meghan mccorkell has the latest on what happened. captain jeff long is in sky eye 13. >> that search continues to grow and grow. we watched the state police have now arrived here on the scene in route 1, in north laurel. where an officer was shot, earlier this evening. now, howard county police have briefed the media in the past hour. here's what they say happened. around 4:00, howard county police officers responded to a call of a gunman, pacing along route 1. three officers responded to the scene. police say when the officers came upon that man, that man immediately fired upon them, hitting one of the officers. the other two officers returned fire. but the suspect jumped a guardrail and ran into the woods. and tonight, police are using every resource available to find that gunman. >> right now, there is an active search for the shooter. we don't know his whereabouts. we've got helicopter, k-9, and surrounding jurisdictions, assisting us in the search. >> reporter: now, the officer that was injured is said to be in serious condition

meghan mccorkell has more on the crime. meghan? >> reporter: that latest that happened on thursday at a substation in gambrills and it's not the first time that facility has been targeted. police looking for this man who they say took a dangerous and sometimes deadly risk. investigators say he cut through a fence at this high voltage substation on thursday, a facility that requires workers to wear flame retardant suits at all times. >> many times those thieves can be severely or even fatally injured. >> reporter: investigators say the man stole various amounts of copper and got away and it's not the first theft case here. they've become a prime target for copper thieves with some stations, even power poles being hit. >> we have cameras in many of our locations and take other proactive steps and work very closely with local law enforcement to make sure we're protecting our infrastructure. >> reporter: the fbi named copper theft a threat to infrastructure. nearly 14,000 metal thefts were reported and that number skyrocketed to more.

meghan mccorkell has details on this case. meghan? >> well, kai. charging documents, just released to wjz, revealed new insight on the minutes leading up to that shooting. >> reporter: in is a surveillance photo of stephan prather, moments before he opened fire on howard county police. >> reporter: according to court documents, it was an employee inside an auto max that first called 911. prather had come to test drive a car. but the employee noticed a gun in his pocket and was worried he would be robbed. prather saw the officer and pulled out a gun. >> he wasn't shooting or yelling or anything. it -- it just seemed odd. >> reporter: aaron was driving at this time. he watched as prather opened fire on officer hawk. >> reporter: officer hawk was shot once in the torso. he is still recovering here at shock trauma. praghtder ran into the woods and officers fired at him for 17 hours. police combed this area, searching for the gunman. early thursday morning, he was spotted along route 1, by a man working nearby. >> i stopped right there. and i saw one of
