cnbc's courtney reagan joins us with the details. good evening, courtney. the timing of this announcement caught people by surprise. >> it did. on first blush, it seems a little surprising the world's largest retailer would choose the busiest week of the year to announce a ceo transition. but it's not all that surprising when you understand the company. an annual november meeting of mike dugan informed the retailers board he would be retiring. the board then cast its vote for doug mcmillan, current walmart international ceo to take the helm february 21st, 2014. and duke took over on february 1, 2009. duke will be ceo through the holiday quarter and will transition mcmillan over the next couple of months just as lee scott did for him. duke will remain on as chairman for a year. most have mcmillan. mcmillan was with the company was sam walton was still ceo. he has been trained on mr. sam message. he has expert on walmart and sam's club businesses, international, online and more. and is the youngest ceo since sam walton himself brings a little youth. >> in his

[ applause ] can >> thank you very much. >> courtney, you are a dancer, you are young and energetic. were you shocked and surprise when you got this diagnosis? >> i was surprised when i got the diagnosis. but when i think about it, my grandmother has primary progressive multiple sclerosis. >> i used to say to my mom "i have sparkles" on my arms. it was a different feeling than falling asleep. >> for starters, the symptoms are different from person to person. tell us the symptoms you are experiencing? >> i think my biggest symptom that i experienced is fatigue. i find that with fatigue, a lot of the other symptoms come into play. you know, like slurred speech and my balance is sometimes a little off . >> in addition to that, though, people who suffer from ms, may also experience weakness, dizziness, problems with balance, and coordination. loss or a challenge with their vision, and depressed mood. and 50% of people who have ms, complain from time to time of poor concentration. difficul

in fact, courtney hodges, lieutenant general commander of the u.s. first army had what appears to be a nervous break down of sorts at a very inopportune moment. he closed the door of his office and put his head down on the desk and basically for 24 hours, the chief of staff ran first army at a time when it appeared as though the germans might overrun first army. there was concern that hodges was obvious they not up to it. field marshal montgomery, although this is not a defector was given the responsibility of taking over hodges first army and a big portion of the american forces. in summary went and looked hodges directly in the eye and came to the conclusion that in fact he had righted the ship somehow, that whatever affliction had caused him to put his head down on the desk seemed to have passed. he wrote to eisenhower, who was the supreme commander in europe that is not the man i would've chosen, but i think were going to be okay. i'll keep a close eye on him. hodges recovered sufficiently to finish the war out. there were a number of instances w
