because of the toll of gun violence in the civilian streets of washington, d.c., washington hospital center has extensive, extensive experience treating gunshot wounds, so much so that army physicians and navy physicians train at washington hospital center to ramp up their gunshot treatment skills before they deploy into combat zone. the chief medical officer for that facility acknowledged that experience today, that they have had to develop, and then she sort of let loose with some emotion about what it means about us, what it says about us as a country, that that combat trauma experience is needed here at home. speaking today on a day when it very much was needed here at home. >> we see a significant number of gunshot victims here at the hospital center, and i will tell you that between working with our partners that are the first responders, who are excellent at initial stabilization and then bringing them here, we actually are very, very successful in having people live through these multiple gunshot wounds. the other thing that i would mention to you is that we have a very close

navy yard in washington, d.c. the accused gunman is a civilian contractor identified as 34-year-old aaron alexis of ft. worth, texas, he is dead. as are 12 victims and police officer among the wounded. we're expecting a live update in a few minutes and we'll bring that to you when it happens. back now to the investigation, we're learning brand-new details about the two additional people police were searching for. justice correspondent pete williams has been on this since it started. pete, what's the latest? >> the question has been one of the many questions has been whether there was more than one gunman involved in the mass shooting today and it's still pointing toward the possibility that it was just one person. there was surveillance video and eyewitness reports of others. d.c. police have said one of people they were looking for, a white male with a tan navy style uniform and beret has been identified and was responding, was not involved in the shooting. so all indications are that it was just a single gunman

navy yard here in washington, d.c. but there's a multiple -- there's a multitude, shall we say, law enforcement agencies on the scene. you mentioned the fbi, u.s. military police, d.c. metropolitan police. it looks like everybody has moved into this area, evan. >> yes, that's right. wolf, there's a very -- this is an area in washington because of obviously of all of the different threats that are faced with the federal government and the military facilities in this area, they are very well practiced in this area. the d.c. police, for instance, does a lot of drills. they roll out on multiple reports of bags that are left unguarded or unattended near metro stations or outside of public buildings. i mean, multiple times a day these guys roll out to try to secure scenes. so this is something that they are well practiced in. the joint terrorism task force is part of this as well. they -- this is a grouping of the federal agencies and the local police of this entire area and they are all well practiced in trying to secure pl

we're live in washington. this is special live coverage of this tragedy that struck blocks away from us here at the washington navy yard here in the nation's capital. i'm brooke baldwin. >> i'm jake tapper. police search for a motive as new details emerge about the deadly shooting rampage, but we may never really know why a gunman killed 12 people and wounded eight others. >> we're learning new details today. here is the latest exactly as far as what we know beginning with law enforcement sources say the gunman it, aaron alexis, recently contacted not one but two va hospitals apparently for psychological issues. authorities say alexis was a former navy reservist who was discharged after eight instances of misconduct. >> eight instances. right now forensics investigators are scouring the navy yard for evidence. sources say police have recovered three weapons from the scene. one is a shotgun that police believe he brought into the compound. the other two are handguns that may have been taken everyone guards. >>

i'm wolf blitzer here in washington. you're in "the situation room." >>> shock, fear and grief today right here in the nation's capital. at least, at least 13 people are dead after a mass shooting at the washington navy yard, including a gunman who opened fire this morning inside building 197. that's the naval sea systems command headquarters. as s.w.a.t. teams rushed in, wounded were evacuated by helicopter. the dead suspect has now been identified as a military contractor from texas, but authorities say another potential shooter may, repeat, may still be at large. that's kept much of the surrounding area, including capitol hill, which is only about a mile or so away, on alert. the u.s. senate went into lockdown. schools were shuttered. it's a horrible, horrible situation unfolding here in washington. we have seen street closures, flight delays, people are obviously very nervous, among other things the washington nationals have postponed tonight's baseball game against the atlanta braves. the stadium is only a block or
