ken cuccinelli ran alongside, e.w. jackson, lost tonight, say gay people are sick, military homosexualized. obama the antichrist. they picked for attorney general, a state senator stood with cuccinelli getting the birth control ban, and proposed any woman who suffers a miscarriage has to report the miscarriage to the local sheriff within 24 hours. so the sheriff can investigate the circumstances of the miscarriage. because you know, small government. and so, yeah, history says republicans should have had this election tonight in virginia. in a walk. there is a democratic president for more than 30 years, now that means it has been guaranteed a republican would win the virginia governorship. if you ask virginia men tonight. that would have been the case. but virginia women are so strongly against the way republicans have been governing in virginia and propose to keep doing so that they have changed that political streak entirely. the beltway press has never seemed to understand that this is about policy. and honestly th

they talk about cuccinelli, the role of the shutdown, the politics in washington. a lot of this is about the president. new poll numbers came out for the president. they're pretty grim. approval, 39%. how is the president affecting the big races? >> it is interesting. i would argue that the clintons had more to do with virginia than the president did. >> they were down there all over the place. >> mcauliffe is a very close friend of the clintons. the president did go and campaign. i think when you look, you have to take this as a multidetermined race. as all races are, it is some of what john talk about. the changing demographics. and it is also always about the aura at this particular point of the presidency. nonetheless, northern virginia with all of those voters is very government oriented. very defense contractor oriented. and they were among the most furious about the government shutdown. so it had sort of an outsized effect on them. nonetheless, you have to look at the demographics and say maybe cuccinelli was not the imagine for this time. >> too conservativ

they are cuccinelli republican areas. we are still waiting on returns from a big swath of northern virginia which should favor mcauliffe. is a relatively close race, closer than some of the poll suggested it would be. he is roughly on par with president obama's numbers and a swing sweet counties -- counties which is one of the main suburban counties outside of the capitol in richmond. performed obama. cuccinelli will be the underdog race remains too close to call. >> about 80% of the vote now in and ken cuccinelli is ahead, 47% to 60 -- 46%. all of the polls are this past week showing terry mcauliffe ahead and the libertarian candidate getting anywhere 8%.ween 5%- that does not seem to be the numbers so far. hashe libertarian candidate been consistently polling around 7% and that might drop off some edcause these are areas favori e so he has underperformed a little bit but still doing better than both campaigns expected. a surprise tonight is how tight these numbers are, how tight they were in the exit polling we saw. the

but the reason he was not on the ballot and ken cuccinelli was, is because ken cuccinelli, the tea party guys and the hard right guys out maneuvered them. they picked their choice at a convention, instead of putting it to a vote nation wide. that let them pick their fire and brim stone right-hard choice. that is how you got him instead of bill bowling as the republican candidate for governor. that is how you got a guy like e. j. bowling. the republican's only hope statewide, is too close to call. even after what happened last night, the republican party is making no plans to change that system on how they pick their candidates. they could go back to the old system and choose their candidates in the primary instead of just at a meeting. but they're sticking with the "jut at a meeting" plan, sticks with the convention plan, it could go back to that old system of choosing the candidate at a primary, but they're not doing it. they're going to pick the same system to pick the person running against mike warner. why change, right? everything worked out to greso . there are a lot of things that
