think it may be factored in? >> no, i think the taper's factored in. i think is more syria. i think people got pulled up on syria, and last night they thought it moved to the back pages. the technicals have been damaged below 1,350. there's a bitter level. i won't sell at 35 in the hole. if it has a bounce, we'll talk about that more o

scott cohn is live in seaside park with the aftermath. over to you. >> reporter: maria, it's heartbreaking because they were so close to coming back. both in spirit and financially. this summer was not good for businesses on the shore. they were down 30%, 40% from a normal summer. they figured they could make it, especially if they could pick up a little more business in september and maybe into october. and then a wind-whipped wildfire that took out some 30 businesses, devastated the boardwalk in seaside park. they had to fight it like a forest fire, so whipped by the wind, jumping from building to building. they had to dig two trenches through the boardwalk they just spent tense of millions to replace after superstorm sandy. after they were doing all that, they were trying to preserve evidence because there's the possibility, although it's too early to tell, this was not an accident. governor christie says the task ahead now is to rebuild. he's determined not to destroy all the work that's gone on in the ten months since hurricane sandy

scott? >>> let's jump into it and find out what's moving as we kick off september, which has been the worst month for stocks since 1950. mary thompson at the big board, dominic is back at the headquarters. mary, kick us off. what are you seeing out there? >> reporter: maria, of course, today is flat, the session coming on the heels of a miserable august for the markets, as well. they've been trying to rally the dow above the flat line, not having much success. slightly -- or fractionally higher right now. here's the story. 11:30, you had headlines crossing that house speaker john boehner said that he did support the president -- or would support the president in the event he went ahead with military strikes against syria. that caused the dow to sell off. as a result, the marks gave up over 100 points. the dow remains under pressure again today. look at what happened with the 10-year yield. sas scott mentioned earlier, the yield climbed above the 2.91% area. it pulled back a little bit. never
