let me read for you one thing dana bash was able to find. this is our dana. this was something that was an advisory that went out to the house gop. at this morning's conference, the leaders will be rolling out a plan to provide for a temporary increase in the debt limit as we pursue other avenues for negotiation. that is only the first part of it. dana bash joins me now live to talk about the rest of it. way to go. excellent scoop. so, it's true. they're going to make this overtur. how many republicans are on board with this, do you know, dana? >> well, ashleigh, let me set the scene. i'm on the phone. we're in the basement of the capitol waiting for the speaker and the rest of the leadership to come out of this meeting. and so the headline is that it appears that the legislation that they presented to the house republican caucus is for a six-week increase in the debt ceiling. so, six-week increase in the debt ceiling and, you're right, it would not provide for the government to reopen, but republican leader source just told me coming out of this meeting that

let me ask you dana. do you think this division is something really interrupting potentially good friendships? >> not in my own personal sheerns. >> you don't have friends. >> i have a dog. >> here's an example. there's a reason you don't talk politics at dinner parties. you can fall out with friends or families. the biggest fights at thanksgiving is when uncle so and so brings up politics. we don't have that here. when i worked at white house, you were surrounded by people that all agree with you. when you break out of that, you realize you can't have friendships. the identity of politics have become stronger. people don't join groups anymore. you're identified with a smaller group of people and talking amongst yourself. >> you and i have significantly different politics to say the least. i'm a liberal and you're wrong. seriously, do you think this identifying people by labeling them is causing us -- forget just friendships but the bigger question as a country, as a government, are we grinding to a halt?

but can i just jump over to candy on that very point that you made, dana, keeping an eye behind dana, might this not be the moment when the democrats really do need to start discussing negotiation in earnest if we can get past the cr, this short-term spending bill to get to the end of this debt ceiling issue? isn't this the time? >> well, if anything the president has been more clear on the debt ceiling, the language is pretty tough, it is uncompromising, and, you know, that's when he first brought it up was on -- by the way, the debt ceiling, we've already spent that money and they need to just do this. there are ways around it. we were discussing this this morning, there are lots of things they could do. the problem for republicans right now they need someone to negotiate with other than themselves. >> so what kind of back room conversations might actually be going on other than this meeting, dana bash, that happened with john boehner in the last hour where i'm not even sure who was part of that meeting, which members are part of the meeting. maybe you could start from there and wha

dana, first to you. what are you hearing about what the house republicans at this meeting with the president under way right now, including the speaker, john boehner, what's the message they are trying to convey to the president? >> reporter: i talked to several house republicans sources before heading over to the white house. they told me first and foremost they want to get a guarantee from the president that he would actually support and ultimately sign what they want to pass, which is a short-term deal about six weeks to raise the debt ceiling, and in that time, they would use -- they would negotiate on bigger questions about the debt and deficit. the reason why they want to get that guarantee is because they don't want to put this on the house floor as soon as tomorrow and have their republican members, particularly conservatives who are not thrilled with this, what is effectively a clean bill, to do it for what one source called recreational purposes if it's not going to go anywhere. the other goals

dana bash, let me bring you in. language i heard going back to the potential reading of the tee leafs and good news that both of these men are confident there could be results. the optimism seems pervasive on the floor a deal will be reached this week. >> absolutely. and to hear it from harry reid is one thing. to hear it from mitch mcconnell, the republican leader, is another. very, very critical moment here for several reasons. one is because it is the republicans that are -- they're the ones who are probably going to have to give, particularly when it comes ultimately to the house of representatives led by republicans who, of course, have been trying to force at the beginning of this, the defunding of obama care, delay of obama care. they're the ones who want to feel comfortable that their brethren in the senate led by mitch mcconnell are carrying their water at least as much as they can. the fact that mitch mcconnell sounded so positive is indicative they feel good they can get what everybody hopes in the senate

dana, hi. we're getting awfully close to the debt ceiling crisis. >> we are, and according to senator reid who i just spoke with walking from mitch mcconnell the republican leader's office back to his own, i asked if they were getting closer to a deal and he said we are getting closer. he said we're not there yet. but they are getting closer. and the other question that was asked is whether or not he thought they could have a deal by the time leaders go to the white house which is at 3:00 eastern. that's in 2 1/2 hour. he said i sure hope so. he said that we're still talking about everything. not there yet. but he certainly sounded more optimistic than weigh have heard people sounding in the past. let's face it, just the fact that he was walking out of mitch mcconnell's office, the republican leader, that just is a good sign based on everything that has been going on or rather not going on for the past 24 hour. so it definitely has the feel of something that could gel soon. we're going to have

danas will be pushing off towards the west. temperatures really reflecting that subtly warm air flowing in out ahead of it. as far as the americas goes, we have been watching this one storm system rolling across the eastern seaboard. now jetting off to the northeast. still lingering showers right near coastal areas. for the most part, high pressure is ridging in behind it. it is just making for some absolutely beautiful weather. the one foul weather spot is still going to be out towards the pacific northwest. a few lingering showers, even snow in the higher elevations. take a look at these temperatures. sunny skies dominating the forecast throughout much of central canada, even extending down towards the south. houston expecting 30, with sunny skies here. now, as far as europe goes, we do have several systems in the north. the one low pressure area continuing to spin down towards the mediterranean. that's bringing severe weather. actually, thunderstorm watches and advisories, and also flood watches in effect across much of ital
