dr. gupta: you can imagine, for example, maybe a sponge. and if you put a drop of water on some pieces of rock, that water is immediately absorbed. narrator: near the surface, porous rocks like these act as aquifers for drinking water. but as you get deeper, this is not the case. layers of porous rock can contain oil, gas, or in this case, brine, or salty water. dr. gupta: you want to make sure that the co2 that you inject is deeper than any freshwater sources of groundwater. so as you go deeper, that high-salinity water is not useable now or in the foreseeable future for any other uses. that's why it can be used for injection. narrator: these brine, or salty reservoirs, can be an ideal location for carbon sequestration. but just as critical as their porosity is their permeability, allowing the carbon dioxide to move through the rock's pores. but permeability can enable the co2 to move upwards and escape to the surface, making a nonporous impermeable layer above the reservoir, known as cap rock, another important, necessary characteristic.

i heard you talking to dr. sanjay gupta earlier. i was just at a clinic here at the tacloban airport which is the point everybody converges on. according to patients there, it's the only hospital left in this area still willing to see patients. they're overdevel they're overdevelop. ed. you would think they would be swell supplied. but there are only two flights out every day. it is a desperate situation for people in tacloban, in the surrounding areas. you go into some of these neighborhoods, and there are people as you said, just wandering around, searching for their dead children. i met a woman who lost six children. she found the bodies of three of them. she covered them up as best she could, but she's still looking for three of other her children. and everybody you talk to seems has lost somebody. >> it's day five since this typhoon hit and everyone seems to be trying to help. there's an international presence there, but aid getting to folks seems to be very, very slow. and lives are on the line right now. what's the biggest pr

i will be joined by our chief medical correspondent, dr. sanjay gupta. what do you make that they're saying about the calculator? >> well, they have been saying it for a while now, the calculator has been in the works for a few years now. basically, what happened in the last several days they greatly expanded a group of people who should be recommended the statin drugs. so if you have diabetes, type 1 or 2, you would be recommended a statin drug, if you have heart disease of any kind, you would be recommended a statin. if your bad cholesterol is above 190, you would be recommended the statin, 10 years of having heart disease, at 7%, that is the one drawing the confusion. what people are focused on. if you put the numbers in on a risk calculator, for a 60-year-old man who has basically normal numbers, cholesterol below 200, for example, he would meet the criteria, he would be recommended the statin drug, even though he has relative normal numbers. i'm 44 now, pretty good numbers, my risk is low, around 1%. but if i do everything right over the next 20 yea

chief medical correspondent dr. sanjay gupta joins us on the phone from london. you're familiar with the insurance industry as a doctor, as well ace journalist. how well do you think the insurance industry and companies are going to react to this news from president obama that individuals who have been kicked off their plan, because the plans don't meet requirements of obama care, can stay on their plans for an additional year? >> i think it's tough to paint the entire insurance industry with one broad brush. certainly it's a bit disruptive and people already start thinking about whether it's going to have an impact on premiums, cost for insurers, people buying policies next year. but you know, when you talk to these folks -- i've been reporting on this for a long time -- it's a long game here. you know you -- the whole concept of something known as adverse selection, which you've been talking about on your program, this idea that if your adversely selecting, people costing more money, that's not going to work and people have been describing it as this house of c

cnn chief medical correspondent dr. sanjay gupta takes a closer look at that report. >> fred, it's this hot new treatment for older men. you've seen these ads for testosterone replacement therapy, touted as a way to turn back a man's body clock. there was a study published this week in the journal of the american medical association and found the men taking testosterone therapy had a 29% greater risk of death, heart attack and stroke than those not on the hormone replacement. the way they did the study, researchers looked at more than 8700 men treated through the va hospital who had low testosterone levels and were undergoing a coronary angio graham, a heart vessel angiogram. that looks for blockage or narrowing in the coronary arteries. they found men using testosterone replacement were more likely to suffer from a heart attack or stroke about three years after they received the angiograms. that is compared to men not on the hormone testosterone therapy. when you look at a study like this, the doctors need to point out

