here on the jersey shore, one of the images that people saw over and over after superstorm sandy was of that roller coaster in the atlantic ocean. locally they called it the jet star, and six months later, it is still in the water, and the pier that it used to sit on is still destroyed. this pier and that boardwalk right there define the borough of seaside heights, and right now, they are racing to rebuild it, and the man leading that charge is the local mayor. mayor akers, this is a huge construction site. how bad was the damage from sandy? we were totally wiped out. our entire boardwalk was destroyed. so we had to start from the ground up. and so everything was gone. how far in either direction? 'cause i'm looking at a lot of boardwalk here. akers: this is a one-mile boardwalk, and every single block was totally destroyed. kevin: unbelievable. so this is essentially the artery for your town here. i mean, this has to be here. akers: this is how we balance our budget, through tourism. 65% is through tourism, 35% through property owners. how many people enjoy this boardwalk every year

in bringing his campaign to an end here along the jersey shore which is a sentimental journey as well after what he says has been the toughest year of his life in the post-hurricane sandy period of trying to bring his state back. i spent several days on the campaign trail with him. he said what he wanted to accomplish tonight was more than winning a second term. that was first but he hopes to get more than 50% of the vote. he said that would send a signal to his republican party around the country that his style of leadership has a way to win in a very blue state like new jersey where president obama won re-election by 17 points just a year ago. so christie has been campaigning hard against washington dysfunction saying that voters really want results. and of course he's got that bigger than life brash style, sometimes in your face. i talked to voters who say they're concerned about whether that would play elsewhere in the country. he says voters simply want to know what people will do and how they will get things done. and that is a message that could resonate beyond new jersey. the

shore literally about one hundred residents were evicted from their community after a private water company started to sign contracts with gas trailers in order to provide water during operations in in the state we've also seen people whose drinking water is being contaminated and hurt which is a tremendous issue for many people in developing countries in low income areas and i think that those sorts of challenges are the reasons that you seem not just the vatican but tremendous numbers of people coming out into the streets to oppose this sort of gas development from going on in their communities you know we've seen very strong opposition to this in romania in france across the united states starting. up in australia and new zealand and other places around the globe with the relation to water contamination is this just a fear because the really big chain evidence that fundamentally shows that it is a danger to people's health and we actually seen that this isn't too much being made of this issue do us e.p.a. is actually identified contaminants in opera for the billion wyoming that w

in october 2012, travis miles was working on the jersey shore. when hurricane sandy barrelled its way up the east coast. >> it was supposed to go out to sea and then it veered back? >> yeah, it was coming up the atlantic coast and made a hard left turn to new jersey. >> reporter: in fact, the storm caught new jersey off guard, causing historic damage to infrastructure and massive lines for gas. miles studied the super storm in rutgeres university and vowing not to be caught off guard again. and he said this is the answer. essentially this is an underwater robt that monitors the ocean temperature? >> yeah, we call them gliders. >> reporter: miles said super storms are difficult to predict because forecasters limited access to ocean temperature. he said the glider will change that. >> ocean temperatures can drive how intense a hurricane s. knowing those temperatures we can forecast the intensity of the hurricane. >> reporter: currently rutgeres have 15 and 4 of which are in the atlantic and antartic ocean. scientist and students monitor every move
