gregg. >> jennifer griffin, thanks very much. we're also learning more about the events that may have led up to the latest historic agreement, according to the associated press, the united states and iran were engaged in a series of secret face-to-face talks over the course of the last year. those talks reportedly led by two members of the obama administration. apparently the discussions were kept hidden from america's closest allies including israel. julie pace, one of the reporters who worked on that story for the associated press spoke to anchor chris wallace on "knox news sunday" earlier this sunday about the importance of those meetings. >> those are the meetings that really laid the groundwork for this agreement that we saw last night. it was in these meetings that some of the details were actually discussed between the u.s. and iran and that's the deal that actually was then brought to the p-5 talks and a lot of the allies were surprised that this deal came together a little more quickly than they expected and that's in la

jennifer griffin, thank you. >>> the white house is confirming president obama has spoken with israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu about the deal. we're told the president reaffirmed the shared goal of preventing iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon, but netanyahu is strongly against the deal. he calls it "a historic mistake." we have more live from jerusalem. leland, what are the people in jerusalem saying right now? >> reporter: the issue between the president and prime minister, two very different world views in terms of the iranian nuclear program. the leaders seem to be talking at each other, both privately and publicly. for the israelis, they say they do not want the iranians of to see the ability to get a bomb. that means dismantling their centrifuges, giving up their nuclear fuel, those things. for the united states, it seems enough the iranians don't actually have a bomb. which is a very distinct and different view of the world. prime minister netanyahu didn't pull any punches today after learning about this deal. >> last night is not a historic agreement, it's an histor

jennifer griffin with the latest from the pentagon. what do we know about this deal? >> well, shepard, secretary kerry was intentionally vegas just moments ago at the state department where he announced that a deal had been made. he was pressed on what were the details of the deal and he would not go into it. perhaps the biggest unknown is that the afghan president who, by law, has to step down in april has put the future of the status of forces agreement into the hands of these 2500 tribal elders known as aloyagerga. if this group science off on groups remaining in afghanistan, an agreement must then go to the afghan parliament. the biggest sticking point is jurisdiction over u.s. troops. the afghans wanted to try u.s. troops in afghanistan if they commit a crime. that's not going to happen. then there is the issue of night raids, the details of what u.s. forces will be allowed to do if they remain after 2014 is controversial for the afghans. secretary of state john kerry called president karzai late yesterday. they continued those conversations today. secretary kerr

jennifer griffin is live at the pentagon with us. so there is a big day tomorrow and what exactly is happening and why is this significant? >> about 2500 carbo tribal elders will decide the fate of whether any u.s. troops will be able to stay in afghanistan post-2014. it's called a loya jirga and it's so important to the process of getting a bilateral improvement. remember he flew out to afghanistan last month when it looked like the deal was on the rocks. and the reason this is so important is you have to remember that the u.s. failed to reach an agreement in iraq and had to go all the troops out at the end of the war and none could stay behind and train iraqi forces or carry out counterterrorism operations. a lack of agreement would severely impact droned strikes being carried out. so all of us are going to have our eyes on the loyola lilla jÜ. >> that came out of the office yesterday now it appears that susan rice said there is no letter, and this is different from what we heard yesterday. >> more broadly i would reiterate that w

our national security correspondent be jennifer griffin is live at the pentagon with more, and it's really becoming a very big story, jennifer. what does president karzai want, why is he doing this? >> reporter: well, jenna, in a word, to remain relevant. april is when he is slated to step down. he also wants to extract a few more concessions from the u.s. he wants the u.s. to release taliban prisoners from began a tan mow may, bealso probably wants more money from the u.s., and he wants the u.s. to stop entering afghan homes at night even in pursuit of terrorists. >> translator: we will fix the agreement and also continue our negotiations on it with america. >> reporter: now, the u.s. doesn't think that the agreement needs fixing. karzai signed off on the agreement with secretary of state john kerry a month ago. in the last 24 hours, karzai snubbed not only the council of elders which he hand picked and invited to kabul to debate the deal which, again, he had already agreed to, but he also rebuffed national security adviser susan rice who was in kabul yesterday. rice was clearly perturbed
