developing news out of union city tonight. a man is dead after a confrontation with the union city police. he was firing a shotgun in a residential neighborhood. after being surgery rounded by police, he refused to -- after being surrounded by police, he refused to put his gun down. >> reporter: a man was in the middle of a street firing from a shotgun. calls from concerned neighbors came in and, within a minute, police showed up. the police commander says the suspect may have come out of a house, and there was multiple weapons found at the scene. >> immediately the man confronted the officers. he refused to listen to commands. there was a confrontation. our officers feared for their lives and the community. they fired their weapons and he was shot and pronounced deceased. >> reporter: following the department's policy after a police-involved shooting, the officers will be placed on administrative leave as the investigation continues. >>> a severe traffic alert is in on southbound 280 in san jose. the center and right lanes ar

nbc bay area's christy smith is live right now in union city with much more on a very touching tribute. christy, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. yeah, the service just wrapped up a couple of minutes ago, and there are a number of family members here, including the family of pilot jason dahl. i spoke with the sister and also spoke with her husband. what they're saying is that over the years the sorrow has disbursed, but on this tragic day the memories come rushing back. they tried to fight hijackers before it crashed. the flight was bound for san francisco, and that fact meant veteran michael emerson to build a memorial here in union city in 2007. since then he has gone on to credit many more. the family says that pilot jason first became interested in flying when he was just 13 years old. the san jose native, of course, life was cut short on september 11th. each stone monument has a name, age, and the person's hometown. dahl's sister says it's important to be able to come right back here. >> there are some things -- there's a lot of, you know, people that were from this

this is the man that the police arrested for murder yesterday in union city. police say coleman was the one behind a silver mercedes when he crashed into carmen zavala and christina alvaro when they were on their way to work. they were trying to turn left on to skyport when the mercedes collided into the toyota and inted of stopping, the mercedes kept going. this was after after he evaded two off officers that saw him swerving. that was seconds before the crash here at north first and skyport that killed the two women. now police say investigators with the covert response unit tracked down coleman. it took round the clock work and described the efforts as complicated but are protecting the investigation by not releasing any more details. we know the santa clara da's office has filed murder charges against coleman which are now our 37th and 38th homicide of the year. >>> the driver of a street cleaner had a close call when he crashed on an overpass in oakland today. take a look at these pictures. the accident happened apt the mcarthur maize at 6:00. morning. th
