last week, the winds fanned fires which destroyed over 300 homes west of sydney. a squall line pushed through sydney area bringing winds up to 100 kilometers per hour. what you're seeing here is a couple of people being rescued from a car. a tree fell on their car and trapped them inside. emergency services there came to rescue them. numerous trees were uprooted, damaging homes, and over 600 calls for assistance from the emergency services. very busy day for the emergency services today in southeastern australia. well, it's going to be another night, tuesday night, for very unstable for the coast here. wednesday looks a lot better. you can see the storm system starting to move offshore. but unfortunately, it's heading straight to new zealand. it's going to be on wednesday some very severe weather for you in new zealand, potential for flash flooding with those strong storms coming through. and some very high winds, too. from one storm to the next one, it's going to be focusing attention on the midwest in towards the south of the united states. and into the northern

andrew thomas is west of sydney following this story for us. andrew, thanks for joining us. the winds have changed. i believe that is some good news? >> that's right. well scenario is being painted on tuesday and wednesday morning by fires chiefs of what was likely to com come. we are pretty apocalyptic. the wind were high and it doesn't seem the fires have gotten that much worse. there are more than there were. 71 opposed to 60. the fires have not impacted on people's homes as was feared. the wind was strong all day but the direction was into the forest and away from people's homes as well. as things stand now the scenario looks much, much better than expected i spent much of the day with firefighters who were watching those fires. 234e werthey were putting them e they needed to. but where they were not threatening homes think were the leaving them be. most of the firefighters were pleased as the day went on it seemed to get better for them. the temperatures have dropped considerably. the wind although it's still there, has dropped as well. the bi bigger question is what s

here's sydney. close up view says there are three complexes here in the blue mountains and these two could merge, could even merge with the one north of springwood. that would create three fires merged together. the wind is pushing it towards populated areas, that is the big concern over the next 24 to 48 hours. you can see what is causing this wind direction change, storm is spinning clockwise, in the southern he hemisphere, that's w they spin there, changing that wind direction initially and increase the wind speed. once that storm moves off the storm may come in from the south and bring in some much needed moisture. does not look like the rain could make it up to sydney but could bring in cooler air and possibly moisture. a lot of the firefighters are volunteers, in that section of the country and some of the areas are coming from areas impacted by the fires. they are exhausted working so hard. blue mountains fires they could merge, that is what could happen near sydney. the wind direction will c

. , ins speak to phil mercer sydney for us. let's adjust the idea that the australian military actually caused the fire in lythgoe. >> this will cause an immense amount of anger and dismay in the australian community. we are hearing that the fire service is confirming that the biggest blaze in the blue mountains -- or certainly one of them -- was sparked by the military. a live explosives operation in a military base apparently sparking that blaze near lythgoe in the blue mountains. so, there will be a lot of finger-pointing and anger because of this particular fire caused so much devastation and anxiety among those people who live in that part of eastern australia. ministry putfense its hand up and acknowledge this? >> what we are hearing in eastern australia tonight is the military says its investigation are still continuing. the fire service said it has carried out its own inquiry and is satisfied the military was to blame. causes ofook at the fire inustralia, many cause by lightning strikes or power cables rubbing together,

impacts the western suburbs of sydney. that will be catastrophic. the state emergency described means that firefighters have the right to compel people to leave rather than request them to leave their homes. it means firefighters have the right to go in and tell people to get out because we're going to take your house down and demolish it because it's in our way. some drastic measures there if the authorities need them as the winds pick up and the temperatures increase over the next 24 to 48 hours. a very serious situation. australian authorities are saying these are the worst bush fires across the state of new south wales since the 1950s. that gives you some idea how big this bush fire crisis is. >> stunning the efforts firefighters are doing to stop the blazes. what's expected, though, over the next few days? >> reporter: well, they're hoping to contain the fires. that's what it's all about. what they do is fight fire with fire. they light the bushland, the scrubland around the h of the fire perimeter and create a buffer

you can see the smoke, ash, and fire going right over sydney. this is smoke and ash from all of those fires, and clearly scene from the satellite picture. a lot of the darker gray colors are fires. so we're watching that situation closely. as far as the country goes, denver just climbed above the freezing mark, but this area coming from the north. nice there yesterday, but today temperatures are about 15 degrees colder, and now western kansas and colorado seeing some light snow. right there is a winter weather advisory, but the bluish color, it's a freeze watch is issued, they issue this once per season and tonight looks to be the night, because tomorrow morning it will be very cold there. a little farther north we're getting another shot of cold air. look at sunday, 41 for a high temperature in minneapolis. cold air is in place but it is dry on monday and tuesday of next week, and low temperatures into the upper 20s. so that will be for the start of the workweek. the weekend looking to be fairly nice here, but not everywhere across the northeas