chief medical correspondent dr. sanjay gupta is joining us now. sanjay, you reported from areas that have suffered from catastrophic situations that are very similar to this. haiti, japan, even katrina, new orleans. what sort of health problems will the people of the philippines be facing? >> well, you know, as you're hearing there, it is tough to watch and but the basics apply here, clean water and it's a big challenge, obviously, move this water supply into an area that is wide hit and food, water being the most important. decisions that get made. you want to get water there as quickly as possible but is it a question, also, of creating larger footprints in the area so you can desailunate water and make it available for people overall in the days and weeks to come. so, those are the big ones. infectious disease outbreak is always a concern, but, you know, having covered a lot of these stories probably not as big of a concern as people think they're going to be. usually they can be pretty well controlled but the basics so important right now. >>

dr. martin macneill found guilty early this morning of murder in the death of his wife. it was an emotional moment for her family. >> that cry coming from his daughters who testified. ted rowlands has more from utah. >> reporter: fred, it took the jury a long time, about 11 hours of testimony. they wanted to push through. the judge asked if they wanted to go home. they said no. just after 1:00 in the morning in provo, utah, they came to the unanimous decision of convicting dr. macneill. it was all circumstantial. they had no direct evidence against the doctor. what they did have was his daughters. they all testified -- five of them testified against him in court, and jurors said that made the difference. take a listen to alexis summers, her reaction, she took the stand against her father. take a listen to her reaction after the verdict. >> we're just so happy he can't hurt anyone else. we miss our mom. we'll never get her back. that courtroom was full of so many people who loved her. i lo

joining us from atlanta, dr. sanjay gupta, and from cnn sports and bleacher report, dr. andy sholl sflt. let's talk about the young kids. coming up through pop warner leagues and into high school programs, we know that there is concern about our youth and playing football. let's show one of the results. 80% of those polled says concussions are a serious issue for high school football. that is an have a ordinary amount. will we see the way the game is played change at all? >> i think so. a few years ago, hardly anyone was talking about this issue and now just about everybody knows something about this issue. some know more than others. there are people who are legitimately concerned and have expressed those concerns. you showed the numbers 80% versus 17%. when you look at the nfl versus middle school and high school, i think we have numbers on that, as well, whether people view the nfl less favorably because of the handling of the concussion crisis, 36% of people say yes, that they actually view the nfl less favorably. so there have been some actions by the nfl certainly

chief medical correspondent dr. sanjay gupta is at the cnn center with much more on this. this could impact -- this means something very big for about a quarter of americans over the age of 40. why are the guidelines such a big deal? >> i mean, you're talking about one of the most popular cardiac heart medications out there. they think these guidelines could potentially double the number of people taking these medications. let me just give you an example of what we're talking about. these statins or cholesterol-lowering drugs, for a long time, doctors gave them for somewhat specific reasons with, lower the total cholesterol below 200, lower the bad cholesterol below 100. they want to loosen the guidelines and they say for all these different things, if you had diabetes you'd be recommended a statin or evidence of heart disease, you'd be recommended a statin. there would be people who had bad cholesterol for congenital reasons. the point is if you do the math on all this, it increases the number of people. >> make the guidelines more understandable but one thing that seems

dr. sanjay gupta has more. >> brianna, i would tell you, i think this has been a long time coming. the law was passed in 208, but the background on this is for decades the health care system has pretty openly i think discriminated against the mental health field. we so that in so many ways. mental health, substance abuse illnesses. insurance often wouldn't cover treatment, and it was often looked at as a taboo, compared to physical ilnecessary. as opposed to somebody who came in with chest pain, who would obviously get treatment right away. but today hhs that's going to change, because the new law -- this is specifics now, the new law requires health insurance companies to cover mental health and substance abuse just as it would physical illnesses like diabet diabetes. what does that mean? it means you can't limit how many visits to a therapist, for example, co-pays, out-of-pocket expenses. they have to provide the behavioral health coverage and make it on par, parity with physical health coverage. if you think about it broadly now, in the medical community, they're often thought o
