the tale of caterpillar and boeing set the tone today. for boeing blue skies ahead after they reported a surge of quarterly earnings, a huge backlog of orders and raised the outlook. shares soared more than 5%. but caterpillar found itself in a hole. the world's largest maker of earth moving and mine making equipment said profits plunged and cut the earnings forecast again and the stock tumbled 6.5%. that rattled investors as they worry about growth forecast and the record stocks took a step back toward. two reports taking a closer look at boeing and caterpillar. we begin with jackie deangelis and those disappointing numbers. >> reporter: a big earnings miss for the world's largest maker of earth moving equipment, caterpillar. pro pro profit declined almost 21% and not just profit fell shot, cat's revenue declined 18% and the 2014 forecast fell plat. mining was the challenge in the third quarter according to the chairman and ceo. >> we saw the mines really explode as india grew, china grew and economic growth through the big recession out

take a look out boeing, as well. airbus, they will surpass boeing in five years. the market just turned positive for boeing. $118 a share. october. breast-cancer awareness month. the nfl partakes in raising money for breast-cancer research. how many dollars actually go to the research? for every $100, only $3.54 goes to breast-cancer research. that is a very small amount of money. what you do is you look at money that goes to charities and how mmch actually goes to the cause itself. what do you make out of $3.54 out of $100? >> we think that it is really tragic. we normally look for 90% to go to the cause. there are thousands and thousands of women who die for breast-cancer each year. at the end the day, if they are claiming that the money is going tt the cause and research and so forth, it should not just be for marketing. stuart: we are showing nfl.com right now. $3.54 is a miniscule amount. you advise people on where to put their charitable donations. if you give it to this cause or that cause, x amount of dollars will go to the cause. >> the breast-cancer rese

shocking for boeing an pig win for airbus. they have been trying to break in the major airlines for a long time. it was a handshake that sealed the deal yesterday. 31, a350s. that almost certainly paid much less than that. the new version of the 777, the production has been stop and go and that's where analyst are calling a paper airplane. the airbus is able to say here's an a350, touch it, test it, fly it. boeing is putting the best possible on this. they released a very short statement. it's disappointed that the selection will continue to provide the most efficient an innovateed product in services that meet longer term requirements for the strong releasingship with jal over the last 50 years. it dramatically changed after that deal yesterday. >> the first delivery expected some time next year and the a350 oh should be in service for jal and their long hall flight. not good news for boeing workers an we spoke with an engineer representative today. there's a disappointment that has to change every time the company is shut ou

boeing said this is not a mission critical part of the plane. the company says the panel in question is the mid underwing to body bearing. it is located on the belly of the airplane on the right side and basically provides a more aerodynamic surface in flight. nobody likes to see something fall off a plane when it is flying. air india replaced the missing panel, took it off of another 787 they have not put into service yet and put it on to the other plane. boeing won't say where the 787 in question was built, but this video here is interesting because the very first 787 dreamliner delivered was from the new boeing plant in charleston. we don't know if the one in question with this incident was delivered from charleston or everett. but there you see shares of boeing, nice pop today once the resolution was announced in washington. briefly trading at an all-time high. guys, back to you. >> we got to go. a nine square foot panel falling off a plane. >> that's big. >> they can minimize it all they want. that seems like a big deal. phil lebeau, thank

boeing is accused of overcharging the government. according to a report obtained by bloomberg news -- boeing overstated estimates of new components for ch-47f chinook helicopter. and, primarily installed used parts under a $4.4 billion government contract. a boeing spokesman tells bloomberg it disagrees with the ig's conclusions. the report by the inspector general -- also blames defense agencies and military services for lax negotaitons. it's been 15 years since big tobacco agreed to pay out billions to settle claims of lying about the dangers of cigarettes. according to a report from n-p-r, $100 billion has been paid out so far -- from the $246 billion, 25-year settlement. the c-d-c recommended that a minimum of 14% of the money be directed to anti smoking programs -- but states have reportedly not been forthcoming on how exactly the money is being used. the settlement money did come with no strings attached. he's already sold stock to raise money to pay investors. now-- hedge fund manager steve cohen plans to sell some famous work

boeings loss, is a big gain for airbus. airbus scored a 9 billion dollar order this week with japan airlines. boeing and airbus -- locked in a rivalry, are closing in on a critical time for sales. currently airbus is beating out boeing for the first time in more than a decade. gas prices are plunging at the pump. the average cost of a gallon of regular unleaded is $3.34 down a nickle from a week ago and 23 cents from a month ago. the most since november 2012. the lundberg report cites refiners passing along lower costs for crude. crude futures have ben dropping during the past month. however, analysts do not expect the decline to continue. two superbowl regulars are sidelined this season. subway and cars dot com, seen here in last year's ads, do not plan to advertise during the superbowl broadcast this year. cars dot com says it will spend more, on more ads throughout the year. while subway cited cost concerns. a 30 second ad costs a record 4 million dollars this year. university of chicago economist allen sanderson predict
